i've been into gaming since Pong (gawd...i am old). we've had every ninty system except the horrible Virtual Boy and the WiiU. my kids had all the different GameBoys. understandably, i didn't game much when my kids were small as there just wasn't time, lol.

i got back into handhelds when the ds then dsi came out. i love the 3ds xl i currently have, but tbh the backwards compatability with the dsi is important in my love for it.

the 3d is fun sometimes, but it isn't the driving force that nintendo at one time thought it would be. i am at the point where there are almost too many games coming out that i want/need, lol. i didn't play DKCR for the wii, so i will get it for the 3ds. AC:NL is a biggie for me also. i really enjoyed the new iteration of Luigi's Mansion; it was fun, repetitive only the ways the original was, and well done.

so yeah: for me, at this moment, the 3ds xl is best handheld.

I'm divided here. The 3DS is definitely not the best handheld, but it's second to the Nintendo DS, the best in my opinion. As of right now, the 3DS doesn't have as diverse of a library as the DS did at this time, a problem with rising costs and development times with the "better" technology. The retail experiences feel a bit more hollow in comparison, and in some cases, such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, lack the legs that have made Mario Kart DS and Super Mario 64 DS great for years. There is no sign of any first person shooter for the 3DS on the retail side, and only Renegade Kid has been willing to bother with the genre on the eShop. This is one genre that I fell in love with on the Nintendo DS with titles like Metroid Prime Hunters, Moon, Dementium and Dementium II. Speaking of which, the 3DS hasn't had a well polished survivor horror yet either, though it has tried to. A new Custom Robo should fill that same void in terms of third person shooters, as Custom Robo Arena did for the Nintendo DS. Kid Icarus Uprising doesn't fall into my definition of a polished experience. I will say though that in terms of platformers and fighters the 3DS has been doing well, but it does need to offer more than that at high quality.

I have always tended to play my handheld consoles the most, at least since the GBA SP. Loved the DS love the 3DS more, but that may be due to the eshop improvements and more games to DL. I love Puzzle swap and Find Mii w/ my street/spotpass. I have it everyday, in fact I have it now and I'm not at home. The system really isn't really that old, but I feel there are to many good games for me to play them all. I don't want the e-shop $$'ing like I/Android games. Most of the stuff on those is garbage, and although there is shovelware on all online stores, $$ will keep some garbage off the e-shop. If this means missing a good game or to because of that, oh well. The Sega DC is still my favorite system ever, but the 3ds is coming close. As an aside I have owned consoles since day 1 launch of the NES, since my dad was a gamer then too (Atari). But hey, we all feel differently about certain stuff. Your not Pooin' on my party.

Gotta catch them... eh, nevermind.

I agree with you! You gotta be careful though, since a lot of people around here don't really grasp the concept of there being anything in between 'best ever' and 'terrible'. I really like my 3DS, but whenever I read someone saying the 3DS is their favourite console of all time, it makes me wonder what they've been playing in the past.

Couldn't have said it better myself.. I mean the 3ds is ok, but nothing really amazing. There are only a few first party and third party games that I'd consider "must haves", while the rest are just good.. It just seems to me like Nintendo hasn't been as creative with their games as they have been in the past, instead rehashing old games (Luigi's Mansion, NSMB2) or just plain bland games (Paper Mario SS, Super Mario 3d Land). Right now the only 3DS game I'm really looking forward to is Pokemon X..

We were told that the 3d ds screen could not be any bigger because we would loose the 3d effect, then the 3D XL is released. I like it and I like the 3d effect, but the screen res is not as good.

The new Donkey Kong reviews say that the game is not so good on the small screen and on some levels on the XL is only just OK.

We need a bigger screen, say 7 inches, better graphics, and a double touch screen. The new Mario and Donkey Kong just does not work.

Of course I love my system and its all I play these days. I've got so many games and no time to play them. I like all kinds of games and the 3ds has plenty on offer for all types of games. Its not my favorite yet but by years end I'm sure ir will be. I have about 23 retail games and should be up to 30 be the end of the year. Its the most games I've owned at one point for one system in a long time! I play it so much I have to charge it in the afternoon sometimes so I can play it later in the day.

As for @Peach64. I've played everything from atari 2600 to present. Owned every nintendo sysem at one point including the virtual boy and had ps1 ps2 ps3 xbox genisis dreamcast master system turbogrfx16 and who knows what else! Its like @RR529 said its the 3rd party games that have put it over the top for me. 2/3rds of my collection is 3rd party games!

