They matter to me because as soon as Sony became involved all the life was sucked out of gaming.
(I am just hoping somebody will return the favour to them someday).
Care to explain that? I fail to see how Sony has sucked the life out of gaming.
On topic, I don't get the fanboys either. I play games because I enjoy gaming, that is why I have a PS4, Wii U and an Xbox One. If people didn't feel the need to constantly defend their purchase to other people discussing gaming would be a lot more enjoyable.
Fanboys just suck. No matter how you put it. I try to avoid them like the plague but they often say something so crazy or wrong that I have to intervene. I don't really do that anymore though because no matter what I say, their view won't change. It's annoying talking to people like that. I just let them have their fun.
As long as there's a profit, they don't matter. Problem is, nintendo hasn't turned a profit in 3 years now. This can't last much longer without some changes.
Except that they have tons of cash in reserve, enough to last them a decade minimum of the previous years poor sales. But as of the the of 2013, Wii U was finally selling at a profit per console, so unless something catastrophic happens, they'll turn a profit in 2014, no changes necessary.
Making a profit per console doesn't mean Nintendo is going to be profitable. They still have to sell a certain amount of consoles.
Think, man!
Not sure if you were serious, but I thought about it and my comment still stands lol. Let's say just for example it costs $100 to make a Wii U, and they sell them fo $200. Then let's say ther montly expenses are $1000 a month. If they sold one Wii U, they would have made profit on the one console, but still did not make enough profit overall to cover their monthly expenses, resulting in a loss. Ya feel me?

I hope you're right. It doesn't matter how much they have in reserves, a company will liquidate its assets if it can no longer generate a profit. The wii u's failure I fear will affect the brand quality and recognition of the next console.

They don't really matter anymore. Compared to the 90's when Nintendo and SEGA were all out battling for the 100% market share, they actually created the console wars themselves through marketing. You either owned a Nintendo, or a SEGA.
Nowadays, everyone's in the Love Generation. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all have lots respect for each other, even going to the point where the latter two congratulated each other on their console launches. Having multiple consoles isn't unheard of anymore. There's still competition, yes, but it's much lighter than it used to be.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
They don't matter to me, they of course matter to Microsoft and Sony executives...... apparently they don't matter to Nintendo executives but they should as their "we're not competing mentality' is what have lead them to release sub-par products
I have to agree on your terminology. There are MANY things sub-par about the Wii U or 3DS IMO.
Have Nintendo made a convincing argument for it through marketing?...yes!
I'm totally unsatisfied with my Nintendo platforms, and I own a very powerful PC and a Steam account that get way more use for gaming. But the games I own for Wii U run beautifully and provide countless hours of fun.
Again...Nintendo have failed to market their product and capture the buzz that the Wii captured (even though it had poor third party support and died early...) ...but that doesn't diminish the quality of the system.
Have a 3DS and a mobile running side by side. Then come back and say it isn't subpar hardware.

I wonder if the big three's new found respect for each other is in a response to smart phone gaming.

Maybe he is referring to the melodramatic interactive guy soap operas with a high emphasis on shiny realistic graphics that the majority of video games have become? I don't know, I would like to hear @unrandomsam expand on this thought as well.
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.
