Nintendo doesn't have enough to offer in terms of online games to ask for $50 a year. Not to mention they couldn't even start to offer free games the way Siny does. Doing this would just make a struggling system struggle more. In the grand scheme, this wouldn't be harmful.
Lag is mainly caused by a bad connection, very rarely on the end of the company. The Sony hacking incidents (there were at least 3) were due to weak security which they barely tried to fix.
Online for MK8 has been great and the only problem I see with it is the matchmaking. Nintendo doesn't need to charge for anything and even if they did, it would be a really hard sell because not enough games use online multiplayer on Wii U
Paid online is the new idiot tax. MS started it when it was a genuinely expensive service to run and was a good USP for their Xbox brand. It is not that expensive to outsource gaming servers in this decade.. Sony copied MS because they needed the money and their fans are becoming the new Apple fans so they knew they'd lap it all up and change their stance on paid online.
The service on MS and Sony is much laggier than on Wii U for both CODs and there is nothing with the depth of control of Wii U Tennis on either PS3/4 or X360/one and there is no lag on that game when both players have decent broadband. This could be because the Wii U network has less strain but MS and Sony can't overcome this problem with all their revenue from subscriptions.
The paid service that MS and Sony fans rave about is only good for the free games. The additional supported games and features are nothing to do with the subscription fee. Sony got hacked because they managed to annoy or attract the attention of a hacking group.
