@Anti-Matter Interesting! I had assumed that the Western names often heard were much like what Koreans tend to do by just adopting a Western name to make it easier to conduct business with Westerners, but it's not actually their name.

@Krull Nah. Fun Fact. Sinead was actually a nun originally. Wish I were joking. But I'm not....

Shawn Colvin! That's the name (I actually nearly saw her in person once for free...but couldn't go ) So it's Shawn, not Sean....close enough.

You can always go for "Patty" and "Cake" and then you can call them home from pay time by yelling "Patty, Cake! Patty, Cake!" as loud as you can!

Sigh. Guess my Switch has been the harbinger of a new defect type.

@Ryu_Niiyama A text wall for your text wall (because that's just how you, me, and thanos roll....)

" Wiiu bombed besides customers are stupid" Yeah...there's that Not that the fate of WiiU hasn't been hashed out a million times. Nintendo's poor marketing and communication, their lack of understanding of Wii failing in its mission and was a fad, not a new frontier fro new gamers, mistakes with Wii carrying over, odd launch lineup, price, etc. Wrong product at the wrong time (the tablet was seen as undesirable since it looked so poor next to the sudden tablet boom) making it misunderstood. Muddled messaging, etc etc. But the big thing that we always gloss over when discussing it is its timing relating to other consoles. When it launched, everyone knew PS4/X720 were inbound. People adopted a wait and see the first year. We assumed a 1 year head start would help WiiU. Instead it made people sit on the fence for year 1 to see what the other 2 would have. Sony announced in Feb. Not long after WiiU release. I think that halted a lot of interest, just long enough to kill momentum and make anti-momentum pull harder in that direction. And then once the other two got close to launch the noise from 80% of the software developers Westerners are used to were pretty clear in saying "we're going PC/X86 only, and only one console doesn't fit that spec." And since ESA surveys make it abundantly clear that graphics are far and wide the #1 purchasing motivator for consumers...well...Wiiu wasn't winning points there either. So year 1 was "lets wait and see what Sony?MS have", followed by "our software isn't coming to WiiU, not enough sales", followed by "Sony/MS have better graphics, all the major games, and WiiU has a tablet that looks 10 years out of date next to the iPad and the 30+ Android clones." I feel like if WiiU were released a year earlier, it's fate would have been different. But it was the wrong product, released too late, and just at terrible timing relative to Sony/MS, but unable to really do anything different from Sony/MS, just a few different games. If I weren't a Nintendo die-hard and went into a store looking at those 3 consoles, lets be fair, who WOULD pick the WiiU? Other than the admittedly good, but sparse exclusives, it didn't really offer an advantage and offered a lot of disadvantages. I love my WiiU and will never get rid of it, BUT, I honestly can't think of it as a major Nintendo platform. For the WiiU years, the heart of Nintendo gaming was solidly on 3DS. All my Nintendo time and most of my gaming time overall went to 3DS. If it weren't for my Splatoon addiction WiiU would have REALLY gone underused, and a number of great 3DS games could have been great on WiiU (Luigi's Mansion 2!) but instead they were 3DS. 2012-2017 were great years for Nintendo gaming....just...not on WiiU. That was their "B-Side" platform. I loved it when I played it but there was admittedly a fraction of the goodness on it as there was for 3DS. I kind of wished I could combine my 3DS and WiiU into a perfect console. Fortunately that's precisely what Switch is!

"light on Nintendo dev'd releases"
Yes. What Nintendo backlog do you have from 2018? I have a backlog but it's all 2017 stuff and third party. SWITCH is just fine with good releases, certainly, but a lot of the great stuff for 2018 is really from third parties. It's not a terrible problem to have for once, but it does show that Nintendo's classic bottleneck of development still isn't resolved. They only have a few studios with relatively thin in-house staff, and they haven't got HD development under control yet. Heck Ubisoft has something like 15 studios worldwide, any 5 of them working on the same blockbuster at once and they can't even get a working game out the door. I feel for Nintendo. But for their platform, that's an issue. From Nintendo, I might be missing one or two things but we've got for 2018 (so far):
Kirby Star Allies
Bayonetta (WiiU port)
DKC:TF (WiiU port)
Sushi Striker
Mario Tennis Aces
Yoshi
Fire Emblem
Smash (WiiU/3DS port?)
Capt. Toad (WiiU port)
(Other things we don't know about yet?)

