Topic: GameCube a Flop?

When I was a kid I didn't have Xbox or PS2, and frankly I wouldn't have wanted them as most of the games I wouldn't have been old enough to play. Sonic Heroes, Underground 2, Melee, Luigi's Mansion, TMNT Battle Nexus, and Tales of Symphonia. I never was bored or found the selection lacking, and most everyone had a Gamecube too where I lived.

In my area, pretty much everyone loved the N64 but hated the GameCube. I personally preferred the GameCube over the 64.

I have only had my Game Cube for about a year, but I really enjoy playing my Zelda games on the system. I especially like the Game Cube Player attachment for Game Boy games. The Wavebird is probably my favorite Nintendo controller.

It was Nintendo's least (not counting Virtual Boy) console, and they still made a profit. Even if it is their least, remember Nintendo makes TONS of money on their consoles. Their least can still be very high. It wasn't a flop; they still made millions off the GameCube.

"Flop" is hard term to define - probably depends on what your expectations were.

Looking back now, the GameCube was profitable and offered a bunch of good games (including many exclusives). It's still fun to play and some games have attained "classic" status - polished experiences like Eternal Darkness, Fire Emblem, Ikaruga, Zelda, Paper Mario, Resident Evil, Rogue Squadron, Tales of Symphonia, and Viewtiful Joe. So even if it was the least successful of the big three consoles that generation, I think GameCube was a good system.

I had a lot of fun with my gamecube back in the day, of course 70% of it was thanks to the awesome game boy player, the wii U should take note of this

Generally I liked the Gamecube. But at times it was frustrating waiting for something I wanted to play. The Wii also had that feeling. You had to patient in waiting for your games.

Still playing 3DS but will have Switch soon for multiplayer with friends. I miss you guys! Adam, Joni, Gavin and the rest of the Blue Rogues from the Phantasy Star Zero Days.

I wouldn't say so. So many great games, my personal favorite console

The Gamecube was a horrible console. It had a couple of good games like Metroid Prime and Mega Man Network Transmission, but then a whole lot of nothing. I had it when my PlayStation 2 broke, and I still had nothing to play on it. I just had to get my PS2 repaired to keep playing worthwhile games, because the Gamecube really didn't have a whole lot of them.

Also, the Gamecube controller was really uncomfortable and had a terrible D-pad.

I had like 20 GCN games I played at least once a month at the time. I know PS2 had more games, but if you looked for the good GCN games, you'd probably have just as many games as a PS2 owner buying just anything off the shelf.

Sonic Adventure 2, Pikmin 1 & 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart: DD, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Super Mario Sunshine, Starfox Adventures and Assault, F-Zero GX, 1080 Avalanche, Pokemon Colleseum and XD, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Four Sword Adventures, Wario World, Resident Evil 0-4, Sonic and Megaman Collection, Pac Man World 2, Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, Mario Party, GameBoy player with GBA games, Bomberman Generation and Jetters, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Mario Power Tennis, etc.

Those are the games I played most just off the top of my head. I had more GCN games than lots of people had for their PS2 and Xbox consoles.

I just think if you had already dedicated lots of time to buying PS2 games and such, of course you weren't playing GCN.

There was still lots to play even without every multiplatform game.

I played Super Smash Bros Melee for 4 months straight before my bro got Sonic Adventure 2 when the GCN was fairly new. Pretty much all I played on GCN were exclusives, but I still had tons of games on GCN that I prefered over PS2 or Xbox games.

I do agree the d-pad was pretty crappy, but everything else was good.

Everyone will always end up playing the system of their choice. That was GCN for me in the 6th gen.

I can't remember the last time there was a true console flop, beyond the Jaguars, 3DO's, CD-i's.

The D-pad may not have been the best, but never has a controller fit in my hands more perfectly than a Gamecube controller. It's like it was custom made for my hands.

I had a gamecube and a PS2 that generation. I used the Gamecube for Super Mario Sunshine, Melee, Luigi's Mansion, and other Nintendo exclusives. But 80% of my playtime went to the PS2. The Gamecube controller felt nice, but the actual games weren't okay, while the PS2 blew me away with all of the awesome games.

I don't count them when in progress, or Wii U could qualify. There could be other no chance consoles I haven't heard of. Mainly, the big 3 have done fine.

Woops, forgot the Dreamcast.

Ya, the OUYA is bombing pretty bad. It was technically free for the OUYA team to release, so it's the Kickstarter funders that kinda lost that one, unless they have something else in mind for the console besides getting what's on the online store.

Also, about the PS2/GCN discussion... I was one of the ones that preferred GCN over any console at the time. I probably would have liked Xbox if I understood better what Xbox Live was, but I wasn't really aware of online gaming.

I liked Battlefront 2 and God of War, but that's basically it. I also wanted those Resident Evil multiplayer games(I think it was called Survivor), but those did pretty bad on PS2.
