On many video games forums I can see lots of love for the 3DS.

I did not get the original 3DS : glossy look, tiny screen, poor battery... were deal breakers to me (and I remembered the first GBA, followed by the SP, the first tank DS, followed by the DSi)... then the XL came and I tried it in a shop. I loved it. You won't get a 3DS because you want the sleekest and the most powerful system. Screen is kind of average, raw power is weaker than some phones...

However, the Nintendo games and the right feeling of a true portable device can make you jump in. The 3D also, I was about to forget. It is interesting, a nice curiosity, and gives life to some games nicely. But when I have the console in my hands, I move it. And when I move it, I lose the 3D effect. So I end up leaving it off. Maybe this 3d technology is more suited to a fixed screen, I mean, not mobile?

Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart are my favourites games so far. They are not technology showcase, but they look nice, run smoothly and play perfectly. The charming SM3DL surprised me by being in the middle of classics Mario and 3Ds Mario and Mario Kart is great, if you had a break with the serie since some time (If you played a lot to Mario Kart DS and Wii, it starts to be a bit... redundant).

I got Luigi's Mansion too. Next Level Games did a great job. It's maybe the greatest looking game on the 3DS. But while I enjoyed some parts of it, It's not an all time favourite, in my opinion. The gameplay mechanic are repetitive and frame rate bothers me sometimes. I'm also always feeling the game could have been much more suited to the Wii, or... the Wii U. But well, at least they did a game on the 3DS.
There is Donkey Kong Country. A great games. But this games is already available elsewhere. Its not a remake, just a port. Monster Games are good developer, I wished they did something new instead of. Couldn't see by myself, if the lower framerate is a problem.
Lego City Undercover The Chase is average and got less love than the big brother on the Wii U. Sonic All Star is mediocre on 3DS. Resident Evil Revelation was a good effort, but I'm not really into RE. Paper Mario isn't my thing...

I feel good games are a bit shy... not that much choice on the system. I'm conscious that maybe there is choice, but not enough for my own taste.
Where are all those cool licenses from the N64? F-Zero, 1080, Wave Race, Snowboard kids, Rush, Cruis'n, Hydro thunder (will need to change the name cause it belongs to Microsoft now) Diddy kong racing, some platformers (I miss Rare). I would like to have more choice, and the return of the player's choice serie. I would love to play again updates of those games, and be surprised by new things too.

The Eshop. I got Nano Assault EX. I feel it was a bit pricey and liked it less than Iridion... Graphics are a bit generic and the game isn't as fast as Super Stardust for example. Gunman Clive? Great pick up for 2 bucks, nice game, would love to see more of this quality at this price. Why can I download Crazy Taxi on my phone, but not on my 3DS ? Why the choice is so limited and the games so pricey ? I'm not even talking about the crazy prices of digital version of physical games. No way I spend 45€ for Pilotwings (good but content rushed to be on time with launch of the console?) or NSMB2... especially with the online policies of Nintendo.
Where are games like Riptide GP or Big Buggy Blitz?
And the Virtual Console... uff... the prices... the choice.. where is the Supernes ? Maybe the N64 is too much too emulate but the Supernes why not ?

It happens some times I take the 3DS in my hands and check the Eshop for a cool game to buy. Then I see there isn't anything - for my taste (some people may be fully satisfied with pushmo and some others - and I shut down the console. Same in real shops. I would like to get a new game. I see Lego the Chase, humm this one isn't that good, will wait maybe one day if cheaper. Then I see NSMB2, "hey not bad, hey 40€-45€! Hey nope."

I don't really have a crush on this system, despite Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart. But they came long time ago, what is next? So I'm surprised to read more and more that "the 3DS is the greatest console ever".

Any other party poopers like me ? We can try to do the most boring and depressing topic of this forum. It can be sad it would be nice...

