There was actually something in the background of level 2 that reminded me of Kubi. I felt deeply ashamed immediately.
I'm on 3-11 now. I can almost do those tunnels of triplets with my eyes closed now. I cannot get over how much I love the music in this world. The music and color scheme remind me of Void. It boggles the mind how they can make such a frustrating game but with the right music and color make it feel like some meditative experience. It probably took half an hour to beat the first boss, and I was saying such terribly rude things to my TV the whole time, but I spend over an hour on 3-11 smiling the whole time with this feeling like the world is full of sunshine and flowers and happy people waiting outside to hug me.
Pix, if you'd played the other Bit Trip games, you'd have expected World 2 by now. World 2 is actually fairly easy, nothing remotely as hard as the end levels of World 1. It's the background that's hard, but I love it.
Ohhhh, I almost forgot, did you do any pixel art for the graffiti in this game, Pix??? Or did anyone else? I love the graffiti, especially the giant duck and the one that says "I am only a cat." I laugh at the cat one every time.
Crap, I was THIS close to getting a perfect run on 3-3! I got the first 38 gold coins in the bonus stage (out of 43), but I tripped up at a fireplace near the end
The difficulty of the bonus stages seems very uneven, sometimes they'll be simple to run through without dying and only have a handful of gold coins that can't be collected without taking any risks, and other times they'll have tons of gold coins that require you to perform several tricky jumps in a row with perfect timing to collect them and a bunch of obstacles that are hard to avoid even if you're not trying to get the gold coins. Did anyone else notice this?
Has anyone managed to collect all the gold coins in level 3-1? There are a few parts where you have to jump onto a trampoline immediately after sliding under a bar to reach a gold coin, and there doesn't seem to be any margin for error AT ALL. Like, you have to stop sliding and then jump at EXACTLY the right frame if you want to land on the trampoline. I can't recall ever playing a rhythm game where the timing was that unforgiving. You don't need all the gold coins to advance, but I'm kind of a completionist so not being able to get all of the coins on one of the levels really irks me.
I've got all the gold coins in the main 3-1 but not the bonus stage. It's a fairly easy bonus stage, but as you say those slide->jumps require such precise timing that it's tough to access the bonus a lot.
My first impressions are... it's ok. I'm only 3/4 of the way through Zone 1 though, so my opinion right now means 5h1t. When I return home later this evening I shall be drunk, and we shall see how good this really is.
Beat it! The last few stages made me wanna cry The final boss was kind of a letdown, I'd elaborate but I don't want to risk spoiling it for anybody. Overall I'd give it a 9/10, the difficulty was a little uneven at times but other than that it was a completely awesome and mind-blowing experience!
Finally beat it. Yea, I kind of agree about the last level, but it was also one of the most fun levels anyway, if not as bossy as I'd have liked. Of course, the other two bosses weren't really that interesting either in comparison with the series' past bosses, all of which were awesome.
Then again, bosses weren't part of the original plan for the series, either, and this formula was probably difficult to work them in since it was less abstract, so I'm not that disappointed. It's easily the best Bit Trip game, best WiiWare game, and one of the best games I've ever played regardless.
I'm not sure what to make of the ending. Void's ending made it pretty clear a platformer was coming, I thought. This one though I'm not sure. I think they said Meat Boy would be in the next one, so I'm thinking it'll still be a side-scroller. A run and gun still seems to be a possibility, thankfully.
Credits music was awesome, though a bit out of place in the series given the use of some live instruments.
Well, I got home and started again from scratch. For the first nine levels this was my face... then, at the aptly named 'End of the Beginning', a little smile began to emerge. It's a shame the game doesn't start till 1-10, but yeah, it's pretty cool. The music absolutely rocks, of course.
I'm not sure what to say about NL's review score. It's Tomena Sanner with a retro look. And Beat was much better. Hhmm.
Anyway, time to pour a large drink and head to Zone 2.
Wait to say what game is better once you are in world 2. World 1 is good, but the real fun begins in world 2, and world 3 is amazing, only Core's final level has as good music and color.
If you ignore the Pitfall levels (which I rarely get to outside of world 1), you're looking at probably the same length of time for a perfect completion, but you replay the levels so often that it feels like a much bigger game.
I didn't even know the review was up until you pointed it out, but I'm glad even the Anti-Platformer himself can find the beauty in this game, haha.
Downloaded it a bit ago and so far it is easily the best in the series with Beat in a close second. I too am having trouble on 1-11 (that last part with the flying saucers keeps getting me). I blew through (1-1) - (1-10), so after spending maybe 20 minutes trying to be 1-11, I decided I needed a break, haha. Maybe I will get back to it tonight, but yeah, really don't regret this purchase, 800 points well spent!

While I certainly liked the other Bit.Trip games (well Beat and Void, never played Core....), I never LOVED the other ones. But now? I LOVE Runner. It's probably my favorite WiiWare game. I'm only at the end of 1-11, but I never actually felt frustrated at any level other than 1-11, and even then, I didn't start getting frustrated until I died about 80 times. Something about the game is making it so that I don't get frustrated as easily, even after dying continuously. Can't wait to see the rest!
