Basically nearly all the DS content that is supposed to use Nintendo Wifi Connection is basically just a few flags changed in the save game that unlocks stuff already on the cartridge.

Ok....what about paid DLC? I don't care about free on disc DLC.

..but... unlocks things already on the cartridge...? Like every game that has things to unlock...? o.o?

It's also worth mentioning that Pokemon (which is the best example of in-game locked content) is not made nor managed directly by Nintendo.

People seem to think that Pokemon is a first party series, but it's not.

I thought Pokémon was actually owned by Nintendo, but developed by Gamefreak.

Nintendo probably owns some or all the rights to the series (since they apparently own Game Freak), but Pokemon is much broader and independent from Nintendo than say... Zelda or Mario.

We see this all the time. A quick example that comes to mind is Halo, which is owned by Microsoft and developed by Bungie and now 343.

It's a little odd that we see this confusion with Pokémon, but not other games like Kirby.

Nintendo actually invented On-Disc DLC with Pokemon Red and Blue. Mew was essentially free On-Disc DLC. The worst part is that Gamefreak still does this practice and it's even worse now.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

there is no such thing as on-disc dlc, if its on disc its not dlc is unlockable, the problem is with companies that lie and try to charge you for unlocking content already on the disc by claiming is extra content you download for the web.... I don't see a problem with what Nintendo did because I don't think they ever claim it was extra content you were downloading it was always clear it was content that you unlock through wifi

Nintendo owns Pokemon. They do not own Game freak. Game freak is second party and Nintendo is the majority share holder of Game freak

@Brewsky: Yeah, it is a simple case of "they own them but they don't develop them". That's a second party game.

Nope. Second party is a studio under contract or partially (not majority) owned. Pokemon is a first party series.

Gamefreak is second party. It would be first party if it was 100% owned.

I don't think anyone has specific problems with free DLC.

name one nintendo game from the past (wii, DS or older) that has on disk "DLC" that you have to pay for getting unlocked.

Ryzen 5 2600
2x8GB DDR4 RAM 3000mhz
GTX 1060 6GB

SkywardLink98

While it's technically correct that Nintendo has done on-cart DLC, the title is extremely misleading.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

2nd party is one of those discussions that is too pointless and confusing to justify having
