Oh, we already know that the mountain of text in 7 is what has been preventing a Western release. Square-Enix came right out and said that they're worried that DQ7 won't sell enough to justify the costs of translating and localizing its enormous script.
Cool, I hadn't seen that. Well that's surely further reason to expect we will get a release. There's almost no reason not to.
The chances of getting DQ VIII are far greater than any other of the 3DS games. VIII is essentially the dominate entry in the West with the most brand recognition and was, in fact, the first mobile port released outside Japan. All they would have to do is apply the mobile-port text to the 3DS version (which I assume is based off of the phone port anyway).
Definitely don't hold your breath, but if we're going to get a 3DS DQ it will be VIII.
Well I'm buying VII next week (thank you price drop!), I'll likely hold off on VIII until it also gets a drop. I'd been wanting to play it without all the "cor blimey" getting tossed around every 2 seconds.

Dragon Quest: Sentinels of the Starry Skies on DS was freaking amazing. Full of content and story. Why is this series not being localized anymore??!
It also did better in terms of sales than any other entry.
Only reason I can think of is stuff like Bravely Default has no content (text to translate) so it is more worthwhile for them even though it sells much less.

Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
The plot is tame, but the vingnettes in every town you go to are the highlights, IMO. It reminds me of Okami, where your job is to help everybody, and they do a damn good job of making that feel rewarding.

I think Xenoblade Chronicles X will go for a similar vibe.

I thought I'd read that DQ9 has no actual characters in it though? Aren't they all just empty avatars? That would seem to heavily restrict the storytelling. It certainly did in FF12.....ba-dum-dum....

Not really. Dragon Quest Usually has silent characters, it never stops it from having good stories. Unless you mean there are no characters anywhere ever, in which case that's a bold-faced lie. It's like with Fantasy Life, where you're the helpful quiet guy accompanied by a sassy fairy on an adventure in a world full of charm and beauty. And you bring along 3 mute clones who will do whatever you tell them to do...
I hated IX's party members. I like it better when the party is made of people with personality and backstory, with the exception of MMO characters which are actual people. But even then they have a mythos. These were just bland, boring, two-dimensional characters that were there just because.

But the characters in dragon quest IX did have a purpose, though- even if it was on the gameplay side. you could create a party full of different classes based on your personal taste. and the real storyline was shown by the characters around the world- like serena, corvus, even the ones that affected the little side stories =]
