Topic: What I want Nintendo to announce at E3.

you know... i love nintendo and there are many things i would like them to announce at E3... a new Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero etc. would be amazing... new Mega Man game after acquiring Capcom? awesome
but let's be honest... none of that will happen

so i settle for less.... i want them to confirm these characters for Super Smash Bros.:
Captain Falcon
Yoshi (without Baby Mario...please!)
Diddy Kong (maybe Dixie Kong as well?)
Sheik
Ganondorf
Wario
Ness
Ice Climbers
Pokemon-Trainer
Palutena
Mewtwo
Mew
Tetra
Falco
Meta Knight
Mr. Game & Watch

  • other Pokemon

and then i want them to finally announce that they're going to completely overhaul all their online services.... i want good servers for Smash Bros., i want a teamspeak-like program to talk with friends, i want them to support the competitive Smash Bros. scene and add ladders/rankings (take starcraft 2 for example) in Smash Bros. and all that kind of stuff, proper ingame (smash bros.) and OS-wide friendlists..

in Smash Bros. i want to play with/against people on my level... i don't want to play vs casuals/noobs 80% of the time, it's a waste of time... in online games (especially RTS, Fighting-games, FPS etc.) you need a challenge so you'll keep playing.. so it'll be fun
imagine you win 80% or 90% of your matches easily... then there's no motivation to keep playing that game and improving yourself.. rankings/ladders are absolutely needed for a game like Smash Bros.

and then i want them to announce that they'll immediately stop this whole "protect the children"-junk....it's not like only children use your systems.. and it's not like there are millions of pedophiles using your consoles just to get close to children

the children have parents to protect them, it is NOT your job, nintendo
treat your adult-customers like adults and give us the proper features/programs so we can interact with each other, it's really getting ridiculous

@Romeo right on, if Nintendo wants to protect the kids so badly all it needs is to find a way force an M rating into more complex communication apps and boom! no parents will be able to complain if things go wrong!

I still don't understand this site's obsession with Wayforward. Yes, they've made some good DSiWare and 3DSWare games, but them making the next Metroid game? Lol.

i'm not sure i'd want them to work on Metroid as well, but WayForward is pretty good.. that's for sure
i really enjoyed Mighty Switch Force 1+2 and Shantae 1+2.... still waiting for Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (release: Q1 2014), but Metroid... i don't know if i'd "trust" them with such a huge and important (to us Nintendo-fans) franchise

In case you missed it, I said they could make a new 2D metroid. Not 3D. You know, something like metroid fusion. No one should do 3D metroid except Retro Studios.

Why wait for a 2D Metroid that might never happen... I will buy me some ReVeN instead

..... it might also mean that the guys who made Other M shouldn't make 3D Metroid instead... though I heard it's not as bad as people make it look like.

Yes. And?

Overall, I think it was a step in the right direction. It definitely had its failings, mostly the characterization of Samus and pacing of the (dumb) story, but what it set out to do in terms of gameplay was actually very successful. I think that's the direction that the next 3D Metroid game should follow. Fix Samus's character, make cutscenes that can be paused or skipped, return to a more moody and haunting atmosphere, and you're pretty much good to go.

I really consider Prime more of a spin-off anyway. Prime 4 could still happen, and it would be great for Retro to handle it again, but as far as the 'main series' goes, I think Other M was the right direction gameplay-wise. It was a good transition from 2D to 3D platforming.

It's about time we had a follow up to Fusion though. Every Metroid game in the last 12 years as been a prequel or 'inbetweenquel.'

Probably because everyone tries to pretend that Samus has no personality

Next Level Games working on a 3DS Metroid and Retro working on either a new Super Metroid, new IP or a new Prime.

As long as its not like Other M...Why did Nintendo approve that game in the first place? Was it already so far along they didn't want to ruin their relationship with Team Ninja?

Oh and if its a new Prime game, please make it like 1 or 2 and not like 3 (which felt less isolated); MP 3 isn't bad and it has fun/novel mechanics like the grapple beam and a focus on visiting different planets, it wasn't the final chapter of the Prime series I was waiting for. Plus, I like motion control in shooters but I would've loved a Motion+ update or optional NGC-like controls. (Arthritis doesn't help)
(Just my opinion no facts or anything)

She can have a personality. I like my protagonists to have one. Even Link has a personality and he's been mute for a quarter century.

It's just that Other M was just not the right way to write her character. It's OK for a character to have insecurities, obsessions, and dark pasts. You could even say that a lot of characters base their whole appeal on that (eg. Batman). But to make your protagonist emotionally fragile, indecisive, submissive, and well, boring, is not a good creative decision.

It also committed one of my biggest pet peeves in character writing of all - making a female character's motivations based on men and motherhood. It's like TV/movie/VG writers (who are mostly men) aren't aware that women have a lot of the same goals and motivations as men do and don't need to be characterized by their uterus. Of course not all writers do this, but it is a sad trend. What's really upsetting is that Samus's gender was never important before Other M, but it suddenly became important. It's like Nintendo forgot what made her character so appealing in the first place.

I find it interesting how Other M was made by one of the co-creators of Metroid and yet everyone on the internet knows Samus better.

I want the next console Metroid game to follow Other M's path, as far as gameplay goes. Simply giving the player the gamepad or pro controller to use instead of just the Wii Remote would help a lot. And make it so you can move while in first person like in Skyward Sword! That was actually my biggest gripe about the game.

You say that as if you think Nintendo thought it was a bad game. Clearly they didn't. They were trusting Sakamoto to make a game in the series that he helped create. In fact, Team Ninja wanted the game to use the nunchuck, which I think it should have, but Sakamoto, or maybe Iwata or Miyamoto, wanted the game to only use the remote. There were other things that Team Ninja wanted to do, too, but I don't remember.

I think most Other M haters are mostly Prime fanboys who aren't familiar with any of the real Metroid games.

I feel like they were just trying to make Samus more human, not being sexist. And what made Samus so appealing in the first place? The fact that people thought she was a robot named Metroid or that she was a hot chick in a bikini?

I'm not trying to pretend that I know more about the character. I just know a thing or two about poor character writing in general, and Other M is a pretty good example of it. Maybe this is the way that Sakamoto envisioned her from the very beginning, but then that just makes her a poor character from the very beginning.

That said, I agree that Other M was a good game. My gripes with it are pretty much entirely directed at Samus's monotonous soliloquys about Adam and the baby. That, and it could have used more control options and pausable/skippable cutscenes, but those are small things that I'm sure Nintendo has learned from.

And what made Samus so appealing in the first place?

The appeal was that she was one of the first female leads ever that didn't treat her gender as a character flaw. Up until that point, females in fantasy/sci-fi were pretty much delegated to being the damsel in distress or the eye candy. Samus was a woman and it was very matter-of-fact. It was quite progressive at the time.

The bikini was rather curious, but I think that was due to the limitations of 8-bit. A bikini was just the easiest way to say "yup, that glob of skin-coloured pixels is female." I don't think it was intended as a sex appeal thing.

Sega bought Atlus a few months ago, and are doing pretty well for themselves, so I doubt Nintendo will buy them.

yeah it'd be more profitable for both(in short term) if they kept making those temporary partnerships every now and then.

I would want Nintendo to announce a 2D Metroid game either on 3DS or Wii U. That and maybe finally announce all the characters confirmed for Smash.

nah, it'd spoil the fun. they should leave a handful unconfirmed so the players will have a surprise when unlocking more characters!
