Topic: How Hype can kill games

This is why I almost always laugh and roll my eyes whenever I hear a big Western AAA game bragging about how well it sold on its launch day. I'm like, "Hahah shut up! You're selling well because of huge hype and massive advertising! Not because the game is actually even good!"

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I kinda think this is part of Nintendo's problem currently. They aren't over-hyping their games. I am normally blown away by the amount of content crammed in Nintendo games because they don't hype it as much as others. Nintendo's problem is under-hype, the rest of the industry seems to over-hype (but over-hyping a game gets them more sales where under-hyping a game gets more memorable experiences)

That's why certain Nintendo games become hidden gems. Look at Bayonetta 2. Its almost destined to become a gem even though advertising for it has been well... its nothing compared to the huge hype other games get. Look at Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze. Another hidden gem. Amazing game... that didn't get the sales it deserved either.

I don't think sequels to two of the highest rated games of the last generation can really be considered hidden gems. (I had heard of Bayonetta before I knew anything about it so it wasn't hidden at all).

Hidden Gems I would say is more like Sin & Punishment 2 / KI : Uprising.

I am never really blown away by the amount of content in Nintendo games. (With the exception of e.g Smash Bros Brawl or 3D World).

NSMBU / Tropical Freeze / Mario Kart 8 I would say the amount of content is outright disappointing.

I kinda feel the "lets hate on the big bad non-Nintendo AAA title" vibe coming from this thread.

@DiscoGentleman

i dont understand why people preorder games. i think i have done that like 1 or 2 times in my entire life. and it was for games that could have sold out on day 1, so i wanted to be sure that i get them.

I think that happens a lot when talking about non-Nintendo games on a Nintendo site lol

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@sub12 Well, my initial post wasnt directed at the game itself but rather at the publishers overhyping their own prducts, creating expectations that can never be met.
If Nintendo would have done such a thing, that would be directed to them aswell.
I can only speak for myself, but in this case, i dont care about the game in general, just about the case of its obscene hype and the disappointed reactions from fans after its release.
Like i said earlier, the game may actually pretty good, even watch dogs wasnt half bad, but they simply werent what the marketing said they are going to be. And people dont leanr from this, they are falling for the hype time and time again. Thats what my initial post was about
Just interested in peoples opinion about said publisher tactic.

Well maybe they should stop being annoying?

I actually have rarely had a problem with AAA games (the ones I've played) but their ridicule and hatred is frequently deserved, mainly in the last few years.

It's the truth, haha. Honestly, I usually just on get on board with the "AAA Hate" because a lot (over half IMO) are bloated (WAY too much) by hype to get people to buy a ten-hour campaign for $60, with a four-hour add-on at around $15. REALLY not a fan of that BS. I don't think I've played any AAA games I hated, but high-hype, high price, low fun/time factor usually equates to some form of rage. That said, Nitnendo games can just as easily be killed by hype. I won't touch handheld Zelda games anymore because I'm always disappointed after hearing people talk about how AMAZING they are (Better than WW, TP, and SS!!!!!!111) and then just being so grossly disappointed because every one I've played feels watered down compared to coonsole counterparts. D: TF was was killed a little by hype for me too. Grreat game...just not THAT amazing.

Hype management. Either your game gets hype, or you're developing for mobile. Or you're Nintendo.

Controlling hype is necessary as it can kill games. The so-called "next-gen" experience on PS4/XB1 has shown that a fair amount so far. Watch_Dogs, Destiny, and Titanfall were all touted as the "go-to games for the next-gen experience". That's far from what they are.

A while back I was concerned that Smash Bros would fall victim to the same thing - it's hype is far bigger than Destiny's ever was. Thankfully though, that doesn't seem to be the case as we actually know a lot of info already, so we know what we are getting (3DS version at least). Plus, it's Smash Bros.

The problem is were early on in a cycle of consoles, and it's likely they'll be less games this cycle in total than the last due to development costs and studios going out of business- but we still need that game for the XB1, PS4, and maybe even the Wii U that is the 'system seller'. Big hitters like Halo 5, Arkham Knight, Uncharted and Zelda are still off in the distance. So any new IP that were unfamiliar of becomes 'the hope of a generation' by default, frankly because all the traditional franchises have barely changed since the last consoles. Personally I think graphics, online connectivity, game map size, and game length can't be stretched ay further because of either technology or just the customer's attention span. All that leaves as the big selling point is story- this is why the Last Of Us was deemed to be revolutionary- the game mechanics weren't all that different to any other 3rd person sandbox/shooter, but the story was different and well told.

The game to be hyped for is the story that hasn't been told yet.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Well the three games you have on top can't be next gen darlings by the simple fact that each game is on last gen as well. All three games are god, but people should have kept their expectations in check.

Titanfall is fun but killed its self by not having much content even now, the game should have been priced at $30.

Watch_dogs is fun but wears thing quickly once you realize its Assissan's Creed in modern times and the gimmick while fun gets annoying when other players invade your game when your trying to accomlpish something. The game has a ton of content and alot to fo, but the side content really doesn't grab the strengths of the game.

Only a few hours into destiny so I can't really comment on it just yet.

What about Wolfenstein ? I played it on PC and I thought it was pretty good. (And it was backported afterwards - dunno what those ports were like)

Don't see why that is not considered the current game to get.

It happens all the time, Nintendo seem to be as bad as anyone else except they don't appear to spend stupid amounts of money on it:

Super Mario 3D World - great game but nothing special by 3D Mario standards, hype trailers gave away almost every surprise and most reviews denied graphical defects that I thought were pretty obvious
Mario Kart 8 - it's an incredible game, probably my favourite Wii U game and favourite Mario Kart..... but the hype made me expect something that blew every other MK game out of the water. It was only as good in 2014 as MKW was in 2008.
MGS4 - This game bored me and I am a fan of the series. Great gameplay mechanics but the score should have reflected the fact that the cutscenes ruined the game
GTA IV - Again, an incredible game but I felt like the graphics and physics made the game less fun than GTA3
GTA V - Was expecting them to iron out every flaw with the mechanics of GTAIV and make some mythical beast of a game with no framerate judders, no loading times and perfect controls. They didn't so why the perfect score? The hype told me it was perfect, not just the best game ever but perfect!!!

These games weren't killed by hype ( I love them all) but I find it hard to love them like I love other games that were never given the hype they deserved.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
