Heard GameStop are closing down a lot of their stores. Curious to know what people here think of GameStop.

I visit their stores at least once or twice a year, the staff is always nice, and my transactions have been quick and final.

My experience as an "outsider" has been 100% positive, so it's sad to hear they'll close down so many locales.

Dunno why everyone hates them, never had any issues at all and use them quite frequently.

So you don't have a problem with them giving you 2$ for a new Switch and then selling it for 500$?

I rarely trade in systems, and when I do, I get plenty out of it, especially for an old system. Think I got a good amount when I traded in my DSi and game or two, ended up getting two 3DSes for the price of one. (which was a present for my sister)

This is going to be a frustrating experience for everyone if you are only looking for one-sided comments.

Nope. Comment however you like as long as you're being honest.

GameStop is my absolute last choice for a gaming store when I need to buy. I will only buy there under two occasions. First, when a game is exclusive to them (ala Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii). Second, when they have some great can't beat deal. The later rarely happens and even with their rewards program I can't see a big benefit to it. I have a Best Buy GCU account that for $30/2 yrs gives me 20% off pre-orders, games in general, toys to life (like Amiibo, LEGO Dimensions, Disney Infinity, and Skylanders). But on top of that it stacks with their already good sale prices they frequently offer. I buy enough that they offer free shipping and I actually got my Nintendo Switch and a few accessories a day early shipped to my house. I typically opt for in-store day one pickup, but in the case of the Switch it was shipping only.

I've just had too many bad experiences with GameStop and my order being cancelled, or in trying to pre-order amiibo a few years back. I waited in store for two hours, fourth in line and only the first three got the amiibo they wanted. By the time it was my turn they were sold out. The associates that work there are great and I feel welcome there, but the incentives are just lacking, especially when it comes to discounts, credits, and trade-in prices (that Best Buy also offers and typically at better pricing). Also their bundles are a joke, I had to buy a canvas picture of Princess Peach and one of Bowser with my NES Classic Mini to even be able to get one from them for $120.

Gamestop is a terrible store that I have had almost nothing but positive experiences with. Absolute best way I can put it.

Just don't expect a remotely reasonable deal for trading in games.

Not a huge fan of Gamestop. I miss the mom and pop videogame stores. My biggest complaints are that they will sell opened games as brand new. They even opened my pre-order once and tried to tell me it was new and they just needed a demo case for the shelf. I asked them why they would open my game to advertise a game they only received one of. That ended up going to the district manager who was confused why I thought a game that had been opened, handled, and had a sticker put on the game case was no longer new. Insane!

I no longer purchase from or visit the stores. I don't buy used games that they would carry (AES cartridges, early Nintendo games) and I don't resell my games so Gamestop doesnt have much use for me.

Well, I almost completely stop going to Gamestop when they didn't give me my preorder bonus (a keychain) for Smash 3DS because I didn't have the Gamestop card.
Fact is, the card wasn't needed to get the bonus, it was needed to know that they broke the day one (because they tell you only if you pay for the card) and they gave all the bonuses to other people because I was late.
Where "late" was the day one morning.
And the keychains were all out the day before, when the game wasn't supposed to be on the shelves.
And they told all of this to me in a very rude manner, like "we were suppose to tell you but if you don't give us money we won't".

After that I bought 2 games from them just because they were immensly cheap, but this means like 1 game every 500 days.

I didn't care for the keychain, of course. But they straight up lied to me with no guilt at all.

It's dangerous to go alone!

Gamestop here in Norway is terrible. Pretty much all New games are much more expensive at Gamestop than elsewhere.
In most cases when trading in games, you end up paying the same for a New game than buying it elsewhere.

So in the end, it's just best to buy a New game elsewhere and keep your old games for the same amount of Money.

No we don't, because they don't do that.

My Wii U: $300 new
Traded it for about $100
It's now $260 used

You may want to use actual stories and not pre-meditated biased reviews.

yeah, I couldn't have expressed it better.
They are a chain of shops like any other. Yeah, trade-in rates are terrible, but all stores have these awful rates - traded-in cars, guitars, records, gold...you almost never get a good deal from a chain store, or any store.

And it's true their prices for new items are the highest you'll get anywhere, but some of their 2nd hand prices are unbeatable. I bought most of my PS3, DS, Wii and 360 games from them for €5 or less. Plus the possibility to check which store carries what new/used game directly from their website is just very practical.

I'd say it's a very good shop for occasional purchases, as long as you don't depend too much on them.

Only experienced them during my stateside visits but overall have been good. The best was when I wanted a copy of Arc Rise Fantasia and although they didn't have it in stock, the manager said there was one at another GameStop he drove past on his way to work so he could bring it in for tomorrow; and he did!

I've also seen the infamous "circle of life" in action (supposedly) but also seen resistance to it. On numerous occasions I asked for sealed copies of games on shelf and they provided (or going behind to the store room to pull out special edition rarities) but I've also seen them say they don't have it sealed only for me to notice a copy when they open the drawer (although that was once back in 2011).

Have also had the usual point card and preorder pushes but saying I'm from the UK usually (but not always) stops that discussion quickly.

I can only speak for our german gamestop, but oh boy, THEY SUCK! I bought a "new" 3DS game once and guess what? IT HAD A SAFE FILE ON IT! And they wanted the full price from me. On top of that, I sold my Xbox360 like 2 years ago, I went to gamestop first and guess what for 20 games + console + 2 controllers they wanted to give me 120€! Well I solld it on ebay for almost 300€. Sorry but gamestop is just awful in my opinion. I prefer Amazon, Ebay and our german Technic stores "Saturn" and "Mediamarkt".

Talk about hyperbole.

Gamestop gives pretty good credit on most Nintendo stuff. ESPECIALLY if you're smart and take advantage of promotions. I traded in a handful of old games a few months back and was able to fully payoff preorders for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 when they had their bonus credit for Switch preorders thing going. They also regularly feature good promotions on big new games like Pokemon and Resident Evil.

just to mention: two years ago they used to sell second-hand Xbox360s + one controller + one game for €59.98. So, unless you had any rare/expensive game among the ones you brought them, I would say they offered you an almost fair price.

But this is the nature of all shops that do trade-in. There's always a huge difference between selling to a store and selling privately - just try and sell your car to a retailer and then to a private.