Kirby....that is not their finest hour (my opinion.) It feels like a fraction of the game Robobot was. I think they focused on making it the Triforce Heroes of Kirby, which is cool...but it falls flat. The campaign is incredibly short without much need to hunt for treasure (Robobot had me searching for weeks for all those hidden goodies. Heck the panned Chibi Robo Ziplash had more treasure hunting for all the secrets than Star Allies!) I'm having more fun with the post-game "play as one of the heroes" mode, actually. But the sushi striker demo was a delightful deversion from it. I feel bad saying it, I love Kirby, but while Robobot really moved Kirby forward, Star Allies is a big step back in both content, and pacing. It feels like it was made quickly. And with the 4 characters it COULD have been such a great puzzle platformer.

3 WiiU Ports. One unknown new/old game port. Sushi striker is really fun, though it's hard to call it a "major" release. that leaves for 2018, Tennis, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, maybe Smash if it's not a port, and anything we don't yet know about. I mean it's more games than Microsoft has But it's not a stellar year for Nintendo releases (again, good Switch year, DQB, Ys, Souls, Octopath, etc. etc. But the 3rd party stuff seems bigger than the Nintendo stuff.) Of course they could still drop Pokemon or AC or that rumored SF game is great, and then we flip the other way. It depends if they're holding their cards or already showed them. They say they already showed them, but they trollolol a lot.

The Twins were filled with ports (I'm never buying a Playstation year 1 again. Heck I may just wait until the mid-gen refresh now that I know....) But Year 1 was filled with dual-platform releases as well (the AC's Battlefields, CODs etc.) So it was getting PS3 games on launch day. It depends if a port is a "remaster" though. Even if PS3 and PS4 had full backward compatibility tons of people would rebuy a remastered Uncharted series, etc, anyway to get better visuals. Same with Twilight Princess on WiiU. But there's no real remaster from WiiU to Switch, it's the same game with maybe a few more shaders. A few bonuses to justify the port. If you played the original version there's less reason to rebuy it unless you want it portable. WiiU to Switch ports are just an odd case of "too much of the same" to count them among new releases. Which is fine. I understand why the game would be ported, and agree it should be. But when most of your calendar year of releases is just re-releases, like a Nintendo Selects, of games from the previous 5 years, that's still a thin year. All new games for people who never bought a WiiU, all re-releases for people who did. I bought a PS4 day one. I know how sucky those years are. Even WiiU got more playtime than PS4 year one.

@nintendolife Uhm, guys what's with the Capatcha? Please do not make us select 300 pictures of cars and street signs every time we post. Sony making me do that is painful enough!

It's custom for Thai's to be given nicknames at birth which usually sticks throughout their life. Usually these are short 3 or 4 letter names instead of their long traditional Thai names. Nok ,Noi and Mai are the most common names I've come across but I also know a Cake,Beer and Party. I once dated a girl called Game, who was named as so because her parents liked to play games. It couldn't have been a more fitting name as that's what she liked to do to me too, play silly games but not of the entertainment kind.

I met a Thai girl named Porn once. Foreelz.

@antdickens Well that's even WEIRDER then. I went to post and an odd white page popped up with, I can't remember the text exactly but something on the order of "verification required to continue to NintendoLife" after I hit the "post reply" button. It was the annoying Google Re-Capatcha that Playstation Store uses of "I am not a robot", "select all the busses" "select all the pictures of street signs" etc. Never seen it before at NL, of course, and assumed it was some new intrusive security policy in place. We'll see if this one goes through. Just a web server glitch I guess?

Edit: This one went through ok....maybe a future session after I next log in it will prompt me again but for now it's no longer doing it.

