Topic: ¿Do you think we will get another 2D Metroid Remake?

Now that Metroid II The Return of Samus gets its much needed remake; i believe Nintendo should remake its sequel Super Metroid.

MercurySteam has now proven they can make decent 2D old school games with their work on a CastleVania game and the upcoming Metroid II Samus Returns.
I would prefer Samus Returns be in HD on Switch rather than Vaseline graphics on 3DS, but at this point I am very thankful we are getting what we get. A day 1 purchase for me no doubt.

And with Nintendo waking up Metroid from the dead with Prime 4, I believe the series is needing this remake in addition to make Metroid Great Again.
Just like when Prime 1 was released over 15 years ago we were blessed with it including NES Metroid and a dual release of Metroid Fusion (Metroid 4) the same day; One would hope that such another miracle like that could happen. Especially with a new younger generation of Nintendo fans that deserve to play these classics in a new remaked HD fashion for Switch.

What do you think? Could we possibly get another Metroid Remake?

I do feel like Super Metroid could use a remake, it's not perfect like so many people like to claim, but remaking Super Metroid this soon after Samus Returns feels too soon. Maybe about 5 years from now on Switch.

5 years is a ridiculous amount of time in between games when you see other nintendo franchises like kirby, Mario and Pokemon get yearly releases. A 5 year window will just help make Metroid a dead franchise once again.

5 year gap, not between games, between remakes. Maybe just 3 years. To let them polish the engine for the switch.

Regardless the more Metroid the better.

I'd argue Super Metroid is a perfect game...for what it is. Or at least, it's one of the most flawless games out there. That doesn't make it inherently the "best", especially in an imo way. Prime 1 is probably at least slightly more flawed but I like it more, and it's a longer game.

If they do remake it though, I hope it either makes a good chunk of changes (I'd argue a Prime style remake of it might be cool) or it should be literally the same game but with better graphics.

The biggest problem with Super Metroid is the run button. On one hand the ability to run allows for really great momentum-based movement not unlike Sonic, but on the other hand it makes the controls feel very cramped when you're charging your beam, running, and jumping at the same time. It's to a point where not even AM2R, a fangame made by really dedicated fans, decided to bring that back because Fusion/Zero Mission were great enough games without a run button in the first place.

That said, the Joy-Cons/Pro Controller can completely fix that problem by simply mapping the run button to pressing in the left stick or ZL. (And to be fair so would a Virtual Console rerelease as well)

I wouldn't say no to an HD remake of Super Metroid, but I'd prefer the sequel after Fusion above all else. It's one of those things I want to know what happens, like the 1999 battle in Castlevania.

I don't think it will. Given before being assigned to Samus Returns, MercurySteam wanted to do a Fusion remake. I think if Samus Returns is successful either they'll be able to the Fusion remake they wanted to do or a completely new game (of course if Samus Returns isn't successful then 2D Metroid is dead).

So I think Nintendo will instead have Super Metroid be Classic Game Collection fodder around 2019. "If you want Super Metroid on your Switch, you'll have to buy the online subscription." type deal.

I feel like at this point it will be done at some point, simply because popular Nintendo games eventually get remakes. I really think that Metroid AND Fire Emblem are both now just gonna follow the Pokemon formula where the games will just keep getting remade in the order of their release dates.

I'd almost bet money that FE3 remake, D/P/P remake and Super Metroid remake will ALL be on the Switch. Maybe Mario Sunshine and Skyward Sword too, which vaguely follow similar pattern (as every non-Land Mario platformer and every 3D Zelda before them have been remade, with the last remake being the newest game in the series remade).

Though not Kirby. They remade Adventure and Superstar (which both contained DL1 remakes :V), but they're not gonna do DL2/3 remakes.

Also, someday they will remake the original Animal Crossing, I'm certain.

I don't think they will remake Super Metroid; the game doesn't need one.

What @Meowpheel said. We're already getting Prime 4 within the next year or two. Going from Samus Returns in 2017 -> Prime 4 in 2018/2019 -> Super Metroid remake in 2022 is a fairly reasonable gap.

Or they could just remove the run button. You only used it for what, one room in Brinstar?

Also, as far as changes, Maridia desperately needs a design overhaul. It's so painfully linear and there's really not much in the way of actual missions except defeating Draygon. There really needs to be a completely overhaul in the design so it's not just one long path leading to Draygon and they should add more powerups to unlock in extra missions. Spider Ball would make a nice addition to that area.

@Bolt_Strike Without exploiting glitches like the Machball [Mockball?] (which would have bumped up the number to three rooms - the room leading to a Super Missile expansion and a Reserve Tank and the room leading to the Ice Beam in Norfair), yeah only the Brinstar bridge right before the red soil part. They were only used to run across crumbling blocks, but they also served a different purpose in helping you jump higher if you had a running start and etc.

That said, in the end I would agree with the removal of the run button overall, but for a Super Metroid remake, just outright omitting it would be a bit questionable to some. I don't know how many people liked the run button, and it would probably remove something cool about Super Metroid, mainly from its physics-based movement.

Really? Do pray tell us what's not perfect about Super Metroid? I'd argue that it is near perfect. Of course a remake could add updated graphics and maybe expand it a little but it's arguably the greatest game ever made, certainly for its time and the hardware limitations. It's as great today as it was nearly 25 years ago.

Super Metroid is legit right up there with like Portal or Shovel Knight's original campaign as games I can't find a single notable issue with. Parts where maybe I would like more if they did X (X as in a variable, not the enemies from Fusion :V) but nothing I thought was bad or mediocre really.

@kkslider5552000 Maybe if the Switch's lifespan is a Xbox 360 type length there'll be a FE3 remake on there but with a normal lifespan I'm thinking only FE4-6 will get a remake on Switch at the most (FE6 at the least).

I seriously doubt they remake any FF for Switch. That is Square we are talking about...
The XV director was joking around just the other day about XV on Switch. I wouldnt hold your breath on anything like that for Switch. Maybe another Square Indie like the I Am sesuna new game that dev is making and project Octopus. Theres your square games on Switch.

On topic: Super Metroid is an old game. A masterpiece? Yes of course.. but it could use a remake more so than Fusion and Metroid 1 already has Zero Mission. And also, continue the series with Super to follow Samus Returns.

Another thing, I didn't like how when you went down to Lower Brinstar to reach Norfair you were stuck there for a few missions. It'd have been better if they'd have put the Ice Beam where the Spazer is and you could get it at any point and leave.
