As far as I know, it represents the other end of the extreme movements in gaming. Like most movements, it started out with good intentions, but it unfortunately became a breeding ground for extremists with personal agendas. The voices or reason, those actually trying to advocate positive change in the industry, are drowned out. The most common criticism of Gamer Gate is that it's being abused as a soapbox for misogynists.
The industry does need change, but with loud, obnoxious, self-serving, and dishonest movements like Gamer Gate and Feminist Frequency out there stinking up the airwaves, it's hard to move forward.

It started out as an organized campaign to harass a female dev. by angry, misogynistic neckbeards because her boyfriend posted an angry rant about the people she may or may not have slept with. The whole Gamegate thing was rotten from the beginning.

people she may have slept with who were involved in games journalism.

Blue blue.

At this point, that's become a minor detail in this sea of stupidity...

Is it really that recent? I thought it originated before the Quinn incident.

Well that's sort of the problem while there may be a conflict of interest when it comes to sleeping with someone who reviews the content you make, at the end of the day most people tend to date people within their industry or where they work. Most of the guys complaining are the same donkey hats complaining about mans rights or white privilege being taken advantage of.
I mean the Zoe Quinn thing happens to be a symptom of the larger problem with the big media coverage of gaming websites these days. She happened to be pointed out due to being a woman and the current backlash indie games are getting right now. The main problem is that the gaming press/media has become far too chummy with the game developers rather they big AAA guys or small indie developers.
It sort of says alot when Polygon kills their great feature work for click bait titles or when you listen to the IGN sites are pretty much exenstions of PS Blog and Major Nelson.
It says alot that alot of the digging on current gaming events like Destiny, and Drive Club screwing up despite PSN being paid are only serious being disscussed on gaf and reddit The same thing with most game leaks or digging into what studios are working only coming from those instead of sites proper. Yet comics, movies, TV, and tend to have rumors come from the industry based websites,

Sort of, I remember reallying starting with the whole tropes vs women kick starter and while people had good points against her, it quickly led to stupidy. I do remember Quinn got a ton of hate around the time depression quest first came out but that was more about it not being a real game like Gone Home.

GamerGate originated as a campaign to protect games from several reasons; the propagandized changes some feminists wanted to make to the gaming industry, as well as the corrupted gaming journalism in general. The original concept was good, it was there to protect the existing games, and the industry. Some, however, have used the term in conjunction with the counter attacks on these gaming journalists and feminists. Therefore spoiling the entire word, and drenching the term GamerGate with the same negativity as the feminists and corrupt gaming journalists have.
I think this describes the situation perfectly; ''The fact of the matter is, #GamerGate is a diffuse, diverse grassroots movement with lots of different viewpoints. It’s hard to get a grasp on it sometimes, even when you try. There are good and bad sides to it, like any grassroots movement.''
A thing that did more harm than good at this point.
The fact that people @Ralizah and Todd in the Shadows know it for the abuse (caused by the a**holes of the group) they've most likely seen first and second hand and assume that's what it was about, should speak volumes about it.
Though to be fair, creating these in response to the abuse you're getting is never a smart idea. To avoid naming names, she should of just ignored it rather than just acknowledging the a**holes responsible.
She still didn't deserve any of the crap she got, period.
I wonder if Gamersgate are happy with how close this thing is to their name (Afaik they are nothing to do with each other).
Whenever I see this I usually think about what I have bought from Gamersgate.
(Funny how online stuff affects people though. I see it the same as say offensive graffiti I would rather it not be there but it doesn't affect me much).

Honestly, it's a good article, if you want to know more.
Protecting the industry from what, exactly? What corruption? What "propagandizing changes?" A few feminist bloggers and Anita Sarkesian are not a threat to gaming culture. Not every person who criticizes the sexist status quo of the industry needs to be stamped out like a bug.
