There seems to be a huge difference in the way people pronounce these years: others say "two thousand (and) eleven", while others, like me, say "twenty eleven". Which way do you say these years and do you have a reason for saying them that way?
Personally, I think it sounds much better when you say "twenty eleven" and it's more faithful to the way we've been saying the past years too: no one called 1985 "one thousand nine hundred and eighty five". Are the people gonna talk about "two thousand seventy two" and so on in the future?
Same, "twenty" whatever. Much easier to say than "two thousand and"! Plus when it gets to the likes of 2106 we're not going to be saying "the year two thousand one hundred and six", are we?
Though I used to hear some people - not many - use it much earlier, like "twenty oh six" for 2006. Just... no.
I had been saying it like "two thousand and eleven" etc. until I read someone pointing out how needlessly long that is when you could just say "twenty eleven". After all, we never said "one thousand nine hundred and eighty seven" for 1987, etc. So I'm trying to ween myself off saying it in full.
I sometimes say both, but "twenty eleven" is less of a mouth full. I like the sound of "two thousand and twelve" more than "twenty twelve" though... rolls off the tounge.
too-thou-zand and eel-ev-in or sometimes I pronounce it Zousande, because I like sounding like zee mad French man.

i call it 'two thousand eleven'; no 'and' — it's a bit cumbersome IMO. 'twenty-eleven' would sound silly to me and would probably garner odd looks from co-workers/family/etc. and so forth. :3

Oddly, I've heard quite a few people say 'two thousand and eleven', but refer to 2012 as 'twenty twelve', so perhaps a change is on the way.
Yeah, I think it's changing now. I guess because for the first decade of the century you couldn't really say 2003, 2007, etc. as "twenty three", "twenty seven" as it would be too confusing, but post-2010 it works.
I say twenty eleven or I shall say two thousand and eleven, either one comes out of my mouth so say both, doesn't bother me at all.
