Nintendo's had a good run at the $249 price point. The demand had so outstripped the supply that they could have raised the price and still sold as many units.
However, all good things come to an end. And the end is that demand at $249 has fallen as that market has saturated. In addition, tight economic times have had consumers watching their pocket books more closely. Worse yet, Nintendo's competitors have been edging toward Nintendo's pricing. So the time is right for Nintendo to drop the price to $199 and pick up a portion of the market who previously couldn't justify the cost.
The $199 price drop will probably be followed up a year and a half later with a drop to $149. After that, Nintendo will await the next generation of console. Once the next gen is released, Nintendo will sell the Wii for $99.
For those of you who think none of this will affect you, think again. Here's the Pavlov trigger:
Nintendo has denided a price cut, I don't think we'll be seeing one anytime soon. However, it would be sweet if we did see one. Sure we won't be affected, but younger childern will be looking to get the Wii once again, and help guarantee that they will win the console war.
Oh and I read some of Kotaku's comment and some of them are despising what Nintendo is doing. Well I've seen far worse thing that a company done to themself then what Nintendo is doing right now (Does this reminds you of Sega and Cartoon Network anyone?). At least Nintendo made a good fiancial decision.
@thewiirocks: While you might be right on that, I could care less about having a color Wii.
(If you have any negitive responses to this comment, please keep it to yourself.)
I don't know. This sounds like one of those "I wish it would happen so I'm going to say it" rumors. Kinda like that IGN article about how Nintendo was going to become "more hardcore" or something like that

Classic Controller Pro? Black Wii remote? yes
different coloured Wii? Cheaper Wii? I couldn't care less (although if it was $150 and black I would consider buying a second one for when I want to play something and the main TV is being used/my Dad is playing Wii Sports Resort)
I would buy a second Wii if there was... 1: a pricedrop 2: the ability to move WiiWare and VC between Wiis
Yeah you are really going to be able to move VC/WW games around.
Maybe not.
Ben Cartwright: You and your education. Adam Cartwright: Education is progress! Now what have you got against it? Ben Cartwright: I don't have anything against education - as long as it doesn't interfere with your thinking!

Moving VC and WiiWare games around is simple. Just transfer them to your SD Card and put it on another Wii system. Simple as that. All you need to do is buy a second Wii and in your case, a price cut.

You are an epic fail-bot you really are. Why don't you try taking one of your Wii-Ware games and loading it on someone else's Wii. Go on, try it.
