Topic: Wii U UI / OS wish list

I got my nintendo wii u a few weeks ago and i am LOVING it. However like most human beings, we always want more . For me a few simply things that can be added /changed would go a long way. Which brings us to the main point of this post, What would you like see Changed/Added/Removed from the UI or OS ?

These are my big ones-

1- Ability to take screenshots without miiverse and store them (im looking at your monster hunter)
2- Ability to change what communities show up when at main screen.
3- Turn off Wii U gamepad screen while still being able to play (for games like mario it can be distracting as its a double screen)
4- Youtube App keeps enforcing screen burn reduction for long videos or play lists.

I support every one of those! Especially the Wii U gamepad suggestion. Tapping the power button should turn off the screen + controller, while holding it should turn off the console. I hate that it's always on even when I use the pro controller or something. I also wish you could p[lay games with JUST the wii remote, pro controller, or other controllers without the gamepad turning on when the console turns on..mostly for virtual console games.

I also wish there was an mp3 playback function during games. It's not really big of a deal, but for games like LittleBigPlanet on PS3, I was always listening to my own music

I also think it would be cool to have video playback on the Wii U as well. I know with some PS3 games like Skate 3, you could render in game videos and save them to your HDD and watch them later. Although I'm not a PS3 fanboy, I have to admit that the amount of media options it had was very nice, and I wish some of those could be on Wii U!

Go to the home menu, then to controller settings, and there's an option to turn the screen off.

I know, but it's a bit annoying to do that every time, plus the controller is still on, so the battery is still draining

@PloXyZeRO - I would like more media function too. The fact that I can play all my digital movies on my HDD on my 360 and the Wii U can't is dissapointing. Plus in the UK atleast they need to get the on-demand tv channels on there (BBC Iplayer, ITV player, 4 OnDemand and Demand5). I know the Wii U is a games console first and foremost but atleast have the same features as the PS3 and 360 on that respect!

When we look at what features should be added, we also have to look what Nintendo and other companies have already done. Music, video, pictures, etc. other things have already been done in past consoles, which leads me to believe Nintendo is figuring out how to best integrate those 'standard' features inti their console. Wii U will probably play music and show pictures eventually.

There definitely could be a better pic integration for Miiverse. Mario TV shows the Wii U can make good use of sharing records and such. Even the Xbox 360 could show a match replay and upload it online, so this is pretty standard now.

As for the GamePad. I guess those could be options, but it doesn't really matter to me.

The community idea is good.

There's still alot Nintendo can improve on, no doubt.

Yeah, this. It's ridiculous that the Gamepad is turned on even when nobody's using it, just sucking up power.

And having the Wii U OS require the Gamepad for most functions is such a clusterfuck of bad design. Why can't I browse the internet with just a Wiimote? Why doesn't the eShop work with a Wiimote? Why can't I even change the freaking SETTINGS without the Gamepad? This needs to be fixed ASAP, I hate how poorly thought out the forced Gamepad use is.

Personally I don't have a problem with any of the things anyone has brought up in this thread. All I'm either happy with or I think are non-issues. If they were going to improve something I would hoped they'd add folders and just generally improve performance.

Walk the gamepad out of the range of the Wii U, press and hold power button on the gamepad.. the whole gamepad powers down, while the Wii U remains on.

I think the Wii U needs:

1) folders, because my menu is already getting cluttered

2) Wii remote navigation, especially in apps like Netflix; to elaborate, you should be able to turn on the system, and not the Gamepad, by turning it on with just the Wii remote. I love the Gamepad, but I don't want such a big remote sitting next to me when I watch Netflix, especially if the battery's going to drain the whole time.

3) the ability to watch/play things on the TV while getting the audio through headphones connected to the Gamepad; I have an HDTV, but no sound system. My headphones, while not great, are far better than my TV's built in audio. I think some games/apps may do this already (unfortunately Netflix does not), but I don't think they turn off the TV's volume when they do.

4) Mic chat through the Gamepad's mic. I have a headset, but only because this wasn't available.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, because I think I came up with a lot of possible improvements before, but these are good enough.

Three things for me~

1. the removal of Region Lock, which in theory could be done via an update~ hint hint, dat summer update
2. A server based account system so our NNID's are tied to physical accounts on Nintendo's servers, rather than on the system itself~ (also applies to the 3DS)
3. the removal of the 100 friends limit, it doesn't really bother me but i'm sure it might some of you~

I want my Gamepad's AC adapter to extend and plug itself in to the Gamepad whenever the battery is running low. That is all.

I'm pretty okay.

Yeah, this. You shouldn't have to "walk out of range" or fiddle with the menus to turn the Gamepad off while keeping the console on, that's ridiculous. Turning the system on with a Wiimote should be an easy indication for that.

Cool, thanks for the tip! That's not too much of a hassle so it'll do for now

#2 is a big one i didnt think of, i would much prefer what games and such i own be server side.

@Warruz
It technically already is server side. NNIDs on Wii U keep records of your purchases. Their system just isn't setup to make managing the accounts possible outside of one system, mainly due to no final OS being in place, and there hasn't really been any content prior that could take advantage of such features.
Even still, if Nintendo allows game sharing, I willing to bet it will require local authorization with internet simultaneously like the Wii to Wii U tansfer.
