Thanks for the heads up DiggerDan

I can confirm that there is definitely a problem as mentioned by the OP. I and some others bought the Nyko battery and the date/time reset and we can no longer street pass. . I really hope someone discovers a workaround other than a full reset. I've tried forcing to sleep, deleting miis, changing miis, nothing works. Such a huge limitation since I street pass with my sons 3rd everyday. Since it reset to 01/01' it'll probably fix itself in 11 years!

Side note, as I was typing this, notification popped up for my neighbors mii! I haven't street passed with him for a few days, so maybe it's only those that you met during the day that you swapped out the battery.

@DiggerDan: Any news so far? Is it possible again to street pass within your family. It makes sense that it might only be for a few days.

I'll probably get my Nyko Pak tomorrow and I'm not sure what to do now....Has anyone tried the method with leaving the 3DS plugged into AC while switiching the batteries?

Yes, but only because I did the system format. Is it possible to charge the battery pack ready for the swap? I was able to swap out one battery without resetting the clock.

I suggest getting the new battery charged, if possible, keeping the mains power into the 3DS, turning off the wifi, get a bit of sticky tape on the old battery to act as a tab to pull it out more easily, getting the new battery hovering in position and swapping as fast as possible. It might work ok.

That seems strange to not have a cell battery keeping the time - failsafes should always be built in like that! (Especially with the amount of games - at least on the DS - that say problems might be caused if dates are changed).

Crazy.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

But in most cases the main battery keeps the power to the clock and the issues only arise in most games if you change the date and then run the game again. In the case with the 3DS, there's the opportunity to set the date right before running the game again. This just seems to be an issue with the way StreetPass works. It's simply a bug that could be patched. Adding a backup battery just adds to the build cost of the device and is only really necessary in devices that normally run from mains power.

I can 100% confirm this. My daughter and I both have a 3DS and we have been streepassing every day to complete Find Mii. Anyway, a couple of days ago I got her the Nyko battery pak and after I changed the battery out, the time and date were reset. I put them back to normal and we have been unable to street pass every since.

I really hope this can be fixed with a firmware update. I guess my only other option would be to do a complete reset on her system.

I did everything exactly as you told me and it worked fine. So thanks a thousand times. I'm glad I read this a day before the Nyko pack arrived from the states. But since the 3DS went out I guess the AC doesn't matter. You just have to be quick. My girlfriend pulled out the battery and I slamed the new one in. ^^

I hope many people read this so they don't get the problem. And I hope the may update will fix every single bug. ^^

Please take the time to contact Nintendo (even if all you can do is reach customer service). Yes, they will tell you to update the firmware and offer repairs, just be sure you're clear you HAVE updated, and that this is still a problem. I'm sure they have a procedure for reporting bugs sent in to them to the people who are actually in charge of fixing them. If nobody tells Nintendo about this, there's no way it will get fixed by firmware update. This is also a bug that probably a lot of people won't see, b/c most won't bother changing the battery, so the few who do see it need to be vocal for Nintendo to know there's something wrong. That being said, I think I speak for everyone still looking to get a 3DS (and possibly a stronger battery) in saying thanks for letting us know.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Hey can you post the steps that worked for you? I would like to get the Nyko battery for mine as well, so I'd like to repeat the same steps that worked for you.

Will do. I work in the software industry, so I should be able to type up a decent bug report.

I missed this post earlier. Glad it worked for you. I should probably have included "Turn the thing off (ie not in sleep mode)" too to reduce all power usage as much as possible, but I'm really pleased it worked.

Just to throw it out there... It might not be a good idea to try to swap the battery while the console is plugged in to AC. I don't know for sure but I wouldn't just do it without at least consulting the manual or asking customer service.

Thanks for the info DiggerDan.

Oh yeah, about that Streetpass/internet thing... Is that really true? How does that make any sense? That would mean that Streetpass and Spotpass work against each other...
I guess maybe the system can only be open to one type of wireless connection at once? That would be unfortunate though because you'd generally consider a widespread available WiFi connection to be a good thing, yet any open WiFi in range could interfere with potential Streetpass opportunities.

You can have wi-fi switched on, but if its connected to a wi-fi network, you won't get em, hence the reason why Streetpass was advertised with the system closed.

But the whole point of SpotPass is that you can connect to the internet passively, even with the console in sleep mode.

If you read the booklet that came with the system, it says SpotPass cannot be used when using local wireless, StreetPass cannot be used when using internet.

Okay, but that still kinda stinks. That means StreetPass and SpotPass are conflicting features.

Aviator

No it doesn't. StreetPass is local wireless, SpotPass is Internet. I don't see how that conflicts?
