Here are 5 things EA screwed up this year
1. Sim City Disaster
2. Battlefield 4 issues
3.Command and Conquer Reboot Canceled
4. NBA LIVE 14 embarrassment
5. Won worst company of 2013
What caused EA to go wrong last year?
EA has been wrong every year for a decade or so. Horrid management. I wish Peter Moore would get out of there and go do something worthwhile, he's fallen far from his Sega and MS days.
I hope EA takes up the offer of putting Origin onto the Steambox without paying Valve anything. (I am not bothered for EA's games but I think that would mix up things a bit).
“30fps Is Not a Good Artistic Decision, It's a Failure”
Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
Hate to use cliche's, but EA is sort of like the epitome of a soul-less corporate behemoth that gobbles up smaller companies and strips their franchises of all their unique charm, and puts out a yearly product that never exceeds expectations because that's not part of the spreadsheet and sales chart.
I so wish the NFL would grant licenses to different companies based on some rotational model like they do with TV rights to broadcasting.
EA used to be a great company, back when the gaming market was less mainstream. Around the time where gaming became a big thing for society, EA drastically restructured its own practices. They threw out several IP's, most of which were unappealing to the masses, and instead focused on financially successful games. But since many among these masses play games without imagination, EA served them more games that were based on realistic activities and events (at least to a certain degree).
Now EA doesn't even try it anymore by themselves, instead playing it safe by producing the ever-identical waste. EA is in it for money, they always were.
Back in the "old" days, there was nothing that could guarantee a gaming companies' success, since gamers had a diverse range of interests. But with the mainstream, they found their greatest common denominator(s): competition. "Winning" was widely regarded as the one goal in games (at least by non-gamers and critics), and people new to gaming instinctively turned to the most competitive games they found (Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, FIFA/PES, Warcraft/Starcraft).
Now, the feeling of superiority is what drives many gamers to such competitive games, and EA was the first one to realize that barely any of those gamers really care about improvements, since it would potentially mean having to relearn something they were good in before. So of course they do what is best for business: throw out the same stuff while only tweaking things that potentially attract even more gamers to their stuff.
Yet now (or rather, since last year), this starts coming back to bite them. The internet laid out masses of arguments against EA, and slowly, people started feeling ripped off. EA has increasingly more trouble hiding their practices, and people exploit every weak point on any company. Tough luck that EA has so many of them, and even their "fans" start getting aware of what they do. But they can't just turn around and start from scratch. They've forgotten how to work with dedication, and as of yet, the usual way is still profitable enough. Still, they do worry about their reputation. But they have no idea on how to set it right in the near future, nor do they need to rush it anyway.
I guess EA can't really get out of this situation. If they decide taking their time to deliver better games, people with short attention spans will turn to the competition, but if they keep going ad it is now, those same people will eventually realize how much they're getting exploited and leave (which already starts happening).
