Topic: How Hype can kill games

Weve seen it with Watch_Dogs before, and from what ive gathered, we might see it again with Destiny.
Like WD, Destiny has been hyped to no end, even its box labels it as "THE next gen shooter", its advertised as a revolution, its marketed as an evolutions and yet...
Most people ive talked to who got the game and whos opinions im rather fond of all had the same reaction to it: "Meh..."
Like Watch_Dogs, Destiny isnt a bad game, but it got crushed by its own hype if you talk to the players themself instead of looking up professional reviews.

What do you guys think about it ? Do you think that overblown marketing can actualy do the gam ein question any favors or do you feel that the growing expectations coming with it wil only lead to disappointment, no matter how good the game actually turns out ?

If you can't temper your expectations by managing your hype, then it is your fault. Don't sink in hype, manage it. Destiny has its problems (for me) which have absolutely nothing to do with its hype.

Don't be stupid and fall into hype. Yes, destiny isn't the biggest thing since ever. Honestly the fact that any people believed that is only a good thing for the developers and publisher of the game. Why advertise the game honestly when you can hype up a bunch of people who go and do something stupid like pre-order it. Don't get your hopes too high, and always wait for reviews. Do that, and this will never be a problem ever again.

Many games aren't advertised honestly. I hate seeing live action stuff to advertised a video game. I know nothing about how Destiny was advertised though.

I stopped believing the hype ever since 1988 because of Public Enemy.

@Ryno haha nice one

i wonder if this game will stay on the general topic or become another destiny thread. we will see.

i honestly dont know if i ever fell into hype. i guess i would remember that. i usually try to get many opinions on games before i buy them. today it is easier than in the past with all those let's plays. i dont like let's plays but thats one thing they are good for

I'll be totally honest here. I am no fan of shooters in general, and I usually don't care about their existence. However, I recently read some stuff in general about Destiny and watched a few videos. And... I really don't see what makes this game so great. I just don't understand how this is the next biggest thing when it looks mostly like most other shooters in the genre. Does it have anything interesting or unique going for it?

It is a MMO shooter from a studio that knows how to make good Shooters. I want to play it but not enough to buy a new system for it. From what I have heard it is good but it seems too much like Borderlands for me. (I like Borderlands but I am not going to buy another Borderlands like game until I finish Borderlands 2)

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I think it's more because it's an actual new game by the Halo guys more than anything. It does some cool and creative things (gameplay-wise) worth talking about but it definitely isn't the most interesting thing going on, even in its genre.

Play it. Because many people said this before the Alpha/Beta and then changed their minds.

It's for sure a solid FPS (mechanics feel Halo-ish), wrapped around an amazing presentation......it remains to be seen just how good this title is in consideration of the amount of content, but it beats out Watch Dogs IMO (the latter still being a good game).

Just don't expect any SMB 64, Half-Life 2, or GTA III epiphany moments.

The new Thief will be forgotten about, but Titanfall will probably live on as a franchise, more or less cementing it in the AAA landscape.

@Blast Good point. For all their hype and day 1 interest, no one seems to remember them half a year later. But what does that say about game development in general ? A huge amount of the games budget was put into marketing, so we can assume, the game could have been better / more fleshed out / bigger if that money was used in development.
Why has it shifted so much towards making mediocre games and selling them though hype instead of making excellent and outstanding games that basically sell themselfes ?

Thats the point that interests me the most about this. Destiny had the same effect that propelled Mighty No.9 forward: It was made by a dev, who created one of the most desired franchises today. As much as some people dislike it, there is no denying that halo is both extremely famous and beloved.
In my opinion, thats marketing in and of itself, and the devs must have known that.
So why go the extra mile and praise it as "a true next gen shooter" when it is more of the same just improved slightly ? Its neither the definitive next gen game nor is it revolutiobary in any way shape of form. So anyone really expecting what the box alone promises is bound to be disappointed.

Why isnt "by the guys who made halo" enough ? Why must it be elevated to standard, it cant possibly hold ?

I know some people that did enjoy the Beta but aren't enjoying the full game. I hear the GamePlay and graphics are nice but overall it is pretty lacking.

Big Western AAA games tend to advertise themselves like crazy to build hype... then they disappoint a good number of people. Those games don't have longevity Its sad to say but I bet even the huge hype for Destiny will die in 5-6 months even when Bungie gives more content. Only the hardcore players will remain for that game.

@DefHalan Yup, thats what ive heard too. The mindset is a different one. When playing a Beta, you can convince yourself that the shortcommings arent half bad because it IS still a beta. But when this comes up on the full release too, there is no excuse to be had.
Many people ive talked to feel that way. They are just underwhelmed, even though the game itself isnt even half bad.

I kinda think this is part of Nintendo's problem currently. They aren't over-hyping their games. I am normally blown away by the amount of content crammed in Nintendo games because they don't hype it as much as others. Nintendo's problem is under-hype, the rest of the industry seems to over-hype (but over-hyping a game gets them more sales where under-hyping a game gets more memorable experiences)
