I think it will be HD and nomore wii friend codes hopefully, or at least just one. I don't expect much change, kinda like the dsi.

I dunno. It'll have to be something REALLY amazing if Nintendo hopes to entice the new expanded gaming market to upgrade hardware, though. I would expect some level of HD as the tech gets cheap and common enough that lack of HD becomes an even bigger hindrance than it already is.

As current popular rumors run, the next Nintendo system may be a limited HD upgrade of the Wii, without all that many actual new features. One might expect controllers with built-in Wii Motion Plus (assuming the peripheral does well at release) and HOPEFULLY a better memory setup than the Wii has. If it used a standard 2.5" hard drive like the PS3, Nintendo could put in a really small one dirt cheap and we could upgrade it to 500 gigs for under $150 (not that we'd NEED that much, but...)! Of course, it would need a vastly improved menu system to be able to handle all that space with all those games in it.

It then needs to be compatible will all Wii downloadable games, with a system in place to move download licenses from our Wii's to the new console (probably using Club Nintendo accounts). It would probably also be possible to make it compatible with Gamecube games cheaply, but I'm not sure if they'd bother or not (I hope so, but no guarantees...).

@Stuffgamer1 - Why do we "need" 500 Gb in a HDD? And adding 150$ do a Wii would bump the price to a 360. Have you looked at the size of the files? They are very small. That and they pack the games on a disc that can hold at most 8 Gb...Besides, by the time they would possibly make on, you will be able to get a solid state drive at 256 Gb for maybe 35 - 50$...

@Adam - What about a new power glove? Think about KLAX on Wii! (Joking)

@Danny August: I think you misunderstood what I said. I said that we COULD add that huge a hard drive, not that we'd need it. Though if they did make a system with a hard drive, they could also up the size limit for WiiWare games (which, if it was an HD system, they'd pretty much HAVE to do anyway).

i dont want to have to keep on upgradeing my systimes like i did with the N64 then i bought the gamecube then the wii and then the ds-lite now the DSi. i want to save money by just getting firmware updates like we do on the wii
firmware by the way is the anser to never haveing to upgrade to a new systime ever again becuse internet brought firmware to the 21st centuary

the Wii hardware, though, is going to fall behind as the firmware gradually evolves and adapts to handle better graphics, music quality, more realistic movements/textures, sprites, and other gradual improvements made via video games. updateable firmware is a great feature of the system and has the potential to extend its lifespan, but firmware is not hardware, and once the hardware gets pushed to its limit, we will have to upgrade again.

Although firmware can do a lot for most systems, the Wii's IOS system limits what can be upgraded.
Running games from the SD card means what's being run gets moved to the hard drive and THEN run. The Wii is incapable of running them straight off the SD card. This is but one example of many.
In a couple of years we'll likely see an HD upgrade to the Wii, with a better hard drive, faster processors, etc, and most probably a hardware/firmware combination that is easier to upgrade. All this, and still remaining backwards compatible with Gamecube games and using SD cards for transfer of files. I agree the the default controller will be the Wiimote with MotionPlus capabilities. I'd like to see a region free system too, but knowing Nintendo, they'll keep region locking the systems until it loses them the market. This will come a couple of years before the next gaming generation starts.

the thing is, what i heard from serious sources is that all firmware dowlnloaded clog up the memory. I guess we will be seeing some new nintendo hardware on e309

the future is donning (?) those motion capture suits and look like tingle smurfs!

Considering they just ADDED region locking to DSi when regular DS games don't have it, there's no WAY Nintendo will make a system that isn't region coded! Not unless they can get their heads out of their butts and set up their system more like PS3. PS3 games aren't region coded. Not retail, and not downloads. But for downloads, you can only access the PSN store of the region your profile is set to! So people tend to abuse the fact that PSN profiles are free and make one for each region so they can download what they like (since a downloaded game can be played using any profile on the first system of download). This prevents people from accidentally downloading games they can't understand (Nintendo's official reason for region-locking DSiWare) without needing region locks!

But we all know Nintendo isn't smart enough to actually implement this sensible feature. sigh

wii is only 3 years old why are we talking about this now?

EDIT: i know over time firmware updates will take up to much room but we got SD cards so dont worry about it

@Cheezy, well they managed to get DVD playback through the homebrew channel so there is a possability of firmware or possible a new wii channel to download from the shop.

Sod Wii2! I've got enough games to complete, and a list as long as my arm of upcoming Wii games im defo gonna play.

All I want from Wii 2 is Mario and Zelda goodness with graphics comparable to the current gens hi-def systems (which suck).

Rawr!

Raptor78

I agree with Machu that I also have dozens of games to complete and many more upcoming games I want.
But rather than Nintendo bringing out a new system I would probably be happy with them just bringing out an improved version of the wii just like they did with the DS.
They could do with increasing the flash drive and having a built in HD scaler (and possibly HDMI output) to improve the quality of pictures on HD TV's. Bundled with motionplus controlers (with the add combined with remote instead of an accessory)
This would give those people who love the wii a reason to upgrade and those who didnt get one in the first place because of these short commings. As for everyone else, they dont feel like they are being shafted because they only just bought a wii and dont need / want to upgrade. I stuck with the DS Phat for years after the lite came out and didnt care that Nintendo replaced it with the lite as they both played the same games without any real difference. Hopefully they continue this trend on the wii.

The first thing to mention is, that this is not something, we will get in the next two years. The lifespan of the Wii is very high and right at the moment there is no need for Nintendo to bring out another system. There are a lot of sales to be made with the Wii and a new console would just hinder this.

However, there are a lot of things I would expect from a "Wii 2":

  • better technology, up-to-date graphics, HD
  • integrated Wii MotionPlus technology in BOTH the Wiimote and the Nunchuk
  • rumble feature for Nunchuk and Classic Controller
  • (integrated Wiispeak + camera in the sensor bar)
  • a hard drive large enough for downloadable content and larger downloadable games
  • but SD cards should be still supported
  • more multi media applications, at least a DVD player would be nice
  • online play accounts, no annoying friend code system
  • no gamecube ports or memory card slots (more space for other hardware)
  • gamecube games still playable though (well, but it's not really necessary, I think they will get rid of the NGC technology completely)
  • backward compatibility for all Wii games
  • and something, that would make the whole system somehow special. I don't know, what it could be, but they need something unique, what hasn't been done before

Well, they've added an "i" and a camera to the good old DS and got a new system. So, I suppose we'll get like a Wii with a built-in camera and a mic. And it will be called Wiii. =)

But yea, your list sounds good and believable. The only thing I'm not sure about is having GC compatibility without the controllers. I'd love for it to happen, but I don't think it will. I also wonder why Classic Controller doesn't work on GC games already. I wish it did.
