I needa tablet that can run flash videos and games. One feature that I don't think the 3ds will ever be able to do so..

3DS all the way!

Oh okay, I see your reasoning. Because the technology for the 3DS is 'new' (which is isn't) and the iPad 2's is 'old' (again, it's not) that's enough reason to choose between two completely different devices. I see.

Ok... lemme refrase. 3DS has a 3 in it. I pad2 has a 2 in it. 3 > 2.

Please, please tell me you're kidding.

Do you have real reasons to back this up or are you just being a jerk-off? I'm guessing the latter.

Most important question is what do you want the iPad 2 for? And do you already have an iPhone 4? I don't see how it's worth it to have two iOS devices. If you're just planning to get it for games, then 3DS would probably be the better investment. If you actually have some other legitimate reasons for needing a tablet, then perhaps get the iPad.

The iPad is for a completely different purpose than the iPhone. It's like saying "why have a computer, when you've got an Android" or "Why get that big 50-inch LCD TV when you've got a radio?"

The big screen on the iPad (and it is a big screen), makes it better for writing, reading magazines and books, surfing the internet and a host of other things than the iPhone. It also makes for a very different gaming experience. While the iPhone is best for small, simple games like Angry Birds, the iPad can be used effectively for FPSers, strategy games, board games, and so on.

Don't forget, the iPad's screen is substantially bigger than a 3DS' - for some genres, that makes it the better "console"

So yeah, if you've used both an iPad and an iPhone you'd realise pretty quickly how different the two are.

Aren't portables designed to be portables not some huge screen though?

What bboy said. iPod products always re-release later on with more functions.

And Nintendo handhelds don't?
They both get revisions eventually. It just comes down to personal preference. I loved the 3D when I tried it and I'm so excited for the virtual handheld so I'll be getting a 3DS over the Ipad.

DS series did get those quick revisions but Apples thing is make a good model and 6 months later make a better model and sell it for more money. Also It has been said that no 3DS lite for a while!

And just as there won't be much point to getting a 3DS Lite, there really isn't much of a reason to get every single Iwhatever out there. I still have a 3G ITouch and I'm perfectly fine with it, and I don't see much reason to get the 4G or 5G or whatever they're on. It's all just a scam in my opinion.

If they do a 3DS lite it would be nice to make that sweet spot bigger, and for them to give it some more battery life...

The only difference i found between IPAD and IPHONE is the screen, especially when i'm playing games.

Calling people stupid just because of how they choose to spend their hard earned money ain't exactly nice you know. I don't take kindly to people who think they're better just because of how they choose to spend their money either.

Well I don't think they are "stupid" but I wouldn't use the term "smart."

iPad can do things.
3DS can do things.
they both do different things.
The question is: what do YOU want out of a portable device?
It's all opinion.
@deegan714 What do YOU want out of a portable device?
For example: @WaltzElf loves his iPad cause it is so versatile and can do many things. Alot of people feel this way.
The games are good on iPad, but sadly, because the lack of controls, it is kinda hard to get used to it if most of your gaming is done with physical controls.
3DS will have awesome games, but it will not have as much power or more of a "all around" feel.

They're two very different platforms that have distict advantages. Owning one doesn't make one silly, and owning both doesn't make one stupid. I personally plan to own an iPad because I think it would be useful in my career. I don't see how that would make me "silly".

The iPad strikes a nearly perfect balance between portablity and functionality. It's substantially lighter than a laptop, but at the same time it's big enough that you can watch a movie on it and not be straining to work out which actor is which.

For example: @WaltzElf loves his iPad cause it is so versatile and can do many things. Alot of people feel this way.

This. As I said earlier, there are some games that the iPad suits - board games, for instance, work as well with tapping and sliding as they do with regular controllers.

But, you're not going to want to play Samurai Warriors on it.

Tell me, if a device saves someone significant money, time, and energy, is it a silly device?

No. It's quite a smart device.

What you people don't seem to realise is that the iPad is not just about games. It's about productivity, and there is a good reason that businesspeople across the world are buying it - heck, students in some schools and universities are being given these things to use for work as well.

The gaming is a nice bonus. And, if you are a gamer, there is so, so, so much under the surface. I defy anyone to download Romance of the Three Kingdoms and tell me that the iPad is just Angry Birds. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is so hardcore the DS games never got an English release.

I don't understand why we're arguing. iPads and 3DS's are pretty different things. There really isn't much overlap here to base an argument on.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

MasterGraveheart

I can't play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Kid Icarus, Brain Age, Professor Layton, Advance Wars, Punch-Out, Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, or any of the other Nintendo first party legacy-driven masterpieces on the iTouch devices. While their clones range anywhere from respectable to garbage, I'll take the original real deals any day. 3DS.

Besides, I don't think of the iTouch devices as actual gaming platforms. They aren't. Their games are just diversions.

I can't play Infinity Blade, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Carcassonne, Catan, Battle for Wesnoth, Dead Space and a decent version of Sim City (Sim City Deluxe) on the DS/ 3DS.

Also, the DS/ 3DS can't act as a comic book reader, magazine reader (love reading Edge on iPad), has an inferior Web browser, can't be used for writing documents or emails, can't be used for blogging, can't be used for making music (and no, Rymtik is not as good as, say, Music Studio), can't be used for eBay, is a poor social networking experience, doesn't have a massive video shop...

Those are just the entertainment applications. Then there's the business applications... I say this with all honesty, that my iPad is on all 24/7, except when I am asleep. The 3DS is a great device, don't get me wrong, but it's only on when I have a block of time set aside for playing games.

Overall, the 3DS has a slight advantage as a pure gaming device over the iPad (and a larger advantage over the iPhone, which is a lesser gaming device than the iPad). But it is only slight and I can and have spent entire evenings playing iPad games.

The iPad has a massive advantage if you do more in life than play games. It can (and has, for me) replaced regular computing.

So when the OP asked for advice on what to spend money on, there were two options - the 3DS, which will only ever be useful for games, or the iPad, which is useful overall for work and entertainment.

I would suggest the iPad to anyone. If you already have one, and then have cash left over, then get a 3DS for that extra cream - but don't expect to get more use out of it than the iPad, because you won't.

Just my opinion, but this is based on owning both, and actually playing games on both, rather than just assuming that the iPad is an inferior gaming experience to the 3DS and only has $1 shovelware on its shop.
