WWHD is a not a must-have to me cos there are many who don't find it sufficiently different to the original to justify the purchase.
Oh cmon, it's superior in every way! It's worth buying just for the swift sail. Not to mention the 10 other little tweaks that make it a much better game.
Like others have said, Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. To me, these are the best "must play" games.
I would also recommend Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. It's a very fun game, quite different from Mario Kart 8. I have both games, and they're both really fun in different ways. If playing online is important to you, then Mario Kart 8 is probably the better option. Transformed does have online, but the online is kinda dead in that game. Transformed is fun in single and multiplayer; there is something called the "World Tour" which is a single player mode consisting of a bunch of challenges to complete in order to unlock new cups and characters. The World Tour is quite long, so this game should keep you busy for a while. So if you really like racing games, make sure to consider getting Transformed!

And that's a lot, if you think about it. Really.
I pretty much agree. Not sure if I'll get Super Mario Tennis. But I've enjoyed games like Captain Toad, Kirby, Mario Party 10, Wii Sport U quite a bit. While I don't have regrets getting Game & Wario and Wii Party U... I'd wouldn't say they are essential. Oh, and I never got around to get NSLU.
The usual Nintendo games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc. I'd honestly say pick up a copy of CoD Black Ops II or Ghosts if you can. I'm pretty sure you can find a copy of either for $15 or less and there's still a handful of people playing them online.
If you go back to the earlier Wii U games like ZombiU, those games still matter and are cheaper now.

I suppose I should list the better games on the Wii U I've played, although I'm going to leave out virtual console games. There are many amazing games available through the Wii U virtual console, but I've not played many of them in their virtual console format. So this Wii U recommendation list will only include Wii U retail games and Wii U eShop games; no virtual console games or Wii games that you can play through the Wii U's backwards compatibility (though there are many I could recommend through this). So then, the following are my recommendations:
I would say the biggest 'Must Have' game on the Wii U is Mario Kart 8. I say this because it's the type of game that can be enjoyed by a wide audience. It doesn't have to be THE game you buy a Wii U for, but it's one you'd want access to as a Wii U owner. It's the safest answer the the question "I just got a WII U, what's a game I should get?".
