I find it interesting how Other M was made by one of the co-creators of Metroid and yet everyone on the internet knows Samus better.

I'm not trying to pretend that I know more about the character. I just know a thing or two about poor character writing in general, and Other M is a pretty good example of it. Maybe this is the way that Sakamoto envisioned her from the very beginning, but then that just makes her a poor character from the very beginning.

That said, I agree that Other M was a good game. My gripes with it are pretty much entirely directed at Samus's monotonous soliloquys about Adam and the baby. That, and it could have used more control options and pausable/skippable cutscenes, but those are small things that I'm sure Nintendo has learned from.

And what made Samus so appealing in the first place?

The appeal was that she was one of the first female leads ever that didn't treat her gender as a character flaw. Up until that point, females in fantasy/sci-fi were pretty much delegated to being the damsel in distress or the eye candy. Samus was a woman and it was very matter-of-fact. It was quite progressive at the time.

The bikini was rather curious, but I think that was due to the limitations of 8-bit. A bikini was just the easiest way to say "yup, that glob of skin-coloured pixels is female." I don't think it was intended as a sex appeal thing.

Preach it!
As a girl, I liked playing as a tough woman. I liked that Samus was tough enough to get the job done and she wasn't afraid to kick a few doors in to do it. I think before Other M we all had our own backstory for the character, and then when Other M came out we didn't like that they had come up with something that didn't match our "canon". Other M was so far from my original opinion of the character, it put me off completely. I think that's one of the breaks of finally giving voice to a character who has already been established for so long. Suddenly everything we thought we knew was completely incorrect, and it frustrated a lot of us. I had Samus pegged down as more of a Wonder Woman type of a character with some Batman edge.

Metroid Prime 4 for Wii U and Super Metroid 2 for 3DS would be ideal to me.

so you guys are saying they made Samus a weakling!?!?!?!
just another question are the cutscenes unskipable and the story relevantto the gameplay?
if the answer for both these questions is yes, good thing I didn't play this game

Ya, Metroid: Other M didn't really seem like it had Samus in it at all.

No, not physically weak. It's more of an emotional thing. After being accustomed to this tough-as-nails bounty hunter for a couple decades and, as Gamecubed said, imagining our own unique backstories for her, it's disappointing to find out that Samus has daddy issues, emotional breakdowns, some bizarre form of postpartum, and pretty much every other cliche "female" problem.

The unskippable cutscenes are not relevant to the gameplay. There's no quicktime events or anything like that. Just hope you don't have to pee or get a phone call during one of the 10 minute monologues.

The only piece of gameplay that I didn't really enjoy were the scanning parts. Sometimes, you go into 1st person view when the game wants you to look at something specific. Most of the things you have to find are pretty obvious, but some of them are tiny and subtle. It leads to some "Where's Wally" moments that can be frustrating.

But yeah, other than that, the controls are simple, responsive, intuitive, and the level design is pretty satisfying. It's a fun game. Just don't play it for the story

Temper your expectations, my list would be:

  • Zelda U trailer
  • Animal Crossing U announcement
  • Something random along the lines of NintendoLand/Wii Sports/Wii Fit
  • Something along the lines of Metroid/Kid Icarus/Starfox

If they do half of these I'm happy

What they are probably going to do (just Wii U):
Zelda U trailer + release window
Smash Bros U/3DS trailer + release date
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem gameplay trailer + release window (probably summer 2015)
Yarn Yoshi gameplay trailer + late 2014 / early 2015 release date
Miyamoto's New IP trailer + release date
NFC game trailer + release window
New trailers for X and Bayonetta 2 + release dates
If this was their E3 plan it would be pretty epic in my book!

I still don't understand this site's obsession with Wayforward. Yes, they've made some good DSiWare and 3DSWare games, but them making the next Metroid game? Lol.

In case you missed it, I said they could make a new 2D metroid. Not 3D. You know, something like metroid fusion. No one should do 3D metroid except Retro Studios.

I know what you said. The 2D Metroid titles are my favourite ones. I still don't think that Wayforward are qualified to make a 2D Metroid game for the 3DS. Their eShop games are good, but £30-40 retail games are different, and to be thrust into making that with a franchise like Metroid as a 3DS exclusive? I don't see it ever happening.

I can only see Zelda U, Shiggy's new IP and SMTxFE being the possibilities for E3.

