Why do you guys like Sonic games so much? Is it because of the nostalgia? I never understood why so many loved the Sonic games, they are SO BORING! I'm not trolling, hear me out. I've played all the 'classic 2D good Sonic games' and never really liked any of them. Maybe it's just me, but they are insanely boring. The only Sonic's I've enjoyed were Sonic Advance, and from what I've played of it Sonic Chronicles. Someone explain all the love for Sonic!

It's fun running around really fast whilst jumping on things. More fun than running around shooting things (except for Contra and Metal Slug. Those are awesome.)

I'd say one of Sonic's biggest appeals is he's such a well designed character. Not just in terms of visual design, which is very unique and original, but also in how he fits perfectly into his game environment. Sonic's stages fit around pinball and roller coaster themes - his speed and the fact he can turn into a ball work with this environment. He's designed for the game - not many characters do that. Most games characters can just be taken out of one game and put in another but there arn't many characters who would be able to function in Sonics environment like Sonic does.

I like it because it's a fun, fast, and forgiving game. They're not like Mario where the stages are littered with pits and instant death traps. I actually stand a chance of finishing the level. At the same time, there are plenty of secrets and alternate roots that make them highly replayable, and I always challenge myself to beat the levels as fast as possible while aquiring as many rings as possible. Plus, in the old games, the speed was a reward for being skilled at the game, and if you wanted to go fast, you had to memorize the levels and be good at timing your jumps, so there was always an incentive to get good at the game without having to keep you from seeing more than just a few levels until you get good at it, the way other platformers work.

Oh, and as Madgear pointed out, there character designs and stage designs are very impressive. I also love the music in those games, too. There are also codes and cheats in the older games that you could mess around with. Honestly, I have to ask: why do people NOT like Sonic? The only legitimate complaint I've ever heard is that it's too easy, which it is, if all you do is rush towards the end. Personally, I like to think there's more to playing games than just seeing the ending.

madgear and Mickeymac pretty much said it. I'm surprised you can call them boring. Not one part of the original 1-3K was boring to me.

You have to consider that back in the early 90s, Sonic was basically a revolution in gaming. There was nothing like it when it came out - sure, there were platformers, but none as accessible, beautifully-rendered, fast-moving, or with as distinctive a main character. He pretty much kick-started the "animal mascot" fad of the 90s.

Also, the artwork, level/character design and music all meshed to create a complete experience. Part of the appeal of 1-3K when I was little was reveling in the games' stages, artwork and music.

Sonic was great back in his Genesis era. Nowadays, not as much...

The speed, the attitude, no special gimmicks (like swords or hoverboards), and MORE SPEED made the games very fun and different.

well its a platformer like Mario and even though hes not as good as b4 I still thing the only terrible Sonic is 06
Shadows ok, Heroes ok, Rush, awesome, unleashed great, Stories ok, adventure awesome, and colors looks cool as well, at least the DS version, wonder if 3DS Sonic will be good or awful? also I think sega was the only one who stood a chance against Nintendo and plus Nintendo made great things because of Sega, when Microsoft and Sony said they are pulling out "BIG GAMES" Nintendo had to step it up, but what we got from the HD's were Skittles and $200 Archery. and from Nintendo 3DS, DKCR, Kirby, MGS, SSF4, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, and Pilotwing. or as I call it Reloading of the ammo used on sega.

I'd agree with you on all points but Shadow the Hedgehog. I got the sense that the developers weren't even trying with that game.

Old Sonic games are almost like racing/platformer games where you can go at your own pace looking for the quickest, funnest, or coolest routes through the level...however the newer games don't do this.

Yeah, that's the most disappointing aspect of the newer games. Sure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Unleashed sort of had alternate roots, they weren't done nearly as well as in the old games. I hope Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors corrects this.

Why do I like Sonic games? I don't. I used to though back when Sega had some standards and Sonic Team was held a bit accountable for their quality control and stupidly bad ideas.

The pre-3D era Sonic games had this excellent mix of level design, speed, and good character/boss creation which made things just that damn good. It was quite a good mix, even the audio had some trippy catchy tunes, perhaps not so memorable as Mario stuff as you can't hum most of them but they're excellent regardless. The games were set up with some pretty interesting and varying terrain, and it was neat as it wasn't your usual dude helps chick out of bad situation type setup, but it was more of a 'friends' game helping out each other so it had more motivation than the old played out fairy tale type stuff that Mario uses so effectively others seem canned copying it.,

The problem is and Sonic Adventure 1 was right on the edge, but it was the start of a lot of fail that grew exponentially by release. They started with poor quality testing leaving a few holes in solid walls or bosses so you not they got hit, and over kill with lame toss in characters. Then it went downhill with a lot of holes, some crashes, issues with balance, really badly done characters. Finally it went into the stupidity of Shadow the Hedgehog or broken flip control in Secret Rings that didn't work right(bad too as it jumped) much of the time. Sega ruined their best thing, it would be like if Nintendo fired Miyamoto(or he quit) and they gave the franchise over to some B-team who just were fans but have no clue or years of talent behind it.

@J.K.: In fairness, Sonic has never been all-excellent. Even in the 'glory days' there were the GameGear titles, a large percentage of which were frankly awful - we've got Shadow, '06 and Secret Rings as the 'worst' Sonic games now, and back then we had Labyrinth, Blast (GameGear Sonic Blast, not Sonic 3D), and Knuckle's Chaotix.
Sega has always milked Sonic for all he's worth, it's not a new-generation thing. Nowadays we have Advance, Rush and (hopefully) Sonic 4 and Colours as the better Sonic games.

Because different gamers like different games. And those games happen to Sonic games.

Yes, but all gamers have reasons for liking the games they do. All he's asking for is what those reasons are.

I like Labyrinth and Knuckles' Chaotix. Also, how can anyone say Sonic 4 and Colors are good if they're not even out yet? >:3

And I quite enjoyed Secret Rings, as it happens The three are just widely regarded as the 'worst' Sonic games. Although perhaps I should've said Black Knight rather than Secret Rings, forgot about that one entirely.
And we can't say for certain that they're good, hence the 'hopefully' in parenthesis. But initial feedback on both titles is largely positive.

I like the Classic Sonic Games alot better then the Sonic we have today.
There only a few new Sonic games I enjoy, like Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush.
And the only 3D Sonic Game i played was Sonic Adventure 2, and it wasn't that bad too, i did enjoy it when, i was younger.
But theres one Sonic Game I really enjoy on the GBA was Sonic Battle, it was really good for a Sonic Fighting game.

But I really like my Sonic to talk less and Run more.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.
