I agree with @CanisWolfred on this one, we're just discussing.

As for great single player campaigns, I agree that Halo 2 has an amazing one. As for one that hasn't been mentioned yet, House Of the Dead Overkill for the Wii was great! Easily my favorite story for an on the rails shooter!
Although they're not the most sophisticated of FPS campaigns, I generally like single player of the Serious Sam games. They get really crazy and are great mixes of classic gameplay with surprisingly sensible level design. The campaign of Serious Sam 3: BFE is so perfectly paced that it's probably the pinnacle of what can be achieved with a non-stop action game. The game has the perfect balance of continuously ramping up to the next arena while topping the previous one, so much so that I'll be amazed if Croteam can replicate that magic anywhere in Serious Sam 4.

Since others have mentioned some open world shooters, my recommendation is going to be Red Dead Redemption.
The wild west isn't a theme that's explored too often in gaming, and no matter whether you're slowly fighting your way through cramped environments (such as a mine, or a mansion room by room), taking part in a large frentic battlefield (such as fighging through a large valley, or raiding a fortress), shooting out on horseback (riding ahead/alongside a train to protect it from bandits), or a high noon style one on one gunfight, the shootouts are always tense.
Also has an interesting story, being an outlaw out of time, riding along the shadows of the old west as it gives away to modern culture.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

They would be if not for the auto-aim button they put on one of the analog stick buttons. Once I discovered that button the shootouts became way too easy.
@Mahemoth - I keep hearing that the Timesplitters games have great singleplayer campaigns, but I always end up playing quick matches with bots whenever I play it. That alone was a roaring good time, too.

I always wanted to get into Serious Sam, but never really could. Then again, I only played the demo to the First Encounter years ago. I see the Serious Sam Collection is really Cheap on Amazon...think I'll give that a shot...
If you enjoyed Metro, the STALKER games are great as well. Buggy as hell at some points, but there are community patches that fix nearly all the issues. That being said, I played most of Shadow of Chernobyl and only had 1 bug that actually affected gameplay.
Star Fox Assault and the Halo series are the only shooters I've encountered with good single player campaigns. I think Star Fox Assault counts as most of the time you're not in an arwing whereas the others in the series are either nowhere near shooters or the on rails type which also doesn't count.

And don't forget the community mods that make the game look stunning. If you like western RPG's Stalker is definitely recommended. Don't expect an amazing story though.

To be fair, the Serious Sam games are very much based on trial and error gameplay. If you're not willing to put up with dying dozens of times and remembering to quicksave every few minutes, then the games aren't for you. On the bright side the level design feels a lot more engaging than other FPS games and there's no other games that comes close to the enemy body count that the Serious Sam games have.

Well, when I was contemplating paying $15 for First Encounters, I was hesitant to give it a shot. But I'll try to give them a fairer shake since I got all 3 for $10 plus DLC.

I have all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, but I've yet to play them I wanted them on sale, since I knew they were buggy, but by the time I got them I was falling out of love with any game that wasn't a Turn-based RPG. I'll get to them when I can, and I'm glad you reminded me of them.
@SuperWiiU - I just got Doom 3: BFG Edition for the PS3 from Gamestop today. Think I'll give it a whirl later today.
Spec's Op's The Line if you want to play a military shooter that actually has a deep story. It's deep and makes you think but if you already know the story of the game then don't play it,cause that's what the game is going for a deep story.
Don't oversell it. It's story isn't that deep, it just takes a different perspective than most realistic looking military shooters.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

You sound like someone who can really identify with the protagonist of the game.
