now the new nintendo consoles have some part of the name include the name of the console before it, and nintendo wants us to think of it as a whole new console... "wii" U, 3"ds"... it just makes it seem like an upgrade, but other than that, i'm fine with the name.
I'm perfectly fine with the name but I can't say I'd be surprised if they changed it before launch (maybe just to U?), especially with the number of consumers thinking the 3DS is "just another" DS.
It's silly that that should cause a problem now, especially when there were three different generations of Game Boy. I suppose, as long as the final Wii U design and its packaging are different enough to the revised Wii, there shouldn't be a problem.

Just like how the PS3 is another "Playstation"? Consumers are such hypocrites these days

I don't mind the name so much, since I play video games for the actual fun aspect (making a the name a running joke among friends contributes to that).
That being said, the console still has a bit of time left before release so the name has a pretty good likelihood of changing if they find people don't like it. I do think the name needs a bigger change from its predecessor or else Nintendo may have trouble getting people to understand the console is different from the Wii (the console's current design doesn't help this).

This. The name "PlayStation" is a family of consoles, a "brand name" if you will. The DS and Game Boy are the same thing, brand names for Nintendo's handhelds.

I like the name, but names these days hardly matter. I'm not understanding why people think it sucks. Adding a 2 or 3 after is just unimaginative and adding X is just cliche to make it sound cool. I almost much just gave up thinking about a name being cool or not ever since the first time I heard of Ipod. They can call it Dolphin, Megaton, or Monolith and once word gets out that its actually a fun system people will flock to it and it just becomes another label. My only disappointment was that since the Wii name was something for the mainstream it didn't sound as cool as NES, SNES, N64, or GC. Wii just sounded cool in a different way to me. If they called it Megaton/Monolith and I called it Mega/Mono for short, that would be awesome to me.
