@Sony_70 The whole problem of games like Borderlands is...its "just" another FPS. What im trying to say is that most western games nowadays are molded after the same checklists. Yes, Borderlands has RPG elements, but still uses the same types of weapons every other shooter uses. An assault gut is the same in every game. Remember the days of, say, the original Turok trilogy ? Where every weapon was truly unique and didnt just shoot faster than the other ? Or look at western RPGs, its almost always the same kinda structure.
Granted, these views are extremely simplyfied and generalized, yes, but the western marked is not that different from the japanese. They have (or had) their JRPGs that mostly followed the same guideline (althoiugh with vastly different aproaches towards combat) and we have our ever same slew of shooters. And they do have a strong indie scene, its just not well known in the west. One of the better known japanese indie series would be something like Touhou. Western developers do the exact same stuff as the japanese, maybe even more so when it comes to "making the same game over and over without innovation" and i dont know what gives western devs the right to bash them.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement above. Look at all the "AAA" games and tell me what's so unique about them

No sympathy. If you act unpleasant and make inflammatory remarks, you're going to get negative attention on the internet.

I still need to play Fez. I almost got it when it was on sale during the Steam Summer Sale, but I decided against it.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

@LzQuacker The only difference between the western and eastern gaming market is mostly the setting and genres, and even that is starting to faint.
Western devs try to make games as "realistic" as possible, while most japanese games try to be as unrealistic as fas as imagination can get. And while the western market thinks that military shooters are the pinnacle of gaming, japanese devs and gamers cherished their RPGs.
Lets compare shooters from the west and east: In the west, it doesnt matter what kind of setting or secondary genre (RPG shooters) you have, the gameplay stays exactly the same - Pistols, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles yadda yadda. Its always the same, sci fi future or historical wars, it doesnt matter. And we inventet such ingenious systems like the "you can only carry 2 weapons" system. Whyle it worked in games like Halo, where weapons where all unique, id doenst matter in other shooters, because the only difference between weapons is how often they go "bang" per second. Remember the days of Turok and / or perfect dark, when you had a whole hangar of weapons with you that all did something completely diferent ? It seems that this isnt cool anymore, i beg to differ though.
And then you have shooters from the east, Vanquish for example. The "Ninja Gaiden" among shooters. Unique fantasy weapons, different enemy types that require different tactics other than how often you have to make your gun go "bang" and lets not forget the abilitys of your character himself.
And nobody could ever tell me why vanquish was less popular than Call of Duty.
And i could go on with western open world (RPG) games always using the same quest assets, dialog tree setup. The only difference there is, like i said, the setting and the story...but i guess that would end up in a small book

A Bit More On Topic: On one hand I do feel a bit sorry for Phil Fish, as the only significant thing that he's ever done (make a charming puzzle-platformer) got him an unfair amount of hate. On the other hand, Fish's continued insults/attacks on specific things and his continued stress over other people's comments about him makes the man seem like he can't take in what he dishes out. If you don't want hate then don't spew it, clean and simple.

did the hate come solely from his game, though? it seemed to come more from the insulting things he's had to say, whether IRL or via social media sites.

i do agree with the 'don't dish it if you can't take it' sentiment. you get what you give, after all.

After all the death threats and hate mail over the years (harassing to release the game), I'd be a little grumpy, too.

Arguably the only reason he was harassed was because he entered his game into the IGF two times. (this shouldn't be allowed but if its possible no harm done). Dude ran his mouth off (which prompted all the harassment) when his product wasn't even ready yet. irrc he told someone to choke on his **** as well as telling Marcus Beer to kill himself.

Your statement also loses the fact that he isn't the only designer who gets tons of hate mail. If fish din't want the attention after IGM he should have took hos twitter private and only corresponded with fans as it pertained to fez. You can't push for a public profile and than not want the attention as well infamy it could bring

Yes, I'm aware he is a little cocky, Shingi. Obviously he has some sort of psychological problems and can't handle small things even when it's mostly his fault.

But that wasn't my point.

If you can't handle media and you're relying on it for your sales, then obviously you're going to have a bad time.

But don't dish it out if you can't take it only applies when both insulters have the same anonymity. Otherwise you're supporting public people to only post soulless PR garbage so that they don't get stalked, etc., which is a bit unfair.

it's one thing to be 'a little grumpy'. it's another to say horrible things about other people and/or products, then cry foul when your paying fanbase (most of which who wind up enjoying some of the things you've insulted) gets on your case about it. it's a situation tailor-made for the world's smallest violin. perhaps an entire 'world's smallest orchestra'.

I think the issue is that Phil Fish made the same stupid mistake about the people insulting him, and fails at understanding the internet.

Is it really a big deal that someone said horrible things about a product? A person, sure, but I disagree with this section of the reply.

If people worked on that product very hard and all you have to say about it is "it sucks", I consider that to be quite rude too.
