I've never had a more hopeless and "dark" sense in a Zelda game then when stepping out of the Temple of Time in Ocarina of Time for the first time as an adult.
I have, it's called every freaking hour in Majora's Mask.

I find Majora's Mask to be fugged up, not dark (Except for the Happy Mask Salesman). Although the artistic style is definitely the strongest in the series, so it really does bring that fugged up feel of the game to another level. Also
Am I the only one in the world who absolutely loves Twilight Princess? I would even dare to say it is my favorite of the series. Ocarina was for the longest time but Twilight makes it seem very small and confined. I like a Zelda game to be long and full of things to do. Ocarina can be finished in less than 10 hours. Twilight did not dissapoint in this area. Plus I really like the darker theme and more serious tone. I may be alone in my love for Twilight but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
I've never had a more hopeless and "dark" sense in a Zelda game then when stepping out of the Temple of Time in Ocarina of Time for the first time as an adult. While I appreciate the effort Nintendo made to make a more Mature Zelda game, Nothing yet has topped stepping back into the world you saved, to see that the villain has actually won. It's not "Oh, the bad guy is really close to taking over the world, you must intervene" and you never see the "What if he won?" side of things like in just about every game ever. Ganondorf won, he got the Triforce, he corrupted Hyrule, and has maintained dominance for 7 long years, meaning he's on top of everything, and he's ready. Your first instinct is to see Hyrule Castle, only to find out it's now Ganondorfs floating fortress. He's untouchable. So Hyrule Castle is destroyed, Ganondorf's unreachable in his fortress, Death Mountain is beyond fubar, and the whole land is corrupted. All because you gave him the Triforce on a silver platter, which technically means you caused all this damage to the land you're trying to save. Talk about helpless, and dark.
He only got one piece of the Triforce. That was enough to throw everything into chaos and make him immortal, but the other two pieces would have made him into a god. I thought it was a pretty cool twist, but it kind of ruined the feeling when I left the destroyed Castle Town and found the rest of the world mostly unchanged, aside from Zora's Domain. The game wouldn't have fit into the timeline if he hadn't gotten the Triforce of power, though.
@KingMike: Do you mean the one that plays when you enter the boss room in Snowpeak Ruins? It didn't even startle my eight year old cousin. Maybe a few years earlier it would have.
No, the one when I believe he first finds out about the shadow armor, after reaching the third Light Spirit's fountain. First it shows Link and Ilia, then from out of nowhere she's got a knife. Suddenly Link's eyeballs have no pupils, and the Dark Link triplets appear and just disintegrate real Link. Then Link just has this doped-up grin while imagining its raining falling Ilias. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sMOTRNAdLs

this is what I meant a while ago. It's cool that such a relatively family friendly series (all things considered) has such a messed up and interesting scene (but it's rated T anyway as kids can't handle darker themes! roll eyes smilies), but it was clearly made for the sake of being a dark, messed up scene.

Oh, that? I thought it was just an acid trip.
Seriously, that's the kind of thing I would expect from really, really old horror movies. It never occurred to me that it was meant to be creepy.

Seriously, does anyone have any idea what that scene meant? especially the last part with the upside down Ilias?

I dunno, ask some Evangelion fans, they know all about this kind of crap. :V
