Depends on what your priority is I guess. You say play ZombiU through headphones? Well ok. I say go give The Books a spin. TBH I've never once listened to a stereo track though my headphones and thought "well, this isn't good enough. Where are the other three speakers?"

That's the weirdness of it, though. I mainly use my audio system for video games. Movies and music don't really interest me all that much. I feel like I get more from a video game then I ever can from watching a movie or listening to something. It still makes music and movies sound as good as they can through an audio receiver, but the interaction within video games is ultimately what has me hooked, so I don't even bother all that often with everything else. I bought my audio receiver for video games. The music and movies can always be there if I want them.

Also. it's not about whether I was like, "well, this isn't good enough. Where are the other three speakers?". I liked stereo systems so much, that I wanted the surround system. Stereo leads you to surround if you like it enough, and you can't have surround without stereo, even still. Once you have it, it's the going back part that is hard to do. I can manage without it, but I'd be lying if I said I'd rather have a pair of headphones. It's just whatever.

I'd recommend getting the HDTV. Wii U and PS4 games were meant to be played on a bigger screen, and they look absolutely glorious on an HDTV.

You can get a Vizeo 42" HDTV 120hz for $400-500 nowadays, and Vizeo has proved itself as one of the best brands on the market in my opinion. You definitely want 120hz- DO NOT BUY 60hz, you will regret it. My brother didn't take my advice and bought a 60hz HDTV and now wishes he had spent the extra $100 to get 120hz. You can definitely tell the difference between the two. I'd say 240hz is unnecessary though.

Most Wii U games are native 720p up scaled to 1080p, and PS4 games are about half 720p and half 1080p, roughly estimating. So having a TV capable of full 1080p would be a wise decision. Not that games wouldn't look good on a 720p screen, but they will look better with 1080p, especially on a larger screen.

As for headphones, The Wii U gamepad has a headphone jack that you can use to run audio from in many games. Granted, some only output certain audio streams through the gamepad, such as just chat or just sound effects, but some games let you choose whether you want to stream all the sound through the gamepad or not. The PS4 has an option to run sound through the controller headphone jack, all the sound. So you could almost get by without even needing a TV with a headphone jack. What I do though, for Wii U games that won't run full audio through gamepad, is use a $5 converter that basically takes the red and white audio out jack's of the TV, and turns them into a headphone jack, then I have a 6 foot headphone jack extension plugged into the converter, and I plug my Bose earbuds into the extension, giving me plenty of slack where I sit from my TV.

What I want is a TV that performs like Nvidia Lightboost on a suitable setup but nobody seems to make one.

ugh...

  • The Wii U outputs 60Hz, you don't need 120Hz
  • Vizeo? Really? Is this an alternate reality? Vizeo and Insignia? WTH. Seriously, I can't believe this
  • There's nothing wrong with gaming on a monitor. Because maths. 50cm away from a 32" screen? You'll be wanting it to be 4K. Couch distance away from 1080p? That thing could be 60" and still be ok.

tl;dr for the whole thread:
OP is using headphones, headphone cables are maybe 1.5m. If you're using them odds are you're within 1m of the screen. At 1m? 1080p? Get a 23" IPS panel from Asus, Samsung, Dell, LG or similar. Look for built in speakers, headphone out and at least one HDMI input. Can't go too wrong. End of discussion.

No tv is 120hz natively, plus those with interpolated 120hz 240hz and whatnot are somewhat fake so you should disable those features for a more responsive gameplay (lower input lag)
