Topic: Gaming Aspects/Franchises that Need to Die...

Is there a common aspect of games that you just can't stand anymore? Or, do you not care much for a franchise, and wish it would just go away forever? Voice your opinion here!
We've already seen a few things begin to fade away from the gaming world, such as the lives system...But I also believe that forced stealth sequences should be the next to step up to the chopping block. I can understand a game that bases itself around such missions, because that's the experience a person who purchases that game wants. However, in games where most of the focus is placed on action, it is very off-putting to have to spend a level sneaking around enemies that are conveniently "invinsible." I've come across this in games like Phantom Hourglass. Sure, the moments were tense, but the whole aspect of it just didn't fit the game well at all...

I'm working on a game that's coming out soon!

THIS. Spinoffs are one thing, but 13 or more main-series games? Ridiculous.

An aspect that drives me nuts:

You can't perform an action until the game gives you an on-screen prompt to do the action. So, my special forces soldier character, doesn't know how to run or draw his gun for the first 20 minutes of the game until I see a "PRESS B TO [ACTION]"?!? Stupid. Just friggin' stupid.

I will get a lot of hate for this, but Pokemon. For years its been more of the same, except just adding more Pokemon. But I know it has its fans and I'm in the super minority here.

1. Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda
2. Super Mario Brothers 2, Zelda II
3. Super Mario Brothers USA, A Link to the Past
4. Super Mario Brothers 3, Link's Awakening
5. Super Mario World, Ocarina of Time
6. Super Mario Land, Majora's Mask
7. Super Mario Land 2, Oracle of Ages
8. New Super Mario Brothers, Oracle of Seasons
9. New Super Mario Brothers, Minish Cap
10.Super Mario 64, Wind Waker
11. Super Mario Sunshine, Twilight Princess
12. Super Mario Galaxy, Phantom Hourglass
13. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Spirit Tracks

Lines up pretty well, doesn't it? Yes, you can argue that any one of those is a spin-off for any reason, but Final Fantasy fans can do the same. In fact, I think Final Fantasy can make this argument even better. 11 and 14 are MMOs, which is a much greater difference from the rest of the series than any Mario or Zelda game can claim. And just as the 2D / 3D split is a marked difference in Mario and Zelda, it was for Final Fantasy, too. Nintendo avoids this criticism by not using numbers in their titles anymore, for the most part, but it's otherwise no different.

@Vay I'm with you all the way. The series needs one of two things (to make me interested in it, at least; obviously it needs nothing new for commercial success): A) A complete reinvention of the system of play, or B) a completely new theme and title, but the same underlying principles. I'd be happy with a nice even mix of both: Some new creatures not called Pokemon that are stylistically different, and some new ideas that affect the game as a whole, not superficial changes.

I'd consider the sports game more of a spinoff than the one you listed Adam, but some of those games have various features that set them apart from others (Galaxy's physics, Sunshine's, water theme, etc.)

The older 2D Mario and Zelda games are usually pretty similar though

Final Fantasy games have distinguishing features in each game. They are constantly reinventing the battle system and the world the characters live in. Mario changing physics and theme has got nothing on the series.

Of course, I find FF's constant indecision about how to make a good battle system one of its more annoying qualities, but that's another story.

True that. I'll just stick with Echoes of Time

I'll just stick with The Crystal Bearers and pretend it's the only Final Fantasy game in existence.
Sonic should die because I keep getting burned on the 3D games.
I also agree with Vay and Adam, though for a different reason. While always fun and addicting, each Pokemon game is so similar to the last that the series has just become a huge money-sucker for me that I keep giving into. Come to think of it, I might pre-order SoulSilver in a few minutes!

I think sequels should be similar, myself. If there is a sequel to a movie or a book, do they just slap a 2 on it and then change everything? No, the video game is the only medium that for some reason prizes inconsistency in sequels.

People will always make the same argument: Iconic names sell. But you don't see James Bond thrown into sports movies and comedies. Why drag Mario through every type of game imaginable? Why call a game Final Fantasy when it is a completely new world and story with a completely new battle system?

Considering the weight these big companies pull, you wouldn't expect them to be so afraid of putting a character to rest for once. I'd like to see Square continue making these games without hiding behind the Final Fantasy name. Let one actually be final for once. What's more, I'd like to see Nintendo (and plenty of other companies, not just the Big N) take the play experiences they've had for so long but apply them to new universes instead of relying on icons. A platformer starring someone other than Mario, an adventure game without Link, etc.

Mario isn't so bad because it isn't story-driven. But how many times is Link going to banish Ganon, get the Triforce, and rescue Zelda? How many times is Samus going to, by some unforeseen misfortune, lose all her abilities and have to regain them scattered across a planet, a planet which seems to have been designed to hold weapons for her arrival? The thin plot contrivances are getting old. I don't need an involved plot, but even in its absence I want a new world to explore, a new main character to befriend, a new evil pig-guy to kill, etc.

So for my part, I'd say all franchises need to die, but let their concepts live on. Give a good game two or three straightforward sequels, and then give a new name a turn.

I meant James Pond. My bad, just a typo.

Call of Duty. It has had it's time as FPS king, and there isn't much they can do with the series anymore.
Mario Kart, they killed it with MKWii for me.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

Adam

No, this was a satire. I haven't actually seen this one, but I don't imagine it had much to do with the book at all. The new Bond might not have either, though. It's been a very long time since I read a James Bond book.
