I think it's time indie went out of style. I tried getting into it, but it can't hold my interest for very long. It's boring and emotionless.
I say it's time for a classic rock revival. It's already begun to an extent with the garage rock revival (White Stripes, Jet, etc). Hopefully, post-punk will die and the real music will come back.

There's never any one musical 'fad' - different genres appeal to different pockets of fans, and they all have widespread popularity. Indie's no more likely to go drop of style anytime soon than rock, R&B, or the ever-indestructible pop. The only genres that tend to drop in and out of style are the 'extreme' ones that you'll either love or despise, and (I'll admit I haven't listened to a great deal of it) I don't think indie is particularly extreme.

Indie is just another genre, which happens to have less followers than "classic rock." Actually, it's a sub-section of rock. I agree with Raylax; I haven't really seen a music "fad", just genres that get more or less popular. That said, vuvuzela fusion jazz would be awesome.
Personally I'm really happy that contemporary jazz artists like Esperanza Spalding have been getting a lot of attention recently. My inner music elitist rests easy due to the fact that contemporary jazz has too much authenticity and complexity to ever become a mass market-appealing fad.
...and why do you want it to go out of style? There are dozens of genres / sub-genres of music that I don't listen to, and I have no difficulty avoiding them. Can't you just...y'know...not listen to the stuff you don't like?

And listen to the stuff you do.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
As far as the next "Big thing" on the radio, I hope all the utter crap they're playing now will go away and some good people will come in. Doesn't matter what genre, they just have to be good. Given the last ten years, nobody good appears to be gaining popularity, so I might as well give up and search for some good local bands.
Mark my words: Grunge revival, and there's already a few bands making waves amongst radio rock stations, one example is Violent Soho, look in youtube for "Jesus Stole My Girlfriend" everything comes in cycles, and it's time for the 90's to influence the 10's (sounds weird calling it the 10's)

Grunge never went away, so why should it be revived?

I said "grunge revival" because that's the name people are throwing at new bands influenced by late 80's and early 90's grunge, not your average post-grunge radio rock bands like Nickelback (ewww) or Shinedown.
BTW, my username is based on one grunge classic from the early 90's, name the song for a hundred points!