I don't know what reviews you've been reading but it has an overall 83% score so far. Way more positive reviews then negitive. 83 is a very good score!

Dang it Tech...you've been consistently gaming for a while! I started on the Atari 2600 but we couldn't afford systems after that so my main gaming life has only been recent. Do you still have your old systems?

On topic...I love my 3DS to death!

The only old systems I have are mostly thanks to my wife and that's an NES and Super Nintendo. Otherwise the Wii and 3ds is it for me. My kids do have a dsi and dsixl but that's it. I'm more into the here and now more so then the past. Don't have time for the past really!

I agree, TC. There's nothing appealing on the system that hasn't been done already and can't be found elsewhere. The game variety isn't there and, from my perspective, nothing from its hardware and social stand out as impressive nor have been utilised in an innovative, beneficial way.

New Leaf might be the first game to actually give it a name. But that's just wishful thinking, unfortunately.

I swear I just read a comment about game variety not being there. Right...so anyway, I just realized how glad I am to have a 3DS after reading some comments here. So my PSVita sits near near me now. But where the heck are the games. I use my PS+ and get some free ones for sure but retail stuff I pay $$ for. Just 2. Persona 4: Golden (Lame) and Soul Sacrifice (Not to bad). In terms of variety and quantity/quality 3DS is way better. Innovation seems very subjective, because no original thought or idea has truly ever happened in probably decades. No gaming style or method of doing it will ever be truly original, unless some form of drastic gaming media presents itself (holografix, smell-o-vision, sensory feedback). What innovative things have Sony or MS done, truly different and unique. Anyway I need to get back to playing my extensive collection of 3DS games. Hmm, should I play and RPG, platformer, action, puzzle, adventure, horror or a quirky e-shop game. If only I had some variety to choose from.

Gotta catch them... eh, nevermind.

If at least 5 full retail games start showing up every month from companies we know, from indies, and basically anyone that can get a game on there, 3DS will be in the same awesome league as DS.
DS literally had games pouring in, so there was no way for anyone to be dissatisfied. The 3DS is WAY better than the DS system wise, but the games aren't as abundant.
We're basically at Wii scaled dev times for a handheld. That kind of funding isn't easy for a business trying to make a good game.

I feel like I agree with what you're saying. With all the big name releases over the past months and with more coming soon, it feels like we are on the cusp of something great. As a Nintendo enthusiast I am waiting on the sidelines with my 3DS, skeptical of the current library but very excited for the months and year(s) to come.

Dude, you're basically describing a tablet... Why and how on earth would I game on a 7 inches double-screens? And again, why are graphics so important even when the 3DS is good in terms of them? Aren't they actually playable? Stop complaining and start playing.

Have to say, I agree (I think :S).... don't get me wrong, I love my 3ds, and even recently sold my aqua launch 3ds to upgrade to a pikachu XL... but I just love my Vita more. Part of me thinks the games appeal to me more, but I'm sure that's not it, as the 3ds has some great games, and a ton more coming up. I just think, maybe after playing my vita so much, that I'm used to vita-level screen sharpness and power, which the 3ds isn't gonna have... which lowers my enjoyment of a game (not ruins, not prevents me from having fun - 'lowers'!) but not by much. Maybe the vita's games do appeal to me more? Different people prefer different things! That said, I think the 3ds is the best Nintendo handheld.

So in summary... I'm not sure I agree or disagree anymore! This was a rather pointless post actually lol

Lots of diverse opinions here. Most of them are in favour of the 3DS being the best thing ever. Well, we are on a Nintendo forum, this maybe helps, there must be a natural selection that drove us here
Again I don't really dislike my 3DS. I thought there is space between "best console ever" and "this console does her job". I didn't have a crush on many games (only SM3DL). I feel Nintendo is playing it very safe. I was curious to know if I was alone to think this way, not really trying to poop the pleasure of people enjoying it
It happens often that I look at it cause I want to play a game... and finally I don't play it cause I don't have a game that I would like to play. There a some I enjoyed... but I played them already. I wish there was a bit more. Let's accept the library of game isn't for me actually. Maybe it will change, maybe not. The price of games sure has a role to play here too. I tend to be very picky for a 45€ game.
Hard to say who's right who's wrong, since tastes are personal. Thats why I started this topic with a bit of humour. It's always interesting to discuss about it however.
Lots of people compare it to the Vita also. It's like some people like the 3DS out of spite, cause the others choices aren't better.

Best ever? No. Best handheld? Heck yeah!

Of course, it is hopefully still very early in its lifespan. It could eclipse the PS2 and SNES one day. Maybe...
