If Nintendo was in "third place", I believe we'd see more quality games because they'd be trying harder to please us. Plus then maybe the prices of some of their games could go down a bit. Also I believe a struggling Nintendo would be more willing to give us more VC games.

It could work but it needs to have a reason to release them and to not release them at the same time. A stuggling successful Nintendo in other words. Fight for the win.
But by being succesful Nintendo has created lots of spare cash, which is being spent on a huge Research and Development center, that will feed Nintendo classics to us for the next few generations, surely that can only be a good thing? And if they were in 3rd place as you put it, for say 2/3 generations, they could end up dropping out of the game industry altogether, which would suck!
I don't agree sorry, I think you are looking at it from a selfish viewpoint. Don't panic, jeez.
They wouldn't be going under if they were in 3rd place. They'd still be profitable. But I don't see how it's not logical to think that if fans were flocking towards the PS3 and 360, Nintendo wouldn't play it safe and come up with some cooler ideas.
It's like when you like a girl but she doesn't like you, you'll do anything for her. But if she really likes you, then you don't have to do anything and you can play it safe, without ever buying her dinner or gifts.

Who knows, we may just see Nintendo knocked back off top. Not this gen I'm sure, but who knows what will happen next round? Maybe they'll pull some N64 syle bad choices.

I imagine that there are lots of kids and non-business types on this gaming site though. While your statement might be (probably is) true about the general population, I wouldn't level the same conclusion about the members here.

It wasn't a criticism, but it is a truism. People forget Nintendo is a business and fall into the false belief that the quality of Nintendo's products (or lack thereof, depending on your perspective) is something more than a business decision.

Like it worked in the Gamecube era? No thank you. I don't want Geist, Fire Emblem, Mario Baseball, and a New Zelda.
I want Mario Galaxy 2, a new Zelda, a badass Metroid game, Pikmin 3, Sin & Punishment 2, Mario & Luigi 3, NSMB Wii, and Monado. I'm sorry but thats just me.
the benifit to the Wii and the DS is that they can have experimental games on it without having huge budgets. games like little kings story and mighty flip champs and more wouldnt b possible if nintendo didnt allow its helpers to be creative
I'm guessing what the poster was getting at was "What would happen if Nintendo suddenly had a fire lit under their a** by being in third place? Would they do things differently?"

Remember that Nintendo IS games. It's not like they have an entire consumer electronics juggernaut or a practical consumer operating system / office productivity software monopoly behind them to fund their failures.
They NEED to be in a leadership position to maintain their creativity.
Next gen they better make "hardcore" games or I'm switching to Sony.
It's comments like this that make me wonder about some people. Why did you buy a Wii?
