Just not fun to me:
Arms.
Every Neo Geo fighting game. Splatoon/multiplayer focused shooters.
I am Setsuna/JRPGs.
Serious sports games. Bethesda's Doom.
Blossom Tales.
Shantae and Metroidvanias.
Super Meatboy/Endless runners.
Celeste/near impossible platformers. Snipperclips and puzzle games.

I see people are dismissing whole genres here, rather than games/series! I don't understand how anyone could dislike Metroidvanias or (gasp!) Zelda, although I respect that some people do. Personally, I love sports games, RPGs of all kinds, Metroidvanias... I thought my GTA fatigue might get a rise out of someone, though.

I just thought of another massively popular game I have no interest in (as well as Minecraft, which seems to be the consensus choice here): Hearthstone. I'm aware it's supposedly brilliant and deep, but meh. Zero interest.

Metroid Prime, Neat atmosphere, but I don't find the gameplay engaging.

As this is in the Switch forum, I'll try to keep this to Switch games.

  • Splatoon 2 - I like the concept and aesthetics for this series, but at the end of the day I'm just not into shooters and multiplayer focused games.
  • ARMS - Another attractive game with its own ideas, but most fighting games barring Smash and the occasional Street Fighter session just don't appeal to me long-term.
  • Binding of Issac - Like others, I'm just not into this game's aesthetics and genre.
  • Sonic - I've tried a couple of Sonic games and just can't get into the series. They weren't bad games, they just didn't wow me.
  • Celeste - Part of me still wants to try this one, but I play games to relax. Some challenge is fine, but I shouldn't have to struggle with not chucking my controller across the room.
  • Dark Souls - Same as Celeste.
  • Minecraft - While I understand the appeal of this game, it's way too open-ended and sandbox-y for me. I need a game with at least a loose goal of sorts, or else I don't feel like I'm making any progress. Also, I'm not usually a graphics whiner, but the game is a little too blocky for my tastes.
  • Any sports game - Other than a bit of baseball, I don't keep track of or care for sports. Why simulate what you can easily watch online or on television?

Minecraft. Just not my thing.

Any RTS game. If I want to try to keep track of and micromanage 80 things at once, I’ll just go to work. I play games to relax. xD

Halo is overrated. It’s not terrible, but it’s not nearly as good as some people would have you believe.

Now about Splatoon 2:

When I first bought my Switch, I didn’t get Splatoon 2 because I didn’t think I’d like it. I was used to “adult” FPS and TPS games like Call of Duty and Gears of War.

I was an IDIOT. Splatoon 2 is freaking AWESOME. 😁

ARMS

Tried to work up some excitement to buy it, but knew I would end up regretting the purchase and/or forcing myself to play it just to feel like I got my money's worth. So I skipped it.

To a lesser degree, Splatoon. I bought it and I do play it from time to time, but it never devoured my life.

The biggest issue with ARMS is that someone can rage-quit and deny you credit for the win. This should never, ever, ever be an acceptable mechanic.

If someone forfeits, you win. Common sense. It’s mind-boggling to me that this wasn’t implemented.

@Moroboshi876 On Switch? Nintendo Labo and Skyrim. Labo I find impressive creatively, I just have no interest. And Skyrim even I don't understand why. I generally love RPGs and open world games and even other games from Bethesda like the Fallout series. But I just can't get into it.

For other platforms. Fortnite and PUBG. I just don't see the appeal. I wont turn this comment into an essay about what I don't like about them - lets just say there are a lot of things they do, that many people either tolerate, or like, that I dislike and even consider bad for the industry as a whole.

Kirby Star Allies doesn't look promising to me at all. When it comes to Kirby, I tend to love the quirky offshoots like Canvas Curse, Block Ball and Mass Attack, but the mainline platformers tend to feel recycled and unrewarding to play. I might give Star Allies a go if I ever find a cheap pawnshop copy or something, but I'll pass otherwise.

I don't care about most of the third-party stuff either, like DOOM or Rocket League. I might play L.A. Noire at some point though.

@Tyranexx I have the exact same issue with Minecraft, which I haven't tried, but I don't need to. If it got some story... well, that would be different. And that's Dragon Quest Builders. Give it a try, and in this case you have a demo available.

@Moroboshi876: Well, I do like the RPG series it stems from, so maybe I will! I need to get a Switch first, though.

Minecraft, definitely. I like something a bit more story-driven...I'm not really good at making my own fun in games!

On that note, I really don't see the appeal of Stardew Valley (it's probably my least favourite of 30+ Switch purchases). Nothing in that game really motivated me to move forward. Which is strange because I'm quite into Animal Crossing.

@Buizel I decided to give Stardew Valley a try, although I need story-driven games too -even Super Mario Maker I haven't played for years-, and in my case I really loved it. It's a time sink, and that bothers me, but once I started to earn a little more money and was able to buy better things the game got a lot more interesting. But the first 10 hours can be boring for people like us, I know.

@Moroboshi876 Maybe there is something I can enjoy there, but if I have to wait 10+ hours I'm not sure it's worth it for me, unfortunately. I have enough games in my backlog.

Moroboshi876

@Buizel I understand. Backlog is awful, mine too. I have hundreds of unfinished (unsealed even) games for dozens of systems. On Switch I decided to spend one full week with each game in order to see some progress instead of playing a different one every day, because I need some focus while not abandoning any of them.

But even this way (or maybe because of this) I've not played Super Mario Odyssey for weeks now. And it's stressful.

Any single player first person shooter. Competitive shooters and especially colourful ones that take place in large open arenas? Sure, no problem. But by definition a story driven game has you walking around and not necessarily knowing which way you're going. Often down closed, dark corridors and it just makes me feel motion sick.

Arms for me. Played it at EGX... Beaten by the wife... Never again... hahaha!!

I couldn't get to grips with the controls, the moving, dodging, punching just didn't seem fluid, not sure what it's like as a normal controller and not movement style, might be better, but the movement style of actually swinging etc, not for me.

I was the opposite! I had little interest in Arms when it was first announced. But the moment I played it at the Switch preview event in London I loved it!

@SuperJoon That was my exact issue with the Global Test Punch last Summer. A deal breaker for me.