Can't say I agree at all. The 3DS has provided some of the most memorable moments with a game system for me. It may seem early but I really think the 3DS might jus be my all time favorite game system handheld or otherwise. It doesn't look like it will be losing that title any time soon either since animal crossing new leaf is out in just 11 agonizingly long days (that game will own me for an unhealthy length of time). So yeah, sorry but I can't relate to you much at all...actually, maybe I can? Perhaps your view of the 3DS is how I might view a PSP or a Vita.....they have a couple ok-good games but are ultimately very non-spectacular in my eyes.

It's ok OP: It's not the greatest console ever. But it's still a party in your pocket.

It's perfectly okay to have an opinion, my friend. Some games will only appeal to certain people. Although if you are really having trouble to find games you like I would suggest to find some recommendations by users or lists - it always helps to read some reviews to find what you do and don't like, too.

I agree with you! You gotta be careful though, since a lot of people around here don't really grasp the concept of there being anything in between 'best ever' and 'terrible'. I really like my 3DS, but whenever I read someone saying the 3DS is their favourite console of all time, it makes me wonder what they've been playing in the past.

Super Mario 3D Land is one of the best Mario games ever for me. It's pretty much a perfect handheld game. Fire Emblem: Awakening is also top tier game, and quite possibly the best in the series. I really can't praise it enough. Luigi's Mansion is also excellent, as is the port of Donkey Kong Country Returns. I think Kid Icarus has several big problems, but it's still in the good category. I'm not so hot on Mario Kart, but that's just personal preference, being burned out on the series rather than having any complaints about the game itself.

Personally, it's got 3/4 must have games right now, and then another tier of 5-6 really good games just below that. I'm pretty sure at this stage of the DS's life, it had a big, more varied library, so in that respect the 3DS is a little disappointing, but... let's just say it had a late start. Apart from Super Mario 3D Land, it's taken two years after launch for the second game I really, really had to play to arrive, but now there's a steady flow of Nintendo games coming, so 2013 should easily beat out 2011 and 2012 combined. New Leaf, Mario and Luigi, Pokemon and Zelda, all on the way before the end of the year.

So yeah, I love my 3DS, I just don't think it's anywhere near my favourite console ever.

@julienpoo Man oh man do you excel at NOT trying to explain yourself clearly. While I get the gist that you sorta hate the 3DS and don't find it appealing, well maybe you'd be happier with a Vita, oh what am I saying? There is nothing but ports on the Vita, perhaps if you'd rather have a console, I suggest you get a PS3 or 360 if you want nice, full length HD games because if you can't like the awesomeness of the 3DS as a Handheld, then you'll only be happy with a console experience.
The 3DS has tons of great games, you've named a few, I would suggest Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil: Revelations, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Tales of the Abyss and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as some of the best games on the system. What's more is, is that there are tons of other eShop games you'd like too, I can't believe there is someone actually dissatisfied with the current offerings the 3DS has and it's a shame you don't want to enjoy it or acknowledge that the 3DS has a far superior library than that of the Vita or even smartphones.. It may not have HD, but it makes up with everything else, It is pretty much a 3D handheld Wii, in fact I bet it's significantly better or close to being a Wii, and in terms of handhelds, that is pretty amazing. The Vita may be a portable PS3, but it doesn't have the popularity, nor the support that the 3DS has, if you can't find any enjoyment in a gaming device like the 3DS, then there's nothing I can help you with.

It seems that your preferred genre is Racing, and it's quite true that the 3DS doesn't have too much in that department at the moment. The Vita might be better for your tastes, since it will most likely get ports of the incredible looking driving games which are hitting the next gen consoles.

As for platformers, the 3DS is a little bit more packed. In addition to the ones you have played, there is Rayman Legends, Castlevania and the upcoming Yoshi Yarn in the 2D department, and the upcoming Jett Rocket game in the 3D department.

I'd say that the best represented genres on the 3DS at the moment are Action, Adventure, RPG, Fighting and Puzzle. The handheld's almost been out for two entire years, and the games that a system will be remembered for usually come out towards the end of its lifetime. So I'd suggest to either be patient, or check the Vita since it might be a bit more suited to your tastes.