@YummyHappyPills Madden? Wow, that's the first Madden to miss a console since....wait....has Madden ever been on a Nintendo console? Let's face it, it's a game only for the US. They could just make it XBox exclusive and the world would be right.

Nintendo is all about international appeal, and FIFA has way more international appeal. And FIFA has a custom engine (that Madden doesn't), and is getting the Cup related content. I dont' think we'll ever see a single Frostbyte game though. Which is most of them from EA.

NEStalgia

Haruki_NLI

@NEStalgia EA's developers have come out and said no one tried getting Frostbite on there so...you know. Clearly a drive.

@YummyHappyPills Yeah. Well, you have to keep in mind who EA is right now and what their business priorities are. Ubisoft too, to a point, though Ubi's kind of special. EA..100% of everything they do is now online. Every game requires a login and active connection. Most of their games are now online services...effectively all of their games. They make games for an always wired, always connected, always online cloud driven ecosystem that may or may not be tied to credit cards along with endless microtransactions.

If that were your business, would you be making games for a hybrid handheld without a mandatory 4G data plan and built in GSM radio? Nope.

Lets face it, legacy content like Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect etc aside, EA has left us. Not just Nintendo, but most of our sense of what a game is and how it should be distributed. It's not about "we don't see sales on Nintendo worthwhile enough to spend money on the engine" alone for them. It's also "our entire business model is completely incompatible with the nature of the hardware and its average customer."

Of course in 2018 I can't figure out just who EA's customer actually is that's always at home with high end equipment and unlimited time for neverending games. But somehow they seem to find them in quantity.

Ubi's been moving in the same direction but they fortunately still make some "normal" stuff for now and the Guillemot's have a personal love of Nintendo that lets them not ignore it entirely. If Vivendi ever leverages them out, kiss Ubi goodbye too. Games now rely on the cable TV model for the big companies.

HEY! Leave me out of it, I ain't got no Switch so I don't belong in this topic...

P.S.

It's a Captcha code, not capatcha...

what you saw, was probably this:
https://s9.postimg.cc/s2c0qvegv/Captcha_page.png
Also take note on what it says on the title bar/tab of the page you're on, when this happens. Almost always it will say something like "Attention Required! | Cloudflare". Cloudflare provides content delivery network services, Internet security and distributed domain name server services, sitting between the visitor and the Cloudflare user's hosting provider, acting as a reverse proxy for websites. That might also be how the redirect happens, but my knowledge on that specific topic doesn't go that far. But perhaps @antdickens can.

He's been tinkering away at the site ever since yesterday, helping out several people, including myself, who came across some issues ever since they updated the privacy policy and implemented changes.

It can happen on any site, although it doesn't happen very often. If you ask me, it's some kind of attempt at hi-jacking or a half-backed attempt at redirecting addresses to other sites to block the original address for whatever reason. But most of the times, the problem vanishes pretty quickly.

@Oorwullie @gcunit I've always been convinced that I was going to have twin boys, and inspired as I am by your off-topic conversation in this thread, I've decided that if it ever happens, and if they're even half as cheeky and wrecking ball-like as their dad, I'm going to nickname them Assault & Battery...

I just saw someone rolling with a splattershot in Splatoon 2.

Aaaanyway, I've played Sushi Striker demo, and it's surprisingly a good game. The RPG elements are well implemented and the story and the animations are well done. This demo is the best that I have tried. It gave you a full tutorial on how to play the game, and it even provided stages for you to apply what you've learned, and get to learn advanced tips beforehand. I may buy it but I'll wait until the reviews come in.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

@IceClimbers @YummyHappyPills What’s so bad about the Splattershot in Splatoon 2? I’ve played Splatoon 1 on Wii U a lot and Splattershot is a pretty dependable weapon in it. Did it get worse in Splatoon 2?

IceClimbers

@YummyHappyPills Nope.

@shadow-wolf Nothing's wrong with it. I'm saying I saw someone rolling with it, which is a feature that you can only do with dualies. In other words, I saw a hacker/cheater.
