Random battles, Chrono Trigger proved at least to me anyway, that they aren't needed, far better to be able to see the enemies, and decide for yourself to fight on, or head back if need be.

@Adam While I would like to see Nintendo try new platformers without Mario, I don't think that particular franchise should die. After decades of the universe and characters being expanded upon (I believe the RPG's do this especially well), I honestly don't think the next "Mario" game starring a whole different cast of characters and locales would be quite as fun for me as the familiar plumber hitting familiar blocks and jumping on familiar enemies, 'cause I know this guy. I feel a connection to him and his games.

Take Super Smash Bros. Brawl for instance. It's been called a love letter to all things Nintendo, and it's because of the experiences we've had with these characters once upon a time that we want to play as them and get a warm fuzzy feeling listening to their music and playing on their stages. I just think there's really something to be said for nostalgia.

On the other hand, Zelda is getting really old... I'm not against Ganon dying and Hyrule saved once and for all. I feel that Metroid's, as a 2D series at least, story and characters really don't matter all the much, the same way "Mario isn't so bad because it isn't story-driven."

In conclusion, it's about the memories.

That's exactly the point though, Od. You "know this guy" because he's been in a million bazillion games. If they would give a new character a chance once in awhile, you'd get to know them and like them, too. It's a circular argument that the industry has clung to for too long. You can only get to know new characters by playing their games, but if we aren't willing to because an old character is hogging the spotlight, then how does that change?

As for Metroid, I wish story didn't matter to it, but Nintendo is convinced it does, apparently. I'm tired of the excuses Prime and Fusion have given for Samus's sudden, repeated crippling (seriously, wear a safety belt, woman). Either take the story out, or give it a new one please, one that at least pretends to be plausible.

And it's not like the gazillion Mario and Zelda games will disappear over night. People who gravitate towards these games for the memories will still keep going back to them to play. I certainly do. But it'd be nice to make new memories with someone other than the usual suspects. Diversity is pretty cool.

These franchise needs to die:
Pokemon: Seriously, this franchise has been milked to death and Game Freak is refusing to innovate.
Guitar Hero: They can't do much with the series anymore.
Halo: It's prime time has pass. Now all they can do is milk the living **** out of it and the quality of the series will decline.

I've been thinking that for a while now, but forgot to say it.
Indeed, that franchise is in essence dead. The problem with basing a game around "awesome guitar hits" is the fact that you will eventually run out of said "awesome guitar hits." This has happened already, after the release of Guitar Hero III. Every other game after that has tanked...They've just run out of songs, and won't admit it.

I actually agree, but for a different reason. It isn't milked as much as people think, there are three games in the main series, and two spin offs. One of the spin offs isn't even a FPS like the others. Other series, such as Zelda has been milked worse. That isn't saying it is bad, though. I think Halo needs to die after Reach because it is Bungie's last game in the Halo series. Bungie has done great with Halo, giving it a great reputation around the gaming world, and I'd hate to see some other company come along and screw that up. I honestly can't see any other company doing with Halo what Bungie can. It is like what Twilight did to Vampires. People used to be afraid of them, awesome, but then Twilight came along and made them sparkle, not awesome.

The Game.

This. Though I enjoy playing Halo 3, I hate the idea of people ONLY playing Halo and Call of Duty, and let's not forget the new ones, like Left 4 Dead, and Gears of War. There are other genres out there. RPG's, Platformers, Action/Adventure.

I own Modern Warfare 2, but I hate it. It's my brother's game though. Final Fantasy XIII will give me an excuse to make him stop.

Pokemon will never die. As long as Japan stays a gaming country, we WILL have Pokemon.

Gears isn't as popular as the other shooters you mentioned, and Gears isn't even a FPS, it is a TPS, the same as Battlefront or Uncharted.

Why do you care what he plays?

Well, I have to constantly hear him as he screams at the TV, and he has gotten much worse, behaviour wise.

Why would Mario and Zelda need to go? They are very popular franchises. Sure they have hogged the spotlight but Nintendo has attempted to add more games to their big franchises: some very successful, some not as successful, and others not so successful

I second Pokemon and Guitar Hero. The original Pokemon games were great, but then they just started making them bigger and adding more Pokemon, but it's the same thing over and over. Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Everthing else like that is just annoying. Just make one and release downloadable songs, for the people who still care.

Yeah, no need to get mad at him because he's happy.

Anyways, Game aspects that need to die? I can't think of any off the top of my head. I was gonna say Quick-Time events, but a lot of developers have actually done them right and made the experience more memorable, and I can only think of two games where they actually became a nuisance(KH2 and Ninja Blade, aka How not to do QTE's). I think the only thing I want is for them to stop using Nolan North in so many different action games. Or at least stretch him a little - he's the same G-d damn character in every single game!

As for series that need to die, I'd say Tomb Raider, but they're actually doing better with last couple of installments, so there might be a chance that the next game could actually be really good.

And Guitar Hero can go die when they finally make Guitar Hero: Elvis Edition. Then it'll finally be totally and utterly irrelevent.

The only one that I honestly think should die is...Rabbids. They stopped being cool after, like, the second game, and the quality has been going downhill. Plus, I can't help but wonder why, with the sudden popularity, they don't use it to promote a new Rayman platformer instead of more pointless mini-games.

I'd also say Mario Party, but I think it's already dead. And I've been saying Mario Kart needs to die since the first one, but I know that'll never happen.

Unfortunately, I agree that Mario Party is dead already. I was a huge Mario Party Fan when I was younger, but then they started getting worse, and worse, and worse, until we ended up with MP8.
Guitar hero should die. Just add dlc.

Just let it happen.

I miss the days when there was such a category as "adventure" or "action/adventure". I remember when I would go through a list of "action/adventure" games just looking for a game I might have missed when it first came out and there were so many games. Now the largest category is "shooter", which some sites categorize into action, just without the adventure. What happened?

I find nothing wrong with random battles in RPGs, to be quite honest.

I don't feel there's a gaming aspect and/or franchise that should be stopped.

To each their own

I agree about the random battles. But then again, Pokemon would become incredibly boring without them.

I'd consider the sports game more of a spinoff than the one you listed Adam, but some of those games have various features that set them apart from others (Galaxy's physics, Sunshine's, water theme, etc.)

The older 2D Mario and Zelda games are usually pretty similar though

What?

Every single Final Fantasy game is an entirely different game from every other one. Different characters, different stories (both pretty critical elements of RPGs), different battle systems, different leveling systems, different music.

The Mario games are far more similar to one other, and Zelda games are carbon copies of one another.

You, sir, have clearly NOT played many Final Fantasy games to any great extent, at all.

Beyond that, why the hell should the Final Fantasy series "die"? I can promise you, for every one of you who doesn't want the game, there are 10 of us that eagerly look forward to each new game.

And while it's possible for you to not buy a game that you don't like, it's not possible for us to buy a game we really want but doesn't exist.

Honestly, how selfish can you be?
