So my wii got stolen a out a year ago along with all my metroid games. I never bothered getting another one. I wondering of getting the metroid trilogy is worth the $60+ premium I'm seeing it for or if there's another way to go. Thanks.
Yeah, buy the Trilogy disc, then you should get Super Metroid on the Wii U eShop, then somehow get your hands on Metroid: Fusion. You could try Metroid: Other M, but be warned; you may not like it very much, it's a 50% chance.

I would try Super Metroid off of the VC, it's a fan favorite, and is only $8, so you don't invest much if you don't care for it (though, granted, you'll probably love it). The Prime trilogy isn't a bad place to start either, and it's well worth that price.
I'd suggest starting with either Metroid: Zero Mission (if you can find a cart) or Super Metroid. The latter is probably the safer option, since it's more readily available as a digital download.
And if you actually find a copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy for just $60, buy it without a moment's hesitation.
In my opinion, Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion are the best and most user friendly. Super Metroid is not a bad choice for this purpose either, although it is more obscure than those two (some of the controls are a bit harder).
Metroid Prime is good, but hard. It's more fun when you've learnt how the series works.
I think you should start with Super Metroid since you've never played a Metroid game before it'll give you a general idea of how the Metroid series works. It's alot less harder and you won't get overwhelmed with the 3-dimensional space of the prime series. The one thing about Metroid is that it doesn't tell you where to go or what to do, you just have to figure it out on your own.

I do agree with Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission being more user friendly but I would say he should avoid playing those games since he's never played the series before. While these games are good they are way more linear than typical Metroid games so you might have a harder time adapting to the Prime series and Super Metroid if you get used to the more linear form of fusion.
Metroid Prime Trilogy is truly a fantastic game to start off with, but Super Metroid is also amazing and will kinda introduce you to the concept of the series.
Metroid Prime 1, 3, or Super Metroid are all perfect places to start. Fusion is great too, although its linearity doesn't give a good idea of it all.
And yes, Trilogy is worth the premium. It has Orange Box levels of value, and it all comes in a shiny box with some fantastic art.

Depends on what you are looking for. I would start with Super Metroid though. I don't recommend Metroid Prime as your first game, and that's not because I hate the series.
Anything but Other M
Metroid Prime: Hunters is my personal favorite, Super Metroid is just ehh for me (mostly because I haven't beaten it yet, lol)
I haven't played Metroid Prime 1, 2, or 3, but I heard they are all amazing so maybe the trilogy is a good place to start
I'm thinking about buying it myself too when I have extra money
The original and Metroid II are on the 3DS e-shop, and Metroid Prime Hunters is on the DS. I haven't played Metroid II, but I highly recommend you avoid starting with the original. (The remake, Zero Mission, should be fine, though)
I'd go with Zero Mission of Fusion, they're less "go find out yourself" then the ones on the 3DS eShop. When you've played one of those, go with Super Metroid or the Prime Trilogy! Have fun!

Yes get trilogy, it not only has all the prime games but lets you enjoy the first two at a slightly better resolution and use the same controller scheme in Prime 3 which was amazing and plays well for the first two games.
I would play the games chronologicly if you could