Actually, I'd say E3 2011 is the best one Nintendo has ever had.

really?
Nintendo's 2010 E3 gave us so many unexpected surprises. Aside from the amazing unveiling of the 3DS and the wonderful hands-on reaction from the crowd when experiencing it's stereoscopic 3D, nobody expected Donkey Kong Country Returns(Retro revival from the dead), Kirby's Epic Yarn(Looks at those amazing unique and creative yarn-filled visuals),Golden Eye 007 Wii and. kid Icarus:Uprising(OMFG, even though it was nothing like the NES original gameplay-wise), Resident Evil: Revelations, ZELDA: Skyward Sword (ect ect) This was the most exciting E3 since Nintendo's E3 centered around their new system(at the time) the Wii imo.

Nintendo's 2011 E3 just didn't live up, i was expecting a lot more from nintendo's new Console, and the Wii U unveiling i found was extremely underwhelming. I remember being so disappointed, thinking that it was nothing but a half baked unexciting step forward(And backwards) in terms of innovation for nintendo.

2012 was weak, 2013's was a mixed bag and not taking the E3 show floor was a bad move on their part. the greatest thing to come out of that one was Super Smash Bros U which including my boy Mega Man. They better do something extrordinary for 2014, 90% of 3rd party developers have already abandoned wii(which i personally don't care for seeing as how some of the greats such as konami and capcom have crumbled to the waste side and have left for their classic franchises for dead or have played the 'outsourcing western game'), so NIntendo's got to deliver the goods themselves!

Another vote for 2010. The Goldeneye reveal trailer (and the subsequent crowd reaction) was pretty awesome.

These are the only things I'm hoping to happen (based in reality and not fanatic la-la-land):

  • Updates on SMTxFE and Yarn Yoshi
  • New IP reveal (guess this will be Miyamoto's)
  • Natsume's "surprise" is a new Harvest Moon for the Wii U
  • Pokemon Stadium, Coliseum, or Snap 2 for the Wii U
  • F-Zero U, Starfox U, or Punchout U

The only thing I need with the 3DS is more localization. Not all of which is Ninty's call unless they pull more Bravely Default cases.

Even wonder woman has her moments like samus in the new issue of SM/WW she spends most of it contemplating not visiting paradise island beofre helping supes with Zod and Faora.

While I feel the execution was flawed I like what Metroid Other M was trying to do. It reminds a bit of Halo 4 in the sense that it felt the need to expand on the main character being just a robot guy. I feel Halo 4 did a better good with humanizing Master chief due to the fact that there was other media out that expanded upon his character. Other M messed from the onset by letting game design improperly inform on the story. They needed to go with standard metroid trope of gaining abilities throughout the game, but thinking it was a smart idea for samus to not to use her full fire power over Adam's say so was pretty unwise.
Sakamoto is so in love with Super Metroid and the character of Adam that he made his self indulgent mess where he re iterated concepts we already knew about. Other M and the way samus behaves would have been much more accepted by fans as a prequel explaing the events that led up to samus leaving the Galactic Federation. But to be fair how Samus behaves toward Adam isn't excatly OOC if you've played Metroid Fusion which is the farthest game in terms of story.

The biggest problem with humanizing Samus is that Metroid Games haven't had any recurring cast or story plot points to relove around. To go back to Halo 4 the into cutscene uses the events of the prior games to ask the question if Master Chief was broken during the events of the prior games. We see this through the eyes of the creator of the Spartan II program.

'
The actual game itself uses the relationship between cortana and chief as the lynchpin of the story and what it really means to be human for our two characters. Cortana being the closest AI to human, and going rampant serves as a way for chief to strech out his emotional range. Sakamtoto wanted the same thing but Samus's relationship with Adam is forced at best without the proper backstory in past games. (With the expection of fusion, thank you GBA VC incoming).

Untitled

We than see toward the middle of the game where chief meets the crew of the Infinity and Lasky a charcater who had met chief years back during the War (which was a live action web series that came out a bit before Halo 4 launched. It goes back to the conversation of seeing Chief as more than a man as he's faced with the new generation of Spartans who you could argue have the more human element.

Untitled

The ending cutscene sort of speaks for itself

But back on topic I mostly want to see the mostly forgotten IP at E3.

I'm just a sucker for the hardware. It opens up more software possibilities. That's always a good thing, IMO. I personally was confused on why they had a GamePad at first, too, but considering that they already have the Wii remote, it makes sense that they would want to add more controller features aside from a standard controller.

They just want people to have versatile controllers, and I think that's a good thing.
