I'm just trying to wrap my head around this sales chart:

Not only are they comparing sales of games based on total volume, they're also lumping in single-console games with multi-console games? For example, Mafia II is on the 360, PC, and PS3 so it appeals to 3x more (roughly) the audience than Metroid: Other M, right? Toy Story 3 and PoP are on 5 consoles...

agree. from the chart, the sales look amazing, factoring this.

So ends a saga older than time itself.
The World's oldest and fiercest army has been led to victory, and a lost generation
is delivered from its fear of extinction. As the sun sets over the
field of conflict the dinosaurs disperse, hoping never to set foot

The way it was marketed in America was pretty heavily skewed as "Find out about Samus's past. Oh, these boss fights are pretty cool too." If Metroid never really got a foothold in the UK then a big draw of the game doesn't really grab gamers. If gamers don't know Samus, they don't care about her past. How well did Corruption do in the UK? That'd give you an idea of how popular Metroid has been in general.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

totally agree with Waltzelf.

The sad fact in on 360 there are far many more choices for SCI Fi adventures and adventure games on the whole.

Also the last serious release on WII before this was Mario Galaxy 2 and further back it was New Super Mario bros, which have both been out for a while and that shows that the WII does not have many games coming out.

Is there a reason that 90's gamer is able to have a avatar from what was essentially a pornographic game?

It doesnt' offend me per se, but I was under the impression that this place aims to be family friendly?

apparently you've been playing more pornographic games than the rest of us, Waltz. If you like, feel free to contact the admins about it; they're the only ones who can do anything regarding user avatars or profile/sig information.

The quality of an ad has no bearing on how well a game will sell. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know how marketing works.

No, the problem with Metroid: Other M is this - it's a very serious, very niche title on a casual console. It's not high profile enough to actually sell Wiis, or encourage people back to a console they've left for the PS3 or Xbox 360 (both of which have better examples of sci fi blockbusters), and it's never going to attract newcomers to the Metroid franchise.

It's a good game, sure, for Metroid veterans who haven't moved on. That's a pretty small demographic, if you're going to be honest here.

I actually reckon the game's performing amazingly well, given those constraints.

None of which explains why the game sold very well in other territories, though. You're speaking in universals, while the sales slump is local.

With the UK as the outlier, I don't think it's irrational to turn toward a difference in marketing. Whether or not that's the answer, it's a valid consideration. Especially since the alternatives you've postulated would all be universal, rather than UK-specific.

Not really. I mean, there are any number of cultural differences between regions - games that sell really, really, really well in the US, Japan and Europe sell horribly in Australia.

Pointing the finger at marketing suggests that people still believe that marketing's job is to directly influence someone to buy something. It just doesn't happen like that. Ask any marketer and they'll tell you that conventional theory is that marketing is simply there to raise awareness, and build a culture around a product. An ad, no matter how terrible, is not going to cost sales.

More likely, if the poor sales are indeed Nintendo's fault, it's an issue with logistics. If there's not enough copies going out, sales are going to be low.

But I think it's probably more a cultural thing, or a response to the current economic climate in England, which I believe is pretty darned weak.
