Topic: Wii 2?

I think it will be a long time before we see a Wii 2. It could be 5 to 6 years before Nintendo even announces a Wii 2. This is almost too soon to be talking about this.

First of all, cool name!

Secondly, yes, I'm semi-serious. At last GDC, 3D was apparently a big thing, and it's becoming increasingly popular in cinemas; plus, Miyamoto has said time and again that he wants to do something in 3D. Personally, I have no interest in it at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the next generation's consoles uses it. Who knows, PS3 could start supporting it eventually, as some games were supposedly demoed with it used to good effect.

If we don't go to 3D, where do we go next? I'm not sure that improved graphics can be a selling point anymore. Wii obviously needs better graphics more than any of the consoles (and I use "needs" loosely), but upgrading it just so that it's on par with the other systems would be pretty disappointing. All systems will likely support motion controls next generation, so Wii 2 will need something else in order to have the same kind of success.

The next generation will be pretty darn interesting, methinks, but we're getting ahead of ourselves.

There won't be a "Wii 2" in the sense that is being discussed here.

Thanks, Iwata, didn't know that.

Yeah. BluRay technology. I hope Nintendo takes advantage of the 25/50 GB data capacity and not just enhance the HD graphics.

And Wii Friend codes are used to protect kids online.

No reason to be a jerk Adam. It is just that upgrading the Wii with HD graphics, etc doesn't fit Nintendo's strategy:

https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii/nintendo_domination_th...

The articles linked from that thread explain why there will never be a "Wii 2" or "Wii HD", why Nintendo doesn't "need to satisfy the hardcore," why Wii is not a "fad," as well as a number of other issues that are argued ad nauseum around here. They are excellent articles and I would highly recommend them, but if you'd rather just make rude comments and insult people for no good reason then go right ahead. I don't get why everyone is so flippin' touchy around here lately.

@miletich
Friend codes are great, and I definitely welcome them, but I don't understand the need for individual game codes. The Wii's friend code should be enough. Add the Wii number, and automatically have that person available for any game that uses friend codes. You could still manually remove them from individual games if you for some reason wanted to. I hope they make this change for the next system. It is a real pain to have so many different codes.

@Kknight
Whoa, who's being a jerk? Gentle sarcasm, that's all. No need for the rude name calling. No one here is touchy. Just take a short breather or something.

But about what you're saying, you can believe that nothing in this thread will come true, but it's still just your opinion. You don't have insider information because someone said in another thread that it doesn't fit Nintendo's strategy. Plus, Nintendo's strategy is not static. If it were, they would never have survived this long. I was just commenting on how you phrased it, passing it off as fact when everyone here is just speculating or writing down wish lists.

@Adam
My apologies...I hate the internet sometimes. "Tone of voice" etc don't translate into text form at all and so gentle sarcasm often comes across as more abrasive than it is meant.

Anyway, I'm not claiming to have inside information and the thread that I posted was mine, not someone else's. The articles referenced fully explain Nintendo's strategy...mostly in Iwata's own words. Again, I'd highly recommend them.

Apology accepted, Captain Needa. Yea, I hate the internet for the same reason sometimes. I can totally understand. I should have used a smiley, anyway. That usually conveys the sense of harmlessness I go for, though it does unfortunately look a little kiddier than I care for.

And I understand Nintendo's strategy for this generation (and I have read that thread, just forgot who started it), but I don't think that applies to next generation. They can't pull the same trick twice. I seem to remember Nintendo (Iwata or someone else high up) saying that the next system would be more advanced in the traditional ways. I don't see why it wouldn't be. I expect Nintendo will have something new, too, though, such as 3D glasses (though hopefully something much better).

LOL, yeah I try to attach smilies to my occasional sarcasm as well. I find that pre-empts big dummies like me from missing the fact that it was meant to be lighthearted

I expect that Nintendo will redefine the concept of a "generation." This is their first disruptive console since the NES, with everything since being sustaining advances. It seems that the lessons they've learned would have them wanting to "re-disrupt" the market with each new "generation" and Iwata's comments bear that out. Being the only fully integrated hardware and software company puts them in a unique position to be able to do just that. Bringing out a sustaining advance such as a "Wii 2" or "Wii HD" puts them back in the position of having to compete with companies such as Sony or Microsoft. When Sega was still in the hardware game, they always said that they feared Nintendo far more than Microsoft or Sony because of Nintendo's ability to disrupt the market.

Yea, I definitely think they need to continually practice disruption, but advancing the hardware should be a parallel goal, and I think they believe this. There's perhaps a miscommunication here: While I fully expect the next console to be HD-compatible and with at least a small hard drive or hard drive support, I'm sure they have something much crazier planned, too. I definitely welcome the oft-hinted at longer life cycle for the current generation systems though, as much as I look forward to what Nintendo could possibly have in store for us with the Wii's theoretical successor.

I think that with each game you purchase for the Wii 2, you will not only recieve the software, but the costume of the main character as well. For instance, let's say you buy the latest Zelda game. You'd recieve the game along with tights and a tunic (sword and shield sold seperatley). That way you will not only be playing the game, but you will be LIVING IT!

Oh, and one last thing. They will come "one size fits, well.......most of you"?

Fair enough Being a Nintendo fan since the Game & Watch and NES days, I always look forward to what Nintendo has up their sleeves next

@greyelephant: Oh, great, so they're either going to assume we're all porkers or all children, or all one gender or the other... Funny idea, and I kind of like it, but it's not really plausible...

OK here's what I want to see in the next generation, besides the obvious stuff (HiDef, Hard Drive etc.)
1. Multiple Video outputs. reason: option to play multiplayer games without split screens. in other words, being able to hook up to 2 TVs.
2. Multiple Audio outputs. reason: option to connect separate (wireless) headphones/headsets for each player. yes i'm serious.
3. NO MORE SHOVELWARE! Remember when the Nintendo Seal meant something?
4.Optional Digital 3D. No not the blue/red cheezy 3D, I mean the really cool digital 3D that's been experimented with in a few theatres.
I look forward to opinions on my ideas.

It's a me, Luigi!

Upgrade to the Mii. The Mii's look dull when you look at them in the mii channel. But in games they have nice clothes. We should be able to add clothe's to the Mii's to make them nicer. And they need arms and legs.
