@JayArr: I'll admit, I'm attached to the sword and am reluctant to let go. I'll try some new stuff, see what I think.

@HolyMackerel: Roger that dude! I'll start stocking up when the ships in.

Switch axe rocks.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, would you kindly?

@Machu Also don't be embarrassed about using sword and shield! The later ones you can get are quite respectable. I just forged an Azi Dahka (or however you spell it - the Gobul one) and it's a force to be reckoned with, especially since it can inflict paralysis.

Just because the attack number is small doesn't mean the damage output is small. You can get in a combo of 8 hits and then dodge out by the time a lancer gets near the opponent. The SnS shines in speed, maneuverability and versatility. Then add statuses and shazam!

EDIT: Also I should just clarify that combining ammo is really worth it, but buying the cheap stuff like Normal S Lv2 and Pierce S Lv1 is a better use of your time than combining 99 of them. You'd be wasting husks you could use for better ammo.

I'm still using the S & S though I am not that far into the game.Just completed 1* quests. i've tried using the bloody big sword but it just seems to cumbersome to me,especially underwater. I look forward to experimenting with all the different weapons in the future though and I like the fact that you aren't stuck with one weapon type. This game ROCKS!!!

What's this bit for again?

sandpiper

I'm using the sword. I'm working on getting resources to upgrade it.

JayArr

Yeah Machu, I was just joshing ya about a real weapon. I would rather run with SnS user that knows what their doing tha GreatSword user that wiffs or up-swings the crap out me.

The most important thing is to be comfortable and effective with your weapon. Doesn't matter what type it is.

@JayArr * grumble grumble * Damn upswingers! It takes like 10 seconds to return to combat once you're hit by them!

Although I imagine team upswinging could be useful to get party members out of the line of fire. If you're near a gunner and he's in danger you could get him to relative safety by knocking him away.

For me its been the great sword. Have also used the bowgun but only in the arena. I need a upgrade bad though. Some of the tougher bosses my weapon just bounces right off. Does that still damage them if it does that?

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.

@Tech101 If your weapon is deflected that means you hit a heavily armoured part of their body and it did no damage. You have to aim your attacks at their softer spots. I believe there's a skill or certain weapons which can get through armour though. Pierce shots do extra damage if you hit armoured areas for example.

I'm a big fan of the bowgun.

There seems to be very few of us gunners online too. I like to think we add something different to a party.
Certainly came into it's own one of the quests that involve taking down huge groups.

I think every team of 4 hunters should have a gunner. Every time I play online and there is a bowgunner, we do pretty well on the quest. I have the materials to a peco bowgun. Is it worth it?

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, would you kindly?

HolyMackerel

@Chucko The Tropeco bowgun is awesome. I made the full set and now I've made some modifications to better suit my play style. The specialty of the Tropeco gun is Flaming S (it has a clip of 5 shots!) and Recov S Lv1 (which it rapid fires! Uber healing!). You should start getting comfortable with the bowgun data screens: you'll be staring at them a long time if you decide to go the gunner route.

But we shouldn't all be gunners! I think a team of 4 gunners wouldn't actually be very good. Not enough damage output and too much reloading and maneuvering. You need a front line, and a gunner or two act as support with covering fire, extra damage and supportive techniques.

Also gunners should always carry a Healing Horn to blow if your teammates are low on health, and Recov S for tight situations. Power S and Armor S look useful too but they're expensive to combine so I haven't tried them yet.

@HolyMackerel: Don't worry dude I knew what you meant. Buy the cheap stuff and keep husks for combining experimental goodness. I really enjoy just making stuff. I like how all you have to is discover a combination, then it's ingredients are logged and you can repeat it anytime. I've never seen a system like this, it's amazing.

@JayArr: I'm currently wandering around in full Alloy Armor with a Rugged Great Sword. I look sexy awesome! Still though, nothing feels quite like the Sword, it's definitely what I'm better at. I prefer the speed and the fact you can use items whilst armed, v.nice. The bigger weapons do a lot more damage but my hit ratio drops as I swing wildly and miss far too often. Saying that, I'm off to meet Royal Ludroth on the final 3* Quest soon, I'll be taking my great sword for that mofo. THWAK!

@Chucko: Agreed, having a single gunner in a group adds real balance. Plus, it's very re-assuring seeing bullets fly in.

/back to the hunt!

Well, I did some "research" (aka, watched videos of gameplay and looked at the monster hunter wiki), and I plan on using some sort of switch axe or hammer. Can you have 2 weapons at once?

Just let it happen.

@110percentful

Unfortunately no. Though the switch axe is basically a great sword and axe in one.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, would you kindly?

HolyMackerel

@110percentful You can have "two weapons at once" by just owning them. Whenever you go to your item box or the armorer you can swap your weapons, and you can keep as many as you like. There are really only two classes in the game: Blademasters, who use every melee weapon, and Gunners, who use bowguns. And you can switch between them just by changing your equipment.

@Machu ZOMG sword and shield would be uber useful against Gigginox. Gunners fail miserably against him. Reason? You fight in the dark, omg. _ SnS users can hold a torch while fighting which not only allows you (and the gunners on your team) to see him, but it also scares away all those damn Giggis. Also I'm strutting my stuff in the full Barroth armour set which is just badass. Though I have a Tropeco gun with all its colourful feathers so, uh, it does look strange.

BTW, how hard is it to get resources from creatures? I ask this because I want a lagiacrus switch axe or hammer, but it looks like you have to get a lot of things to make it.

Just let it happen.

James

Depends on the creature, really! Obviously the harder the enemy, the harder it'll be to get resources from them, so something like a Lagiacrus set could take a while unless you're extremely patient and proficient. Best of luck, though!

HolyMackerel

Well I've only fought Lagiacrus three times and I have enough materials from it to pretty much make the entire Thundacrus bowgun set. In fact all I needed were Pelagicite Ores.

@110percentful Stop reading up details about the game, you'll spoil the experience. Part of the fun is in discovering enemies, combinations and weapons! STOP READING ABOUT MH3 NOW.
