Topic: Pay for online gameplay

Lets face it, online gameplay will not be that great if you don't pay for it. It's that simple. Sony tried to make online gameplay free and their network got hacked and was down for MONTHS! Not to mention, it had tons of lag. Now that the players pay for online gameplay it has definitely improved by a lot. If you played online when it was free and you compare it to how it is now then you'll definitely know.

Nintendo need to make us pay online otherwise the online gameplay will ALWAYS contain a lot of lag. There's just no way around it. I specifically want this for SSB4 lol.

When my friends come over to my house and we'd like to relax I don't pull out a laptop and "game." I pull out my Wii so we can play some smash lol.

And that negates his point how?

So you're not playing online when your friends come over...why would you want to pay for online then? And if you're by yourself playing online then it shouldn't be a problem whether you're on a computer or not...

Cuz my friends isn't over 24/7 and when they're not I prefer online gameplay with a ranking system

Mario Kart 8 has surprisingly good online though

Also I doubt Sony getting hacked had anything to do with free or not. Consider the fact that even paid services got hacked before now

One payed for the system, the game, and the wifi. Why charge extra bucks just to use all three at once?

I know I like playing online without having to pay and don't mind the really minor problems I face every once in a while, if it comes down to have paid online in Nintendo platforms I'll hope they do what @shaneoh said and let people make personal dedicated servers.

i haven't experienced any lag with the wii u games that have online functionality, even mk8 runs rather flawlessly and the only time it lags is when my internet drops, and my pc seems to be doing fine as well and that also has free online (yes gotta pay for the Internet Provider obviously) . I used to own a 360 and didn't understand the mentality that pay to play online makes the experience better.. still don't xD

why pay
$300 to 500 for a console
$60 for a game
then have to pay extra to access half of that game and several system features

$50 to $60 a year adds up lol.

also OP you do realize Xbox Live has been hacked numerous times right, and thats a pay to play service~

I wouldn't pay for online YET. Nintendo would have to seriously make it's online services on par with sony and MS for me to consider paying for them.

This sounds like an idea EA will use in the future.

The amount that it really ends up costing for PSN or Xbox Live. (Normally about 33%-50% of its full price) I would be fine with presuming I got something for it. (Like the Rentals they get). I waste absolutely loads more than that in a month usually.

Even for say a 30% discount for downloads it would be totally worth my while to pay.

And really pay to play smash bros online? Do you know much hate nintendo will get if they ever do that. One last thing you don't even have anything to back up your idea, except using lag and hackers in your paragraph lol.

It'll run fine without them requiring a payment. Look at Mario Kart 8 and other games on Wii U that have online, they work fine and they don't charge a dime for the online play. Same thing with the 3DS, I've rarely had problems with playing games online on there and it doesn't charge to play either.

I dislike your use of the word "always." Part of this isn't even Nintendo's fault; it's you server's fault. I've played plenty of online in Mario Kart 8 with literally 0 lag, and I've played countless battles in Kid Icarus: Uprising with or without lag simply because of the people playing. I can play with my friends, who all have good WiFi, and there's no lag whatsoever. If I play with even one laggy person though, it can either mess them up or mess up the entire match, to some extent, at least. Regardless, since the Wii U is so centered around online as it is now and will be increasingly soon, paid for online all of a sudden would be flipping off a bunch of Nintendo's fans who have already paid for the system and multiple games.

Lag happens when someone has a terrible connection and has nothing to do with Nintendo's, honestly your reasons are a bit dumb and the service currently isn't good enough to justify paying for compared to XBL and PSN.
