If they add more guest characters, then I wonder who they'll be. I think the Inklings are a good choice!

I am interested to know whether the idea of releasing Mario Kart 8 on the Switch even if it has added features, would effect sales when the 9th game in the series finally releases?

@FragRed I'm thinking that if the NS version is an updated port of 8, that we won't see a MK9 on the Switch.

@Octane Could be a long time to wait for a properly new Mario Kart if that was the case. Given the popularity/sales of MKDS, MKWii, MK7 and MK8, I find that unlikely. Assuming Switch is significantly more powerful than Wii U, they're gonna wanna put out a sparkly new Mario Kart at some point, not just rely on what'll effectively be a port of a 3 year old game.

Breath of the Wild looks similar on Switch to Wii U because it started as a Wii U game, and because Nintendo don't need to make it look significantly better - it being a brand new Zelda will be enough. Mario Kart 8.5 won't have that newness.

Even if the new Mario Kart is an updated port of 8, I think Nintendo would make a Mario Kart 9 on the Switch. It's one of their best sellers, so not making a new entry for it would be a terrible decision.

@gcunit That's two Mario Karts, two Splatoons (two Smash Bros.?) on one system. Nintendo has never done that before, releasing two games has the potential to split the userbase. Maybe they're just going to update the current games throughout the lifespan of the Switch? That would make more sense I think.

I'm still thinking the new Splatoon might be a sequel rather than an updated port.

Mario Kart 8 is probably the best Mario Kart game ever (apart from the battle mode) and it couldn't reach as many people as it should with being on Wii U.
In contrast: Mario Kart Wii sold 30million units (and it wasn't a very good Mario Kart game imo).

There's not much to improve on the MK8 engine, and the graphics are still some of the best on any console. It is Wii U's best seller for a reason.

So I'm fine if they reuse old assets but polish them up with the power of the Switch, maybe having 4 player splitscreen without graphic and framerate sacrifices.

I can see Mario Kart 9 reusing all the cups and tracks and characters, and vehicles from Mario Kart 8, but adding enough to make it a worthy sequel.

At least:
6 new cups (24 new tracks),
8 new characters (incl. favourites such as King Boo, Diddy Kong, R.O.B., Kamek, Bowser Jr., Petey Piranha),
a new gameplay addition (2x Item-Switch),
4 good battle arenas
all-around graphic polish (to make 4-player splitscreen just as smooth as if you were playing solo)

@Octane I'm not talking about Smash or Splatoon, only Mario Kart. If they're porting MK8, I'm sure a new Mario Kart will come within about 3 years. It's their biggest IP alongside Pokémon.

I'm just wondering how long it'll be before Nintendo gives us more information on the Switch.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Mario Kart 9 justs needs to be more of Mario Kart 8 (while also playing like a distinct Mario Kart game) with a Double Dash mode thrown in.
Instant day one buy. Even without a Doubel Dash mode.

God first.

Oh, and by Double Dash mode I mean the actual "two racers in one kart" kind of thing, not just the ability to hold two items.

I think it'll have at least one DLCs worth of new tracks. Heck, maybe 2 (16 tracks) with how long they've waited.

Imagine a Metroid Prime track!

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

TheLegendOfLaser

A Metroid Prime track would be great, I'm also hoping we get a course based on Inkopolis.

My wishlist:

1. All tracks (+DLC) from MK8.
2. An additional two new cups (would say four totalling 16 but I think that is unlikely).
3. New characters
4. A proper battle mode. Have 4 nostalgia maps and 4 new maps.
5. Alongside two-items, option to play in double dash mode.
6. Specialised items for characters. Might give a little more balance to online play if certain under-used characters get pretty useful, exclusive weapons

Probably unlikely to have all of them, but I'd say new tracks and special tracks for battle mode are must haves imo. Whilst I'd still buy the game, I'd feel a little short changed if it pretty much was what I'd bought before but now with the option to hold two items + new characters.

Having double karts seem like too much work, as they would have to rebuild all the models in order to fit two characters on a kart.
It would be nice if you could stack items and for example if you got two red shells, they could be combined into one big-ass shell like in Double Dash. I can't remember what game had this, but there was a futuristic racer (probably not a big game) in which you could collect pickups that would stack on themselves and give you more powerful versions.

@adamkop I'm certain you're not thinking of this but Lego Racers had that mechanic, collecting white bricks increased the power of the coloured brick so like a red brick on its own is a cannonball but a red brick and 3 white bricks is homing rockets.

Or they release this as it's own thing but basically an updated version of 8. Whether it has all the same tracks or some different collection of tracks. And then instead of Mario Kart 9 they just keep supporting the existing game with ongoing DLC. Better for us in terms of content and better for them in terms of margin.

Grumblevolcano

@skywake Yeah, same with Smash. Start off with all the content of the Wii U version (maybe include the 3DS content for Smash too) and then you'd be able to have your DLC focus on what the Wii U version was missing (e.g. Wolf, Ice Climbers, Inklings).
