What do you think is the best N64 kart racer? I had Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 was the only Mario Kart I never owned. Nostalgia aside, I think Diddy Kong Racing was the better game. Thinking about it objectively, Diddy Kong had a large story mode, an arguably better battle mode, more tracks (I think), more varied tracks, planes and hovercrafts. Mario Kart had a more recognizable and loved cast of characters and items.
What do you think is the best N64 kart racer? And don't say Mickey's Speedway USA.

I don't remember bad controls and what were the silver coins for. I don't remember.

Getting far enough in the adventure requires you to race the same tracks again, only this time to earn silver coins. It's something you need to get during the race, as well as finishing in 1st place. They are not currency you spend with or anything.

I'm considering downloading MK64 was I wait for Mario Kart 7. Does this sound like a good idea? I know it's a game most people either love or hate.
It's pretty bland for single player alone, it's going to be a hit or miss. If you have local friends, that'd be great.
DK Racing for me. I loved exploring around the world along with racing in different worlds. I also loved devoting a lot of time to the story mode. I was almost with the story mode...until my brother's friend stole our N64.
With one or two people DKR was the better game, as there was story mode and two-player story mode! Having hovercrafts, planes, and boss races helped differentiate it a lot! As did the lush, busy levels!
MK64 is still incredible though, but without friends around its outdone
I downloaded MK 64 and it's okay. I like its tracks a lot but the rubber band AI is weird. No matter what you do they find ways to be right on your tail, but at the same time, when they pass you they slow down so you can catch up. Makes for exciting races I guess.

If you have friends to play with, Block Fort and bomb karts will justify the purchase. Otherwise, not much going for it unless you just cannot get enough Mario Kart.
I didn't like DKR either, but I never got to try its battle mode. I could see that being all right.
DKR is my favorite, because of the adventure mode, the better tracks, the more fun gameplay (like planes and hovercraft), and all the unlockables. The only way I see MK64 as being superior is the power-ups.
Currently Playing: Xbox 360: Arkham City, MW3, Gears 3, UMV3, Battlefield 3 PS3: inFAMOUS 2, LBP 2. Rachet & Clank: All 4 One, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3 Xperia Play: Crash Bandicoot iOS: Sonic CD, Infinity Blade, Arkham City Lockdown, Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger
DKR had an awesome battle mode, even though there were only two stages to battle on.
@Adam, what do you mean by "bomb karts?" For some reason when playing in multiplayer vs. there are bombs on all of the racetracks, if that is what you mean. I don't really know why they did that though.

In battle mode for MK64, if you are eliminated you are resurrected as a bob-omb in a kart. You can't pick up items, but you can crash into someone and kill yourself for good to make them lose a balloon. It is a hilarious revenge mechanism.
I'm not sure what you mean about bombs being on all the race tracks. It has been a long time since I raced a friend in MK64.
Oh, I didn't know that. I guess the reason I didn't know is that I've only played with one other person and that sounds like it would only work with 3 or more people.
Idk, there are just yellow bombs every so often on the tracks when you have a vs race against another person. They walk back and forth and blow up if you run into them. It seems unnecessary to me. They have a tiny hit detection box though, because I often can't hit them if I try.
One thing I do like about this game is the "punch" the items have. Turtle shells fire off like missiles and greens go really fast compared to modern mario kart games. And when they hit, they hit hard.
