Well a certain game came out in November of '98, and still holds the highest rating to this very day, as well as more "Best Game Of All Time" awards than any other game.
Ringing any bells?

I remember a game that gets more credit than it deserves and really doesn't impress anymore after more than 10 years of advances in its genre, but I don't think that game has anything to do with Ys.

BedCommando is referring to the thread title and insinuating that Ocarina of Time is the perfect game because it has a lot of accolades garnered through nostalgic praise, and that no game (Ys or otherwise) could possibly stand up to it because the critics and community keep harping on about it. Um, no. Play it next to a number of more recent action-adventure titles - even in the Zelda series - and you'll see how dated it is and how much it's since been improved upon.

Because critics really provide the most reliable opinions about games you'll find, and you should listen to them.

If you actually play a game and really do find it's the best experience you've ever had, then that is a totally valid opinion and no one can tell you otherwise. It's your experience.

I don't know what's worse, those articles or the articles those poorly written articles are insulting.

But that asside, I agree with everything else you just said. If Ys Seven is the perfect game for you, then it is. That's what personal taste is all about. While I doubt I'll like Ys Seven as much as Metroid Prime 3 (my vote for a perfect game), nothing I say is gonna make Swerd_Murd believe that MP3 is better because he's already experienced Ys Seven and knows that it does and is everything that he needs a game to do and be (just as MP3 did for me), while MP3 probably doesn't. That's the beauty of personal tastes, man.

Well surely critics of critics aren't the most credible lot either. At the end of the day, the only credible people are the players (to themselves) and the developers (without whom we would have no games to play or critique at all). Ah, the simple dichotomy of audience and creator.

On-topic: if I had a PSP I would go and get this game right now.

@Everyone. if this truly was a better game, than more people would have seen it as so, and rated it higher. Since the gaming industry is so diverse in opinions of what is good, and what is bad, you have the take the medium, which is why Metacritic exists. it gives us that medium across gamers of all varieties.
Also, newer =/= better, the same can be said for older =/= better, so don't try to bring in age into comparisons.

Right, but your stance is shaky for a number of reasons.

1. Metacritic has been shown to be a deeply flawed system. Numerical scores can only be used to compare one game's score to other scores on the same website, because each site has their own scoring criteria. A score of 3/5 stars does not equate to 60/100 - it is usually perceived as higher, around 70-75. Then we have sites which only use a maximum of 4 stars; even worse. They are not comparable and you cannot just take a mean of different scales expecting to have an intelligible outcome.

Lewis Carroll, 'Alice in Wonderland' wrote:

The Hatter looked at the March Hare, who had followed him into the court, arm-in-arm with the Dormouse. `Fourteenth of March, I think it was,' he said.

`Fifteenth,' said the March Hare.

`Sixteenth,' added the Dormouse.

`Write that down,' the King said to the jury, and the jury eagerly wrote down all three dates on their slates, and then added them up, and reduced the answer to shillings and pence.

2. After you have experienced a game, your opinion overrides everyone else's from your perspective. Life is the best teacher. If I play E.T. and find it really enjoyable (heaven forbid), there is no amount of writing you could do to change what I experienced. These people have played Ys 7 and found it to be an amazing experience. I couldn't tell them the fun they had was wrong.

3. Lol, who said anything about newer = better? Have you not read the numerous topics around this forum about how games are getting worse? Putting it in perspective: it's a logical thing for developers to look at an existing good game and use it as a foundation for further advancement in the genre. That is exactly what has happened since OoT was released.

4. If OoT was not from a highly known series like Zelda, nor a heavily-promoted first-party Nintendo property, it would not have received as much attention as it did. Fact. Hype is built by existing fanbases and companies pushing their franchises using whatever means possible - reviews, ads, word of mouth. This is known as marketing, and is a central part of the games industry. Nintendo happens to have a lot of marketing muscle, for obvious reasons.

