I second Catrap. It features a very innovative rewind system not unlike what is used in pushmo/crashmo. Also there is that miyamoto game. I think it's called mole mania?
@unrandomsam - considering not many people bring it up on occasion plus the fact that it's not easily accessible in stores (the physical cartridge) and that the American release got nixed twice, then I'm inclined to answer "yes, it is".
I second anyone who said Mole Mania, that game is really good. It's like what would happen if Zelda got combined with the puzzle genre (though I could do without the consistent beating sound any time you're low on health); of course I only played the Japanese version Mogurānya, but it's still fun.
Not really a great game (average at best), but I'm going to have to throw in Mickey Mouse: Magic Wands! (or Magic Wand! if you saw the title), for it is beyond obscure. Its visuals are average, the music feels unfinished a lot of the time, it's incredibly easy, the bosses don't put up a real fight, and the translation is so laughably bad. Even though it's not great, I do think it's a fun action/puzzler to play once in awhile (if only for its quirky nature and the awful translation). Interestingly enough, it's one of the few Kemco Crazy Castle licenses that retained the characters from the Japanese original (as opposed to being altered like most of them). I'll say this much though; I liked it a lot more than I did Mickey's Mediocre Chase on the Game Boy. Now that one was a bitter disappointment.
There was this one game I used to have. I can't remember what it was called, so I'll describe it.
It had randomly generated areas everytime you booted up the game w/o a code, you could change what weapon/skill/magic you had by picking them up(swords, rings, rods), there were puzzles, and you could play with another player if you had 2 carts and the link cable.
From what I recall, it was a pretty fun game, but I have no clue what's it's called. I'll try and look around online, but this was like16 years ago and I only had it for a little while. It was the grey GB cart.
EDIT: I think I may have found it. I think I might be talking abou Roland's Curse. All I know is that there were rings; one of which let you turn into a tree, and you had a sword. You could find random weapons in the field.
A game can be easily available and not well known, so being on the eShop doesn't prevent a game from being obscure per se.
Are Catrap and Avenging Spirit obscure gems? They are certainly less obscure now than they were before getting re-released, but there hasn't been much talk about either game outside of the week or two after release so anyone buying a 3DS now could probably consider them obscure.
