Sure, it's a slightly-accurate rating of your skill, but I think that Mario Kart Wii's online is based ALOT on luck. Luck that you get a golden mushroom instead of a mushroom, luck that there is a hacker or not, luck that some random idiot in 12th place doesn't screw you over on the third lap with a blue turtle shell next to the finish line. It's too much. You almost have to maintain 2nd place to make two of the things I listed above not matter. I mean, I'm good at Mario Kart. But how am I supposed to control some of the things that happen? Are we supposed to dodge everything? The system for gaining/losing VR/BR is cruel in my opinion, as any good race/battle can go horribly wrong at any second.
Right now, my VR stands at 8500-some. My BR 7500-some. Both used to be in the 9000s, but nowadays everytime I turn on MKW something goes horribly wrong and I end up losing 200 for one lousy match and gaining 30 for a match I PWNed in.
So I decided. I just DON'T CARE anymore. Now, the only thing I care about for an accurate showing of skill is the stars next to your name, which I have 3 of. Because I beat people with 9999 VR, and sometimes I lose to people with 6000. Sometimes I do lose to people with more VR/BR, and most of the time I beat the lower rating players. I just don't think it's an accurate rating system. So I don't care.

My VR is 9600 something but I do get what your saying when in short words “anything can happen”.
I`ve got many stories to share but I won`t bore you lol.

Just for you.

Yeah, I remember when my VR was that high. I've been trying to get it back up.

And as you can probably tell by this topic, it's NOT going well. lol.

I'll say now, that I got used to being disconnected either when I tried hitting someone with a shell, or moving ahead and dropping bananas, and at times even what I was thinking and mood...
...Well, at times it was pretty frustrating to know that I lost some, but at the same time, sometimes I let people win, or I'd purposely go to a lower position at certain times then forge ahead quite well...
...so, really, I did care about it at first, but after playing and losing points (I think I've lost more points in disconnections than anything else, or else I'd be up there in 7 or 8 thou, so... )
and understanding that to me it didn't matter anyways really, when it was and still is pretty fun to play with other MKW players.

I could have destroyed a controller at one point, however, I wanted to play further and later on, so, I choose to not play for awhile instead.

Actually what you (thread starter) stated IS why it's an awesome, fun, unexpected experience, and I don't think I'd want it to change. Hey, at least there's no crazy 'snake drifting' and shit... and that would be I stopped even participating in Wi-Fi MKDS.

So, yeah, does anyone even care about VR/BR in Mario Kart Wii anymore?

I agree. That's also the reason that I'm not really into online MK. It's fun and all, but it's more based on luck then skill. But my little sis like online. When we play together, she wants to go online and I'll be here guest. What I do like though is playing with my little sis offline without items. Then it's really a battle of skill and one simple mistake could be the end.

The thing about MKDS...even if people use items like blue shells on you, snaking allows you to catch up quicker, whereas in MK Wii, you might not have a chance anymore

I really hate blue shells. I'm in first alot, and even when I let someone pass me because I think one might come soon, it never comes until 5 seconds after I pass into first place.

Just today I was playing a guy and he was in first the whole race pretty much after using a Gold Mushroom, and I was waiting for a blue shell because one always comes for me. It never came. He passed the finish line. Almost IMMEDIATELY afterwards, a blue shell comes and hits me. They would be better if you got them in higher places. Don't really see the point of them when you're in 12th.

I've never got one in 12th , funny
more like 5th, or around there,

I've encountered getting one even in 2nd or 3rd,
lucky me, I just try and keep a positive outlook and feeling,
because lol that may even effect your playing... Nintendo!

I've been hit with blue-sheel in first and have still won a few times.
and I've some how dodged, or got away from it ONCE@ (believe1 lol)
also its kind of what makes playing more complicated or makes you do different strategy
which i guess you guys don't want to change your driving ways lol

Okay, I'd like to know your opionion or experience on MK64 blue-shell, so what do you think of that Mario Kart 64 blue shell,
that hits people along the way?

Eh. MK is a game of chance and skill, not unlike Poker. I say it is more about consisitency - in driving, in course knowledge, in item management - than pure 'luck'.

I only race once in a while, but I love the VR, I was once at 8500 but ussualy hover around 8000, where I am now. Aside from cheaters, I find it to be very accurate.

IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?

Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant.

I certainly care... I especially care that I'm lower than where I really should be and as a result, it's not completely accurate for me.

Rank and points for online gaming really causes for cheaters and aholes to come out of the woodwork. Gaining levels and stuff for participating (like in Conduit) is interesting, but when you are ranked with points and whatnot, people do cutthroat things to win, hurting the overall experience.

So, no, I don't care for my VR/BR, and considering there isn't any prize in store, nobody should.

I actually thought those were more fair. They have the chance to hit everyone, not just first place. So it wouldn't be as much of a problem because it could affect everyone. The fact that blue shells can just destroy one person stinks in my opinion. I dodge blue shells as well and still win first sometimes after being hit by one, I just don't like the fact that one item could ruin a perfectly good match, and just because you get hit by one near the end, you lose a ton of VR like you've been in last the whole race.

Aviator

I liked the concept in 64. Sometime it would target the player in 1st, but others, it would target all players. However, what I like to do in Wii is to slow down when im about to get hit so other players get hit with me.

But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
