Gungeonite

Hello and welcome fans of the Rogue-Lite/Like!

There are a couple of really good games of the genre already on Switch, so let's discuss:

  • What's your favorite so far?
  • Any games of the genre on other systems you've played that you'd like to see on Switch?
  • Any particular game you're looking forward to?
  • Any fantastic or dreadful run you want to share?
  • Anything about Rogue-Lites/Likes is welcome here...

To start things off, my favorite - as you might have guessed from my name and profile picture - is Enter the Gungeon. The one I'm looking forward to the most right now is Wizard of Legend. I have to wait a week or two before I'm able to buy it and the wait is nigh unbearable because it looks so good!

My favorite on Switch right now is Wizard of Legend because it's the only one that interest me, and boy does it deliver! No regrets in buying it immediately, and I'm loving it. Still trying to get past 2nd boss hahah.

The ones I'm looking forward is definitely Moonlighter and Dead Cells!

Q3 and then August... it'll be packed especially with the retail titles I'm interested in

So much replaybility and I pretty much feel accomplished whenever I managed to kill a boss XD

Thank you Moonlighter to make me interested in this difficult genre!

@Gungeonite I've always liked roguelikes. I've had Nethack on every PC I've ever owned. So far on Switch I only have Binding of Isaac. I like it but not as much as Nethack, I think because it's real-time and actiony rather than turn-based. Yeah, I'm one of tbose weirdos who like turn-based games.

BOI's art style is also kind of a turnoff. Not because it's "gross" - I actually like gross stuff, I'm a huge horror geek - but it's just kind of dreary and monotonous.

Still, BOI is a pretty cool game, and I've been meaning to get Enter the Gungeon for quite some time. Heard a lot of good things about it. But it always seems like there's another game I need more. I'll get to it eventually though.

I would like to see a return to the turn-based roguelikes of days past. I haven't seen a new one of those in ages. Last ones I can remember playing were Shiren the Wanderer and Izuna (which was actually roguelite) on the DS. Those were both pretty good if you like the genre.

I'll be watching this thread to see if anything else is coming out!

I have 4 on Switch and each one is very different and great in it's own way.

Steredenn: Binary Stars
Enter the Gungeon
Sky Rogue
Rogue Aces

I'd highly recommend all 4.

Wizard of Legend is #2 on the Best Sellers list in US eshop! I'm so glad that this game got propelled up there ^^

Needs more content and more level layout and more bosses (?), but so far the dev team has one lined up, as well as more bug squishing, so I'm happy >:] Really glad I purchased this immediately.

@KaiserGX And that should be quite popular, it's on #5 too in eshop. I have been hearing good things about Death Road to Canada but still not sure whether to take a plunge, $12 is kinda steep for something I'm not sure I like.

Death Road is fun, I enjoy it...it's basically part Orgeon Trail and part "arcade beat-em up" with zombies...or something. lol

It also has tons of humor and references.
EDIT: I don't usually post my own videos on here as much anymore, but I might as well post this one.

Undead_terror

A doom like FPS with randomly generated dungeons, random perks (even stuff to miss with you) and weapons. You can get gold to upgrade your character and what not, it's definitely one of my fav eshop games of the year if it's not my most fav atm.

@darkfenrir
Both Moonlighter and Dead Cells look incredible. looking forward to those games as well.
And yeah, Wizard of Legend is doing very well on the eShop it seems. Nice to see!

@JasmineDragon
I'm not a fan of The Binding of Isaac either. I'm aware it's one of those all-time popular games, but its style never did anything for me.
You might want to check out FTL, Into the Breach, Tales of Maj'Eyal, Darkest Dungeon and Quest of Dungeons. The last two are available on Switch but all of those are turn-based, maybe one of them will scratch that itch of yours.

@Undead_terror
Immortal Redneck has caught my attention but I absolutely suck at FPS games. Not sure it would be wise for me to take the dip.

Gungeonite

KaiserGX

@Pahvi Yeah, Quest of Dungeons was kind of boring, idk how it got as popular as it did for that short while. Even though on the surface Yodanji seems like a smaller and cheaper game, I think it has more depth in what you're trying to do over Quest of Dungeons despite each character only having 4 moves and there being a LOT less items.. I feel like I'm more careful in Yodanji. Especially that all the Yokai have different skills that aren't usually just cookie cutter moves.

I would love to try Redneck if I didn't get motion sickness from first person games.

Undead_terror

@Gungeonite As said it's really fun, but it is indead fast paced game, you move pretty quick, and then there is upgrades and perks (bad perks depending on what you think) that make you move faster. then there is stuff to screw with you like remove your aimer and such, and this is all on top of different kinds of enemies that fire at you or charge at you. Best if you watch some gameplay.

I'm new to this genre, but have The Binding of Isaac and Darkest Dungeon to Switch.

BoI is very fun, but haven't got the time to fully explore it yet.

I got Darkest Dungeon this week. It's extremely complex, but I think it's easier to play on the Switch in handheld mode as the touch screen makes going through the detailed menu not as difficult as with the controller.
The complex menu system aside, this seems very satisfying, although hard as hell. But that's part of its charm: it's almost as if you're supposed to die... a lot.

@Pahvi Steredenn is such a brilliant game but you do need to spend a good bit time with it to understand how everything works.Such as what weapons compliment each other and which ones suit your style of play and importantly what powerups to select between bosses. Evey run is very different, some much tougher than others but when you go on a good run it feels very satisfying. Some of the sights you see on the way too are amazing.

I'd recommend using the Fortress ship ,it's easy to unlock if you haven't already. It's slower and weaker than the others but it's got a great special which can be powered up plus it can take a lot of hits, especially if you choose to increase health after defeating a boss.

I made a little compilation of clips using the Switch video capture and then a video editor. It's action packed ,has amazing scenery and come out rather well I think, albeit at 30fps instead of 60fps

Warning ,some potential spoilers inside

@Gungeonite I knew I was forgetting one game I wanted to buy, and Darkest Dungeon is it. I'm a sucker for Lovecraftian horror and turn-based games, this should be right up my alley.

Rogue likes/lites are my favourite genre, I bought my switch purely for BOI afterbirth (seriously)

Theres so many cracking ones out there already for switch, my top 5 favourites so far:

  • Binding of isaac
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Flinthook
  • Immortal Redneck
  • Crypt Of The Necrodancer

Also really loving Neon Chrome, Darkest Dungeon and Steredenn. Would love to see Ziggurat come over to the switch, or maybe even tower of guns, FPS rogues are awesome.

Side note: has anyone else noticed a problem in immortal redneck with the left joycon frequently jolting the player to either side? Its like the deadzone is super tight...
