Of the following, Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Bandai Namco, Which Japanese publisher is the worst when it comes to releasing japanese games in the west? I personally think it's a 3 way tie between Sega, Nintendo, and Square Enix.

Capcom because I really want E.X Troopers for 3DS localized and Square Enix because there's a Dragon Quest game for 3DS in Japan that I want localized. Nintendo isn't THAT bad at localizing.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Nintendo has improved a ton in the past couple of years, to the point that they are literally publishing other people's games.

I'd say tie between Sega and Square Enix. Square Enix is probably objectively worse nowadays at this but they still matter despite that. Sega wouldn't even exist anymore if they didn't release Sonic games and PSO2 not coming over here is the dumbest idea.

Does Sega even publish non-Sonic games in NA anymore?

Sega.

Atlus is possibly the best localizer.

Not in Europe. :/

Bandai Namco used to be the worst but now the worst is Sega.

Oh lol, thought thread was about who localises badly. Natsume.

But people who don't localise.. SEGA, definitely. If I had to make a list, it would go Nintendo > Capcom > Square Enix > Bandai Namco > Sega with Konami in a black hole somewhere.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Sega doesn't even seem to port the AM2 stuff which is what I want.

As someone who enjoys Dragon Quest games a lot, here's a list of games Square Enix haven't localised or even announced any desire to localise:

  • Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
  • Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 2 (3DS)
  • Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D (3DS)
  • Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Cobi/Tara's Adventure (3DS)
  • Dragon Quest X (3DS/Wii U)

Since I'd buy 4 of those titles in a heartbeat you can pretty much tell what my answer is.

To be fair, SE has spent the last 2 or so years "evaluating" the market for a western release of DQVII3D. Not quite sure what there is to evaluate though. DQ IX did respectably. The remakes of DQ4-6 did respectably. It can be concluded that there is a respectable audience for DQ games on Nintendo handhelds.

Phew, just saved SE all that money they were going to spend on "evaluating."

They localised Bravely Default, which they themselves acknowledged as a risk, yet somehow they decided not to localise Dragon Quest VII; a game that will undoubtedly sell better, and already has an English translation from the original PS1 version. Of course this problem wouldn't be as severe if Nintendo stopped region locking their consoles.

DQ7 would absolutely be successful in the west, but I dunno about more successful than BD. BD recently passed the million mark with about 600k of those outside of Japan. Not quite as well as DQ9 did outside of Japan, but it did have a much higher installed base to work with.

But yeah, the work is pretty much already done for them. All it would require is the language patch that they already have for PS1, and it's guaranteed to sell 500k copies, maybe even a million. Not localizing it is baffling.

Nintendo localized and published Bravely Default everywhere outside Japan actually.

I have a feeling if it's Japanese and does not have Final Fantasy in the title, it's not getting localized (mobile doesn't count).

I would say Sega because they don't localize any of their games anymore but they do own Atlus.

1. SEGA, definitely them. 2nd. I would say Square Enix, but they do localise their stuff, for completely different platforms no one asked for! Joint 3rd. Capcom & Bamco are just strange at localising.

Konami have nothing to localise, so they're a non factor.

Atlus for sure is the worst, if it wasn't for SEGA buying them I wouldn't be surprised if SMT IV would have never came to Europe.

Square Enix. Although hopefully after BD's sales overseas they'll start progressing past this perception of "JRPGs don't sell in the West."

Despite the Rainfall operation, I don't think Nintendo is even in the top list. They localize most of their games, and the ones they don't are usually super niche
