The PS2 version blows the 3ds version away. I bet the 3ds could run on my broken down PC compared to the PS2. So far the PSP works with little slow-downs.
I need to go find my guide for this game the recipes are a pain to remember.

More than a bit, as far as I can tell. Most noteably, the draw distance is worse and the world seems more baron:
Lol ok, what comes in between "a bit" and "a lot"?
Most of it probably won't affect the game that much though. The world mostly looks more barren in that shot because he's standing on top of a hill! I'm guessing in most places in the game, you don't have such wide a view so it won't be as noticeable?
The overworld was pretty hilly, IIRC. Like, there's hardly any trees in the 3DS version, even looking at other screenshots. You were supposed to be in a fairly forested area during that part of the game. I'm really surprised they didn't make it New 3DS only considering how much they had to sacrifice. The huge overworld was kind of a big thing when it came out, tbh. Like, while it didn't have the same impact as Xenoblade, it was kind of the same effect. Really hurts the experience, IMO.
Then again, I'd rather play FES than Portable because I felt the graphical downgrade killed that game (where's the atmosphere?).
Mmmm hard to say before you play it I think. I assume all of those trees are still actually there, just cut off at a certain draw distance. So when you're in the forest, it'll still feel like a forest.
Simply having a graphical downgrade doesn't necessarily mean that much I don't think. I was really worried about the Xenoblade port. Screenshots of that look like complete turd but as soon as you're playing it, it's completely fine. Didn't feel like much was lost from the experience at all.

I can't find the right screenshot right now, but I saw an area that was supposed to be forested that was not on a hill that had maybe one tree in it, and the rest was green carpet as far as you could see...
What do people think? Bit of a downgrade from the PS2. As long as it runs well, I'm cool with it though. (if it comes out in the west)

I bet the 3DS version looks better in motion than it does in still screenshots. And... many Square Enix Playstation 2 games still look good to this day. Kingdom Hearts on Playstation 2 still looks pretty dang good.
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

It's like with Fantasy Life, where you're the helpful quiet guy accompanied by a sassy fairy on an adventure in a world full of charm and beauty. And you bring along 3 mute clones who will do whatever you tell them to do...
That doesn't sound like it'd work for a party-based RPG though. It works in Fantasy Life and Zelda and many other games because there's just 1 character! No?

What? It works in a party based RPG moreso than when you're just one guy, since then you have other characters who pick up the slack, while your character just reacts. Ever play Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Ys 6 or 7, or the early Breath of Fire games (1 or 2)? Or Chrono Cross, the first Wild Arms...this is a common thing, tbh, and yet a lot of these games still have good stories, interesting characters, and even a memorable player character (especially in Chrono Trigger).

Yeah, I agree in those cases. I was responding to you saying it has "silent parties" which I took to mean every character is silent?
Oh, I was talking specifically about Dragon Quest IX when I was talking about the "mute clones" (so we were both confused). Everyone else talks in Dragon Quest 8, they even got british actors with a variety of accents to keep it authentic.
(at least I think they were actually british, I'd need to double check)
Me too. I'm so psyched to play 8 that if it doesn't get announced for a western release this year, I'll probably just dig out my old PS2 and do it that way.
