Okay, I know I'm going to sound like I'm 8 right now, but I've been having nightmares recently. I don't remember what they're about, but I'm always alone in the dark, and they always end up with me waking up trying to catch my breath and grasp onto reality.

I don't know what I could do to quell these dark visions, because quite frankly, I'm scared to sleep now.

Any of you have some advice on how to deal with this?

I usually will turn on the lights, or at least put those soft-yellow lights in your bedroom so you won't see darkness in the room the moment you wake up.

Drink some warm water might help too though.

I occasionally feel the same way. When I have utterly creepy dreams, I have fear to go back to sleep. Don't feel awkward, man, I understand. I don't know if this is the strongest of advice, but what about reading a book that isn't dark or drawing a picture of something you like to give you different thoughts. Plus, my mom says when I am stressed to breath in deeply (I have to feel it in my stomach) and breath out through my mouth a few times to calm down. I don't know if it's the best of advice, but it may work. Don't feel awkward, man. I feel you.

Even though I have beaten many of the games I'm still playing, I play them not to win, but to have fun.

Try reading a book that sooths you or listen to some calming music. It might even relax you enough that your dreams aren't even prominent. Sometimes we can sleep so good that we don't have very 'active' dreams o:

@darkfenrir Would a nightlight (those little thingies) come off as pathetic? I haven't used one in ages...

I know how you feel man, what I do is read One Piece before bed and my nightmares dropped dramatically. If you don't like manga when I play Mario before I sleep when I'm not in the mood for manga.

@Nobodys_Angel I find that it's better to be seen as pathetic rather than waking up and finding that it's DARK IN THE ROOM AND MY DREAM FEELS SO REAL.

A little light means you don't wake up to darkness in the room, and that's better. Nightlight isn't that big, so you can just put them in drawers when you sleep, I don't think you'll have any problems.

I rarely have dreams now let alone nightmares, usually I would wake up, calm down and go to sleep like nothing happened, but not everyone is like that so why not leave your main bed room light on or turn on the tv?

Because where i live, rooms don't have a central light: we need to install our own lamps and stuff to provide lighting, and my lamp is faaaar to bright to not be a nuisance to everyone else in the household.

Great point, @Mickey. It is not awkward to sleep with a nightlight, even I, a month ago, feared nightmares when it was completely dark, I felt the need for a nightlight.

I don't have much experience with the matter, but an idea I came up with was to make a playlist of claming music on your ipod, phone, or whatever to take you mind off it and clamly put you to sleep. Make sure not to have turned on repeat or make the lst too long though.

I'm gonna try again.

I have no clue. My nightmares just come at complete random no matter what I do. Luckily, once I wake up and realize it's not real, I'm back to normal.

I have a simple solution, just don't sleep!

But to be serious, besides lighting sound is another alternative. Now, I'm not one who gets nightmares (usually), but I cannot sleep if there isn't some sort of background noise, in my case in the form of a fan (or plug in heater during winter). Perhaps a combination of nightlight and small plug-in fan will work for you?

Just get a night light. There's nothing to be ashamed of for having one, and it surely beats having to go to sleep in a pitch dark room after you've just woken up from a terrible nightmare.

Except for the fear of the unknown.
