Well, everything I thought about when I saw this thread title got discussed in the thread.
I was thinking a new Mario Kart game would be soon. I didn't realize the three year thing, but I did notice that Mario Kart games always come out towards the beginning of a console's life. It's actually one of the safest returning games for each Nintendo system. Not every system gets a Super Mario Bros. or Metroid game, but ever since the snes, they have all gotten a Mario Kart game. So I believe it's a safe bet Wii U will be getting a new Mario Kart in 2013 or 2014 at the latest.
If it does come out in 2013, I can see it being a game that starts with the whole two gamepads per system thing. Adding six players total for local play. I wouldn't mind seeing the game feature a sort of "double dash" mode, but not have the whole game be that way. Some sort of team mode where one player is using the wii remote (optionally with the Wii Wheel) to drive the kart on the tv and their partner uses the gamepad. They would be able to look in all 360 degrees and aim where each item gets thrown.
Definitely keep up with the customization features that have been coming up in Mario Kart games lately. But I would like to see it really fleshed out. The more customization options, the more variety the matches will be. Perhaps bring back exclusive items items again. Perhaps some depending on the character(s) and also depending on what all parts you have in the vehicle. Or maybe just change the odds of which items you're more likely to get or not get.
Bring back the "boo" item. Steal an item, turn invisible. Good times.
I wouldn't mind seeing retro DLC packs along with new, original DLC packs. Maybe we could get an SNES track pack, N64 track pack, etc. But more than four tracks per each pack.
I know some people would like a track editor / creator, but I think that's a bit too elaborate for a Mario Kart game. Maybe what we could get, though, is some sort of challenge editor / creator where you can pick a track and place items on it and set the rules for how to complete the challenge. (Collect all the coins, destroy all the snowmen, etc.)
Just no Blue shells and I will be happy. I don't even think there is a number for the amount of times where I am in first the ENTIRE RACE only to come in 6th or worse because of A LAST SECOND SHELL AT THE F***ING FINISH LINE!!! If there is something more annoying or frustrating than that in videogame history, please someone tell me!
Blue shells balance the game though. That would be like saying red shells are over powered because there are so many to be used every match. Nintendo needs to have it to where blue shells can only be summoned if the first placed racer is substantially ahead of the second placed racer.

Beating Ghosts 'n' Goblins only to have the game tell you to beat it again.
Or just no blue shells. What does throwing a blue shell if you are 10th or worse going to benefit you? Especially at the end of the last lap. A star or rocket would, but a blue shell... nope
If they do keep them, make them much less frequent and give the first place racer an item to counter it.
Mushrooms counter it. It can benefit every player behind fourth place if it hits multiple players in the explosion. Nintendo needs to execute the balance of items correctly yet still make it all enjoyable.

The thing about Mario Kart is you're not supposed to have one person in first place throughout the entire race. That's kinda the whole point of the game. If you could just beat everyone by driving better, then it wouldn't be a Mario Kart game. It would be grand turismo or something. Some Mario Kart games made it possible to where someone could get into first place and then be untouchable, because they'd be too far away for any items to really effect them. So the blue shell was invented.
@DudeSean
You can get in first place without using a blue shell, that's what the other 20+ items are for... including the red shells which I have no problem with
Saying you don't want Blue Shells in Mario Kart is like saying you want to play Mario without the Hammer Bros.... Tetris without the s-pieces... Pokemon without the legendaries.... If you want it to be purely about racing skill you're playing the wrong game because Mario Kart has always been about having victory not guaranteed. There's even strategy involved in how you handle the various versions of the Blue Shell when it does come your way. That's what makes Mario Kart Mario Kart.

Do you not understand what skywake or I are saying at all? The blue shell serves a very important purpose in the Mario Kart games. It's not supposed to be easy. It's not supposed to be a Sunday drive. It's bumper cars, man. You're supposed to get hit.

Do you not understand what I am saying. You can still have a HUGE challenge without the blue shells. There are other items that can help you win without the Blue Shell. Would take rubberbanding AI losses before I take a blue shell an inch from the finish and lose 6 plus place in the race
Mario Kart seperates itself from other racing games like Gran Turismo, forza and Need for Speed, with the inclusion of items. Getting rid of one item isn't going to radically change the game into a Forza Motorsport game. If I am correct I think there are still a bunch of other items to use. Did people have a blast before the Blue shell was introduced Yes! As a matter of fact, Mario Kart 64 still stands as one of if not the best in the series.
We know first hand it's unfair to lose because of a blue shell. It's the fact that it's still a fun game to play even with that drawback that you're not getting.
Mario isn't trying to be like other racers. It's a kart racer designed as a party game. Completely different sub genres.

No it's really not, I had way more fun before they included it. DD was alright, because it didn't use it nearly as much as now. Nowadays you won't go 30 seconds without getting hit by one. I know a lot of people me included that are really not sure if they even want to buy another Mario Kart game because of how ridiculously frequent the blue shell has been used it recent games.