@RetroGBHippie92 "Man oh man do you excel at NOT trying to explain yourself clearly." Sorry for this... english isnt my mother's tongue, you all guessed it I think ^^'
"you sorta hate the 3DS and don't find it appealing" no not at all...I don't have hate. I tried to discuss this subject with a bit of humour. It's video games afterall. I loved it when I tried it in a shop with Super Mario 3D Land... SM3DL is kind of an exception, very few others games really impressed me. And I was hoping to see more new and diverse things coming... Animal Crossing.. yes... I know this serie since N64, i'm bit bored of it and its not my thing. Will see about the new Zelda.
Don't know, I consider Ocarina Of Time one of the best game ever, Donkey Kong one of the last best platformer... But I can't play anymore to OOT, and DK either... they could have do following instead of remake or port? I don't know OOT of time why not... it's old and got reworked a bit, DK is almost a new game o_O For someone who never played them it's a great opportunity to appreciate those games.
"if you can't find any enjoyment in a gaming device like the 3DS, then there's nothing I can help you with" It's a bit... excessive... right ^^' ?
Guess it's hard to talk about this. Depends taste, and what you played before.
@Magikarp yes this is true, I think I like arcade games, it shows yes... like racings... brainless fun, but not only, I'm quite open, but it's true puzzles and rpg never been my things. I'm not a big fan of the Vita either, cause even if the genre I like are more represented than on the 3DS they are rarely "must buy" games... and I love Nintendo franchises usually.

Im curious to see statistics btw, it would be interesting to see who we are, just to see the different profiles. Lets try ^^

I honestly have to agree. While I haven't played every remotely relevant game on the system (like the latest Kingdom Hearts, the Final Fantasy rhythm game, or any eShop game beyond Pushmo and Liberation Maiden), 3DS has had a really slow start. I mean I loved the latest Kid Icarus and people loved Resident Evil Revelation, there was still a lack of games I really needed to get, which DS had covered a year into its life. Only now is it really getting a lot of praise and is seeing a consistent stream of relevant and great games.

Personally, the 3DS is my all-time favorite system, but that probably stems from being able to play my 3rd favorite Zelda wherever I go. I can see how some can dislike it though, and I can't really see why people are getting "mad" at the OP.

3DS is backward compatible, when I say its the best ever, I'm accounting for the whole DS library + 3DS exclusive games which IMO makes the best library ever, PS2 with PS1 backward compatibility is close but that backward compatibility was known not to work 100% of the time...... DS had GBA backward compatibility but I take the current 3DS library over the whole GBA library

I'm on the side that thinks 3DS is awesome. The Backwards Compatibility is awesome, and that's even when I still have only two games. =w=

@julienpoo
Animal Crossing was GCN forward. I respect your opinion, but there's not really anything better out right now, which is what I think retrohippie was trying to get across.
I'm honestly starting to feel the lack of great games(mainly from 3rd parties) myself, but there's nothing we can do.
There's not a Tony Hawk, COD, or whatever else that was on DS.
If/when we get better versions of games that were cool on DS(basically a DS sized library), and possibly some new IPs, it should be better.
3rd party games are really the only thing lacking right now, otherwise, Nintendo is doing a good job of pushing the system.

While it's not my favorite system of all time, I am highly enjoying the 3DS.

However, it hasn't been because of the first party games, for the most part. Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Pilotwings Resort, Kid Icarus: Uprising, & Pushmo may have been fun, but honestly nothing special, IMO.

It's been the 3rd party games like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Tales of the Abyss, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy, Dead or Alive Dimensions, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Liberation Maiden, Crimson Shroud, Cave Story, VVVVVV, & Denpa Men, which have made me love it. (the only Nintendo titles I'd put in this category are Ocarina of Time 3D & Paper Mario: Sticker Star)

If at least 5 full retail games start showing up every month from companies we know, from indies, and basically anyone that can get a game on there, 3DS will be in the same awesome league as DS.
DS literally had games pouring in, so there was no way for anyone to be dissatisfied. The 3DS is WAY better than the DS system wise, but the games aren't as abundant.
We're basically at Wii scaled dev times for a handheld. That kind of funding isn't easy for a business trying to make a good game.