Wouldn't it be great if games really did get mass attention just because they were good? What a dream that would be. This would be a very different industry if that was the case.

P.S. I think you're taking the thread title way too literally.

EDIT: And I'm done discussing this topic.

I've often dreamt of living in such a world...a world where Baten Kaitos got another sequel and sold millions, where people realized the Madden Franchise is actually 11 releases of the exact same game, and where reviewers that give GTA 4 a 10/10 don't also give Castlevania Lords of Shadow a 4/10.

And yeah...I made this topic title cause A) It's arguably the best game in its genre, and I'd personally give it a 9+/10, and B) I really wanted people on this site to know this game was both good and existed, since as the holy man pointed out--simply being a remarkably solid, amazing game sadly isn't enough to get you noticed in the industry anymore. There's this magic combination of luck, timing, and recession-laden finances in order for lesser-known games to really get the market saturation they deserve.

@BedCommando - hope you don't feel this is a personal assault or anything--I doubt you'd find many people that don't think Ocarina of Time is a solid game. I'm one of these people--it's a fun game with some great puzzles. I'd put it in the same boat as Final Fantasy 7..stellar gaming experience--received many nigh-perfect reviews around the time of its release...however, as time has gone on and other, more polished entries (of both the same series and other similar games in the genre) have come out, the flaws of the originals have become much, much more noticeable by comparison.

I began playing this game a couple of days ago, and holy crap I love it.
Though the story isn't exactly its strongest point, the combat and the challenging bosses are amazing. And the soundtrack is fantastic too; I'm so glad I went with the Premium Edition and got my Soundtrack Selection. I only wish it had Children in the Shadows on it, because I love that melody.
I looked around on some reviews, and I must say I'm a bit disappointed at the relatively low scores it has gotten, but then again it hasn't received many reviews at all. I've certainly become a fan anyway, and I look forward to playing the rest of the games. Now if only they could remake Ys IV and V for the PSP too, I could have my whole Ys collection on one console.

Oh, and a question: When you meet Geis for the first time, do you get anything worthwhile if you defeat him? I got a bit over-confident when he only had like 300 HP left, then he beat me with a combo.

I have a Backloggery now! Nothin' fancy, but feel free to add me as a friend.

Opinions are varied and reviewers have tastes...but this is nothing compared to the "Blue Shadows" incident...

Is there a demo of Ys 7 to play on PSN? I prefer a "try before you buy" option...

As for the OoT argument...I never liked Zelda...but that game in particular has aged horribly...despite being a good game to many people.

My Starloggery

Main Final Fantasy & Quest/Shinobi Team fan...but I do like many SEGA games and a few Nintendo games.

I can be cute if I want to be, but I choose not to...as it's not my style.

SwerdMurd

@Mickeymac - Oh you.

@Starlight - Sadly, there's no demo available for Ys 7... And I doubt I need to make another message saying "it's only 30 bucks and you will undoubtedly enjoy it" because everything I've posted in this topic has had that general undertone...or overtone....or I guess just plain-old tone. I agree though--a well-made demo could be quite lucrative for XSeed in this case.

@Axo - you and me both man...How this game hasn't averaged in the mid- to high 9s, I'll never know. In terms of Geis...I really don't remember. I'm pretty sure I beat him but I don't recall if I got an item or not...it's been a few months, and I've gotten Ys: Oath in Felghana since then and that's been receiving the brunt of my gaming malice....seriously, that game on Nightmare makes this one look like a cakewalk. I'm replaying Oath on Inferno now...it's so hard I catch myself laughing when I die instead of being frustrated (normally because I've barely even hit the boss )

Also--I dunno what difficulty you're playing on...but you're about to hit one of the most difficult bosses (my friend says he's the most difficult) in the game in the arena...Adol, unarmed (crappy first sword), fighting a boss with like 12k HP. It's gross and required umpteen retries. Granted, you posted this 20 days ago so you've probably already beaten him
